To promote the second season, a replica of the Macrodata Refinement office was constructed in a glass box at Grand Central Station, with Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, and Patricia Arquette performing their roles live.
The subtle facial distortion whenever a character transitions from outie to innie in the elevator is achieved by dollying the camera forwards while simultaneously zooming out (or vice versa). This dolly-zoom technique was pioneered by Alfred Hitchcock in the film Vertigo.
The department offices on the severed floor were deliberately designed to be excessively large, but with low ceilings and characters positioned in the center of the space to create an atmosphere of isolation and entrapment. Offices and corridors were designed to initially appear symmetrical, but subtle asymmetrical elements such as oddly protruding walls were added to create a fragmented, unsettling feel.
Filmed at the old Bell Works building in Holmdel, New Jersey. It was designed by Eero Saarinen who also designed the iconic TWA terminal at JFK. The water tower out front is shaped like a transistor.
