Sofia Coppola Reveals Her All-Time Favorite Films
Image
Sofia Coppola has revealed some of her favorite films, and her choices show exactly where her creative style comes from.

Speaking with The Guardian a few years ago the director explained why certain movies have stayed with her through the years and how they shaped the way she approaches her own work.

She began with Rumble Fish, a 1983 drama directed by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. The movie stars Mickey Rourke as a former gang member looking to leave behind his violent past, while Matt Dillon plays his younger brother who dreams of following in his footsteps.

Though not a box office hit at the time, Rumble Fish was praised...

‘The Studio,’ ‘Severance,’ ‘Adolescence’ out front for series and directing as Emmy voting ends: ‘Hacks’ still a threat in writing
Image
The campaigns are over. The votes are in. Now we just wait.

With Emmy balloting officially closed at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Gold Derby has the first look at where the race stands in the key categories of series, directing and writing.

Based on our updated predictions, The Studio has an 84 percent chance to win Best Comedy Series. Apple TV+'s show about a fictitious movie company led by Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) received a record 23 Emmy nominations, the most ever for a first-year comedy. Last year's series winner, HBO Max's Hacks, is in the No. 2 position for a fourth season that was also Hollywood-focused, as Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) achieved...

Just Mustard Announce New Album We Were Just Here, Reveal Title Track: Stream
Image
Irish rockers Just Mustard have announced their third album, We Were Just Here, out on October 24th via Partisan. The quintet have also shared the new album’s title track.

We Were Just Here follows Just Mustard’s 2022 effort Heart Under, which featured a noisier, nervier sound from the shoegaze-adjacent group. For their new project, the band is intent to let the light in a bit more. “I was trying to write more optimistically, and feeling like a fraud sometimes,” vocalist Katie Ball said in a press release. “I was trying to put myself in places of physical joy to try and get that euphoric feeling,”

Following the prior single “Pollyanna,” the band has revealed We Were Just Here’s title track. With throttling, pulsating synths driving the track, “We Were Just Here” takes Just Mustard’s minimalist noise rock into a dreamier, goth-like arena. Ball’s gentle vocals contrast...

Psst! Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky would make Emmys history with a third writing win for ‘Hacks’
Image
Who's ready for a little Emmys history lesson?

If Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky were to win Best Comedy Writing this year they would enter the Emmy record books as the women with the most wins for writing a single narrative series. They're nominated for the penultimate episode of Hacks Season 4, titled "A Slippery Slope."

With four Emmy nominations, Aniello and Statsky have already tied Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Diane English (Murphy Brown) for the most bids for a woman in the Best Comedy Writing category. To date, Aniello, Statsky, Fey and Anne Flett-Giordano (Frasier) are the only women to prevail twice for a comedy; Fey has a third writing win under her belt for the variety program Saturday Night Live. For dramas, Robin Green (The Sopranos) holds the record for a single series for a female writer, with six noms and two wins.

Instant Emmy prediction data shows ‘The Studio’ and ‘Severance’ out to early leads, with ‘Hacks’ and ‘The Pitt’ lurking
Image
A day after the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced, Gold Derby is unveiling our first snapshot of winner predictions in the 26 categories to be presented live on CBS on Sept. 14. A caveat: This data is based on initial polling of our experts, editors, and users; expect the races to vacillate and tighten as we collect more input and get closer to the ceremony.

Comedy

For the comedy genre, The Studio is expected to win three of the seven top races: Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor (Seth Rogen), and Best Comedy Directing ("The Oner"). Apple TV+'s new show made Emmys history with 23 nominations, the most ever for a freshman outing. Rival series Hacks, which won the series race last year, is also out front in three categories: Best Comedy Actress, Best Comedy Supporting Actress, and Best Comedy Writing ("A Slippery Slope"). Finally, Shrinking is poised to get on the board...

We can't believe it's taken this long for Shrinking actor to get their first Emmy nomination
Image
The Emmys 2025 race is certainly a tight one, with so many great shows from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025 making it into the nominated categories. Of course as always, there's many snubs that we're not happy about as well. Though right now, let's focus on the positive even though we can't believe there's one Shrinking actor who just got nominated at the awards show for the very first time in his long and impressive career.

