People don't make slow burn films much anymore and streaming channels know that many watchers are busy scrolling phones at the same time. This film unravels slowly (sometimes a bit slower than I am used to) but that forces the viewer to watch what is happening on screen and to engage with the plot and character story. We follow the main character through various scenes including flash scenes of previous traumas and it allows us to sit and experience his mental state as he draws, watches out the window or just hangs out. Its a film that makes you think and we need more of those than pure eye candy!
What a captivating and deliberately paced healing-of-the-soul. This story is written, directed and filmed by teenage Alec Ybarra, and I'm very impressed! I loved the subtlety of the dialogue conjunct the immense pain and internal chaos the main character is struggling to overcome. The tenderness between mother and son is a sacred relationship, and nicely executed in this film. "Charlie" is an intriguing story I would highly recommend!
Charlie is a quiet film, paced to perfection. You need to be ready for a slow-burn emotional power punch, but if you know what you're in for it's worth your time. Since seeing this film and its beautiful cinematography, I looked into filmmaker Ybarra and was so amazed by how young he is, so I checked out his earlier shorts. While they show he was clearly taking the learn-by-do approach, this proves he sure as hell has learnt (each film improves). I'm blown away by the maturity Charlie, so please give it your attention. Looking forward to see what Ybarra does next.
This movie follows Charlie and her mother Rachael who's family dynamic is clearly off. Charlie lives in isolation and the filmmakers take their time to build the perception that there is something very much wrong with him. This non-linear story then jumps to Rachael who is being interviewed by a detective after Charlie disappears. The creation of this desolate world is accompanied by a rather dramatic score and both our leads bring these characters to life.
If you are looking for a fast paced thriller, look elsewhere, however if you are looking for a proper character study about PTSD and the devastating effects it has on a family, this gem will surely not disappoint you.

This was an engaging drama which keeps the viewer in anticipation. Charlie has interesting and well thought out cinematography and contains great production value which aptly tells this coming of age story of a teen dealing with life challenges.
