Many anime fail to impress not because they did not have an interesting setting, but because they are unable to strike a balance between an intriguing premise and proper execution.

Some shows boast extremely unique ideas but usually fail to deliver engaging storytelling, or if they do, they do not plan properly and end up having the quality take a massive dive halfway through.
On the other hand, others might end up taking a basic premise and elevate it through good character development in the narrative and decent world-building.
A weird premise that shouldn’t have worked
Dandadan is an anime that definitely does not look good on paper. Dandadan reinvents the wheel by placing a budding teenage love story smack in the middle of a setting with ghosts, aliens, and humans with supernatural abilities. The idea might seem like a joke, but...

Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Related: Why Did It Take Me So Long to Watch Buddy Daddies? Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. This October, I have been overly spooked by all the anticipation for Halloween.

While My Hero Academia and Junji Ito are rarely, if ever, mentioned in the same breath, elements of both are mixed together with exquisite touch in the psychological thriller anime Talentless Nana that fans of both should check out. Looseboy and Iori Furuya's Talentless Nana centers around teenagers studying at an elite school on a secluded island. The students have been identified as "talented" or having special superhuman abilities, much like Quirks in My Hero Academia, but their lives quickly take a horror turn.
The students in Talentless Nana have been sent to the island to learn how to master their abilities to eventually help humanity fight the monsters that have infiltrated society to destroy it from within. The problem is that some people in the government have deemed the talented as the real threat to humanity and inserted a normal "untalented" agent into the student body to kill every last one of them.