Harrison Ford who plays Dr. Paul Rhoades in the Apple TV+ series has finally earned himself his very first Emmy nomination. The 83-year-old actor is up for the chance to win Supporting Actor in a Comedy. He's up against some stiff competition, including his co-star from the series Michael Urie (Brian), Ike Barinholtz from The Studio, Colman Domingo from The Four Seasons, Jeff Hiller from Somebody, Somewhere, Ebon Moss-Bachrach from The Bear, and Bowen Yang from Saturday Night Live.

Touting 142 Emmy Noms, Casey Bloys Talks ‘Penguin’ and ‘White Lotus’ Futures, ‘Duster’ Demise, HBO Max Re-Re-Brand
Image
The Primetime Emmy nominations arms race shifted back in HBO and HBO Max’s favor on Tuesday morning, with the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned platform’s historically dominant slate commanding 142 nominations across 23 originals.

With particularly strong showings for limited series The Penguin (24), drama The White Lotus (23) and comedy Hacks (14), HBO and HBO Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys hopped on the phone to dig into some of the surprises (two nominations for the outgoing Somebody Somewhere), smaller showings (House of the Dragon) and offer up some updates on a slew of nominated originals (The Penguin, The White Lotus, The Pitt) and 2025 offerings like the new season of The Gilded Age and the upcoming The Chair Company. He also had a very humble response to the suggestion of playing himself in a future season of Apple TV+’s The Studio.

The Penguin made a remarkably strong showing in the nominations.

Video: Josh Groban Talks New Barbra Streisand Duet 'Where Do I Go From You?'
Image
In commemoration of their third duet together, Barbra Streisand has shared a video featuring Josh Groban's thoughts about working with the iconic musician on the song. Titled "Where Do I Go From You?", the new duet appears on “The Secret Of Life: Partners, Volume Two," released last month. They previously collaborated on "All I Know of Love" and "Somewhere" from West Side Story. "The song itself is full of all the things you want in a melancholy, unrequited love song," Groban notes in the video. "I think it works really well as a duet because it is essentially about the lens of somebody trying to relive all of the 'What Ifs' about a relationship, but the other voice still lingers..." Image
Jon M. Chu is bringing his Oscar pedigree to the toy racetrack.

As Barbie proved under Greta Gerwig's direction, Mattel’s iconic toys can be reimagined into both box-office hits and awards contenders. Barbie earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide. Now, Mattel is hoping to replicate that success — this time with its popular toy cars and a new film.

Cho's Wicked earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters Nov. 21. Although Chu was not nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, he did receive the honor at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the National Board of Review.

The Hot Wheels script will come from screenwriters Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, known for their work on Creed II and They Cloned Tyrone. The film will be produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Chu’s Electric Somewhere,...

Hannah Friedman Tapped To Pen ‘Yesteryear’ Novel Adaptation Starring Anne Hathaway For Amazon MGM Studios
Image
Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ feature adaptation of Yesteryear, the forthcoming novel by Caro Claire Burke, has found its writer in Emmy winner Hannah Friedman.

Anne Hathaway remains attached to star and will produce through her Somewhere Pictures banner, alongside Adam Shulman, as well as Suzan Bymel and Guymon Casady for Entertainment 360. Somewhere Pictures’ Jonathan Rice will exec produce alongside 360’s Alex Holcomb.

Entertainment 360 identified the hot novel last year through a literary scout, getting it in front of Hathaway and Shulman, with whom they teamed to take in to Amazon MGM Studios, winning a bidding war that involved three other studios. We reported exclusively on the auction last summer.

Yesteryear tells the story of Natalie, who seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful farmhouse on a working ranch, a handsome cowboy husband, six children, and eight million social media followers who adore her curated lifestyle.

Why ‘Somebody Somewhere’ deserves its first Emmy nomination before it’s too late
Image
After three critically acclaimed seasons, HBO’s dramedy Somebody Somewhere has quietly wrapped its final chapter — yet surprisingly, it has done so without a single Emmy nomination (for now). As the series concludes, now is the moment to celebrate the storytelling and performances it has delivered throughout its run.

Every season of Somebody Somewhere boasts a 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a testament to the show’s finely tuned balance of humor, heart, and honest storytelling. Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring Bridget Everett, who is also an executive producer and co-writer, the series has built a devoted following and earned accolades from critics and audiences alike. Its Peabody Award win underscores the show's meaningful exploration of identity, community, and emotional resilience.

As he seeks his inheritance in a criminal underworld ruled by the ruthless Mo (Chen), he must choose between power, his soul, and his childhood mentor-turned-rival, Sid (Dorff). Set against a backdrop of violence and shifting loyalties, Slant dives deep into the savage — and at times surreal — world of organized crime.

