Disney Is Finally Making the Nicolas Cage Sequel We've Been Waiting 18 Years For
Image
Disney reportedly has plans to continue Nicolas Cage's most memorable action franchise with the first new sequel in almost 20 years. Cage has been a mainstay in the movie scene for decades, known for hits like Face/Off, Con Air, and most recently, the hit 2024 horror movie Longlegs. If a new rumor is to be believed, his most famous set of films to date is getting a new addition.

A new rumor teased that Disney officially started development on National Treasure 3. Known for kicking off with Cage's Benjamin Franklin Gates stealing the Declaration of Independence, National Treasure became a fan-favorite in 2004 before its sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, continued the story in 2007. After fans clamored for the two films to become a trilogy for years, it seems that Disney is finally answering the call.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the National Treasure threequel is on the drawing board,...

It also puts Dragon among the 300 biggest movies ever made in terms of global earnings.

Both How to Train Your Dragon and National Treasure 2 share similar storytelling and thematic elements, which include protagonists’ journeys on a quest filled with obstacles and growth as well as a focus on teamwork and friendship.

How To Train Your Dragon As National Treasure: Book of Secrets: Box Office Summary

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies Over Nicolas Cage’s $130 Million Blockbuster Sequel at Global Box Office
Image
It's always been an interesting time to be Jerry Bruckheimer, but the super-producer's recent run has been quite spectacular. A few years ago, he collaborated with star Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski on Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. More recently, he produced Kosinski's F1, starring Brad Pitt. The movie had an excellent debut last week, and has received massive acclaim from audiences. But a couple of decades ago, in the second phase of his career, Bruckheimer was working quite frequently with Nicolas Cage. Among the most successful of their collaborations is the cult hit National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was recently overtaken at the worldwide box office by How to Train Your Dragon.

Universal's live-action remake of the 2010 animated hit has generated $459 million globally so far, overtaking National Treasure 2's $457 million lifetime haul. In doing so, How to Train Your Dragon has become one...

Gerard Butler’s $454 Million Action Blockbuster Speared by ‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ at Global Box Office
Image
A day after it overtook director Ridley Scott's landmark original Gladiator film at the global box office, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has surpassed perhaps the most memorable movie that director Zack Snyder has ever made. It's certainly the film that launched his career, establishing him as a specialist in the comic book genre. Released in 2006, Snyder's 300 concluded its global box office run with nearly $455 million, a figure that The Final Reckoning has surpassed in 20 days of release.

That being said, the action epic's reported budget of $400 million puts it in a difficult spot. The Final Reckoning needs to gross at least $800 million worldwide in order to break even, seeing as it's one of the most expensive movies of all time. Costs ballooned because of the pandemic and the industry-wide strikes of 2023. Plus, star Tom Cruise is a stickler for in-camera perfection, which means that no...

‘Fountain of Youth’ Review: John Krasinski and Natalie Portman Play Squabbling Siblings on a Mission in Guy Ritchie’s Ho-Hum Apple TV+ Actioner
Image
A group of plucky adventurers risk life and limb in pursuit of the Freemason Treasure, I mean Cibola, the lost city of gold, in National Treasure, I mean National Treasure: Book of Secrets, no, dammit, I mean the Fountain of Youth in the new action-adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie premiering on Apple TV+.

As my confusion indicates, Fountain of Youth feels all too familiar in its assemblage of action set-pieces in exotic locations, accompanied by the sort of quippy banter that people fighting for their lives probably don’t actually engage in. Starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as estranged siblings reuniting to search for the mythological spring, the film is the sort of mindless, glossy entertainment tailor-made for streaming, even if its large-scale action sequences and exciting locations would look great on the big screen.

And by location, I mean locations! The story begins with an elaborately choreographed...

'On the Hunt': Action Thriller Picked up for Release Ahead of Cannes
Image
Since exploding onto screens way back in 2008, Liam Neeson’s Taken has had a lasting impact on the world of action movies. And that impact continues, with an all-new action thriller taking some cues from director Pierre Morel and writers Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen’s tale of a former CIA agent on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter. A tale that transformed Neeson into the quintessential aged action hero.

