Seth MacFarlane’s The Naked Gun reboot is one of the most ambitious projects of his career, bringing back the beloved comedy franchise for a new generation.

The original starred Leslie Nielsen as the hilariously deadpan Detective Frank Drebin. The Naked Gun films became cult classics thanks to outrageous sight gags, slapstick humor, and clever wordplay. Rebooting such a fan favorite was always going to be tricky. MacFarlane knew the secret was to respect the original while making it fresh for today’s audience.

He surrounded himself with a top-notch creative team behind the camera and searched for the perfect lead in front of it. Despite having a meager 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Cavill’s movie is now sitting pretty at #2 on the platform, while Cruise’s high-flying sequel slips to #3 (via Flixpatrol). Liam Neeson really went out on a limb with The Naked Gun reboot, his first (and hopefully not the last) comedy film. The actor recently revealed how much his performance was inspired by the Leslie Nielsen original.

Starring in a 90-minute comedy "was a bit of a tall order" for Liam Neeson, even though he's no stranger to the genre. Speaking to Variety, Neeson said the "comedic stuff" he dabbled in "were just TV skits" that were never more than a few minutes long. "But I did know that if push came to shove, and we did it, the script would be at least be good if [producer] Seth [MacFarlane] was involved because he's got a wicked sense of humor," he admitted. "If it's at the very least good, I shouldn't try to be funny. Just be serious. I knew there'd be lots of sight gags."

Liam Neeson had no choice but to threaten Paramount Studios during a test run for The Naked Gun. Director Akiva Schaffer revealed that during a monologue, Neeson simply turned to the camera and started cursing the executives mid-take.

It may be Superhero Summer with movies like Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps dominating the box office charts, but one of the steamy season’s most anticipated comedies, The Naked Gun, is ready to rake in millions for the genre. According to analysts, The Naked Gun is targeting a $15-$17 million debut from 3,300 locations. The amount is a decent bit of scratch for a rebooted comedy, especially as the genre struggles at the box office. As Liam Neeson points out in a recent Naked Gun PSA, comedy films don’t perform in theaters like they used to, and if we want movies like The Naked Gun not only to exist, but succeed, we need to show up to the cinema when it counts.

Early on in the new version of “The Naked Gun,” there’s a moment that gives you that old “Naked Gun” feeling. Sgt.