Mark Kandborg penned the script. Keli Price is producing for Price Productions, alongside Richard Greenhalgh and Michael Olsen, with Evan Tylor and Caterina Scrivano of IndustryWorks Studios exec producing. Udine Far East Film Festival Unveils The Full Line-up Of Its 27th Edition
Image
If Asia is a galaxy, contemporary Asia is the planet the Far East Film Festival (Feff) of Udine has observed since its first edition in 1999. Now in its 27th year, the festival remains focused on the evolving landscape of Asian cinema. This year’s lineup includes 75 titles from 11 countries: 7 world premieres, 15 international premieres, 20 European premieres, and 19 Italian premieres. The selection spans popular cinema, auteur films, and tributes to the past, offering a deep look at today’s Asia.

Graphic designer Roberto Rosolin captures this perspective in Feff’s official image, reinforcing the festival’s ever-curious gaze.

In 2024, legendary filmmaker Zhang Yimou received the Golden Mulberry for Lifetime Achievement Award at Feff. This year, the honor goes to a queen of Asian cinema: Sylvia Chang—actress, singer, director, screenwriter, producer, and radio DJ. “Icon” may be overused, but few words truly capture her impact. Lilly Hiatt ‘Forever’ Review: An Unrelentingly Focused and Electrifying Rock Album
Image
On her sixth studio album, Forever, Lilly Hiatt explores themes of isolation, self-identity, and domestic bliss. Based on that description, you might think you know what it sounds like: quiet, intimate, and replete with sparse acoustic finger-picking and tenderly sung, soul-baring lyrics. While Hiatt has always been an exceptionally vulnerable songwriter, what Forever adds to her repertoire is its unrelenting barrage of brawling guitars, punkish attitude, and hopped-up melodicism. It’s by far Hiatt’s most exhilarating album, as if filling her psyche with ringing, distorted noise was the only way she could think of to crowd out her demons.

Hiatt’s music often gets slapped with the Americana label, but she’s built an eclectic oeuvre that includes a good number of kick-ass rock songs. Forever, though, is her first full-on rock album, and it’s as bracing as a splash of cold water to the face. The sub-...

How ‘Wicked’ Adapted Its Broadway Roots so the Film Score Could Fly
Image
There’s a secret magic hidden just below the surface in the Land of Oz. No, it’s not the Grimmerie, nor even the many aspects of visual design crafted by the production team of “Wicked.” It’s the film’s score, which builds on Stephen Schwartz’s classic Broadway compositions and allows director Jon M. Chu to stretch and extend sequences so cinematic moments can really land. Composer John Powell created these musical bridges across numbers and across the Emerald City, but he got the job without having seen any version of “Wicked” before.

“I knew some of the songs, obviously,” Powell told IndieWire. “One of my first gigs in Hollywood was working on the songs of ‘The Prince of Egypt’ with Stephen [Schwartz] and Hans [Zimmer] and so I had to admit to him that I’d never seen the musical.”

But that outsider perspective was invaluable to the music team on “Wicked,...

And then there were five. The drama from a kids karate tournament couldn’t stop a pair of Cobra Kai characters from taking a well-deserved break for some, uhh, extracurricular activity. And no, we aren’t talking about Robby and Zara.

Tensions rose higher than ever in Season 6, Part 2, which led Chozen and Kim Da-Eun to get a bit physical. Only this time, it wasn’t a sparring match. (Well, it was until it wasn’t.) While out one night in Barcelona, the two senseis did come to blows, but that frustration quickly morphed into a make-out session and so much more. Let’s just...

Film Review: Small Hours of the Night (2024) by Daniel Hui
Image
One way of looking at history is to perceive it as a multitude of narratives. While the way it is sometimes taught, for example, in school, suggests it is a linear narrative based on cause and effect, a more detailed look confirms the over-simplified notion of this approach or understanding. Especially when it comes to a culture that has been dealing with oppression, persecution and in general an authoritarian regime, it is not only recommended but necessary to reject any simplified approaches. At least, this is probably what any viewer will take away from Singaporean director Daniel Hui‘s latest work “Small Hours of the Night”, which, even though it centers around two performers, weaves a complex web of stories and timelines presenting a view on his home country’s past, especially its handling of dissent and resistance.

Small Hours of the Night is screening at Doclisboa

The story, which...