Now, the upcoming action thriller On the Hunt will put a female-led spin on proceedings, with Australian actress Nicky Whelan(The Flood) following in Bryan Mills’ footsteps as an ex-special forces operative who brings her particular set of skills out of retirement after her daughter is abducted by human traffickers. You'd think that these capable action heroes would be able to keep a better eye on their kids...

But thankfully for us, they don’t, as it allows...

‘More Chatter Than Normal’: Nicolas Cage Teases Hope For ‘National Treasure 3’
Nicolas Cage in La búsqueda (National Treasure) (2004)
Image Source: Walt Disney For years, fans of adventure cinema—and especially Nicolas Cage—have held out hope for one more chapter in the thrilling saga of National Treasure. The 2004 original and its 2007 sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, cemented their legacy in the genre, sparking a nearly two-decade-long question: would Benjamin Franklin Gates ever return for another code-cracking, globe-trotting mission? Now, a glimmer of hope pierces the wait. In a recent conversation with MovieWeb’s George Edelman while promoting his latest film, The Surfer, Cage dropped a tantalizing tease. When asked about the possibility of National Treasure 3, he offered a cryptic but hopeful reply: “Don’t know. I do know that there’s been more chatter about it than normal.” While it’s not the confirmation fans have been craving, that little bit of “chatter” is enough to set off a ripple of excitement. Could it finally be happening?...

Nicolas Cage Says There Has Been Chatter About 'National Treasure 3'
Image
Nicolas Cage fans have been teased by the actor’s possible return to one of his beloved franchises for many years now, and it seems that they may have to wait a bit longer as the actor recently shared a disappointing, if slightly optimistic, view on the chancesof National Treasure 3 ever happening.

Cage is currently starring in The Surfer, another wild and unpredictable movie that has landed a strong set of reviews for the actor. While promoting the film, Cage spoke to MovieWeb’s George Edelman, and as well as discussing his current movie, he gave a short response to the chances for fans finally getting to see Benjamin Franklin Gates heading out in search of another “national treasure” in the near future. Cage said:

“Don’t know. I do know that there’s been more chatter about it than normal.”

‘It has influenced every film about war since’: Before ‘Modern Family,’ Ty Burrell Starred in the Greatest War Movie That Turns 24 This Year
Image
Long before Ty Burrell became a household name as the lovable Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, he appeared in one of Ridley Scott’s war movies. He starred in one of the most influential war movies of the past two decades. It marked one of his earliest appearances in a movie, setting the stage for his later fame.

Based on the 1999 non-fiction bestseller, the movie tells the harrowing story of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, where U.S. military forces faced disastrous setbacks in Somalia. At this point, you might have already guessed the movie’s name. Yes, Burrell appeared in Ridley Scott’s 2001 hit, Black Hawk Down, a landmark movie that continues to redefine the war movie genre.

National Treasure 3 Is Long Overdue After Disney's Failed Streaming Plan
Image
National Treasure 3 is needed more than ever after the cancelation of National Treasure: Edge of History. The franchise's last movie was released in 2007 and set up National Treasure 3 by teasing the mysterious contents on page 47 of the United States presidents' book of secrets. Despite this setup for a direct sequel, the franchise remained dormant for the next 15 years, until a spinoff series, National Treasure: Edge of History, debuted on Disney+ in 2022.

While Edge of History did feature connections to the movies and saw some of the original cast members reprising their roles, including Justin Bartha's Riley Poole and Harvey Keitel's Agent Peter Sadusky, the series proved to not be as popular, and was canceled after one season. 17 years after National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the enticing page 47 National Treasure cliffhanger remains unaddressed, as does the opportunity to see Nicolas Cage play Benjamin Franklin Gates again. National Treasure 3s Biggest Story Challenge Is Why I Want To See The Nicolas Cage Threequel So Badly
Image
National Treasure 3 has a big story challenge that makes me want to see the third installment in the franchise even more badly. Starring Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Gates, National Treasure centers around the titular character's adventures while searching for treasure. Following the success of National Treasure: Book of Secrets in 2007, a threequel was greenlit that same year with production development beginning in 2008. However, it's been 16 years, and National Treasure 3 still hasn't happened. Given the success of the National Treasure movies, the fact that National Treasure 3 has remained in development hell for this long is surprising.

Instead of National Treasure 3, a series titled National Treasure: Edge of History which didn't star Nicolas Cage was created. Unfortunately, the show received disappointing reviews from critics and was canceled only after one season. The future of National Treasure 3 has been uncertain for years. Cage and Diane Kruger have hinted...

National Treasure 3 Will Struggle To Break The Franchise's Divisive Rotten Tomatoes Record
Image
All indications suggest that National Treasure 3 won't be able to break the franchise's divisive Rotten Tomatoes score. When the National Treasure movies were released, they were panned by critics, with both movies receiving Rotten Rt scores. Following the release and success of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, there was an expectation that there would be a third installment in the franchise shortly after. However, it's been 17 years since National Treasure 2 and National Treasure 3 still hasn't happened.

Seeing as the movies were popular with audiences, a TV show, National Treasure: Edge of History, which didn't have Nicolas Cage in the cast, was released in 2022. Unfortunately for the show's future, it didn't go over well with critics and was ultimately canceled. However, this issue it faced was not unique to the show, as the movies - in spite of their reputations with fans - suffered from the same problem.

10 Threequels Fans Deserved But Never Got
Image
Sometimes, a movie does so well that it spawns a sequel. But after that, the franchise just ends; there isn't a third installment, no matter what was promised or how badly fans want one. Sometimes fans will wait years for a threequel only to be bitterly disappointed.

There are many reasons a threequel might not go ahead. Perhaps the sequel pulled in less money than was expected or even totally bombed. Or, perhaps a threequel simply got stuck in "development hell" as the producers moved on to other things. It can be very trying for fans because it usually means the story is left unfinished.

National Treasure 3 screenwriter on the project’s status, characters, and treasure hunt

Seventeen years after we last followed historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) on an adventure, we might finally be getting a new sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure and its 2007 follow-up National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer said two years ago that there was a “really good” script in place and awaiting Cage’s approval, it must not have met his approval, because screenwriter Ted Elliott revealed to the National Treasure Hunt podcast that he has been working on the project for the last year and recently completed his first draft of the script.

During his interview on the podcast, Elliott confirmed that his script is complete and ready for revisions and teased that he has written “familiar faces” into the story beyond the returning main characters of Ben Gates, computer expert and author Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Dr. Abigail...

“A very, very good writer writing it right now”: Nicolas Cage Might Return for National Treasure 3 According to Co-Star After Disney Failed Miserably With the TV Series

Nicolas Cage deserves at least one more installment to his action adventure National Treasure franchise. However, even after 17 years of the release of the second installment, the updates on the movie franchise have been vehemently silent. While most fans want National Treasure to be a trilogy, Cage would need an addition of one more movie to complement that.

National Treasure has been quite a success, but Disney somewhat moved away from the movie series. While the studio put the Cage’s franchise into a coma, a new Dinesy show, National Treasure: Edge of History, was at work but not featuring Cage. After one season, the show was canceled. Now, fans finally have a positive update on the original franchise.

National Treasure 3: Jon Turteltaub says a sequel could “100%” happen with the original cast, but they’ll need to act fast
Image
Despite Nicolas Cage’s vehement remarks about not being game for a National Treasure 3, director Jon Turteltaub is confident the project is happening, with the original cast along for the ride. Speaking with the National Treasure Hunt podcast, Turteltaub said he’s “100%” confident the sequel could happen with the original cast intact, including Cage, but they’ll need to act fast to get it made.

“100%. … We do have to hurry because people are both getting older and less interested and lives are changing and all that. And the world changes,” Turteltaub explained to the National Treasure Hunt podcast. “Our culture is changing. A lot. Since the first movie was made. Socially, certainly politically, and definitely, our language, and different cultural changes we’ve had. And you’ve got to make sure you’re in touch with all that and moving with it, and doing things the right way. … It...

Nicolas Cage & Original Cast's National Treasure 3 Return Get Confident Response From Director
Image
Director Jon Turteltaub expresses confidence in the original cast's return for National Treasure 3. Turteltaub acknowledges the need to move quickly due to an aging cast and changing social, political, and cultural landscapes. Making National Treasure 3 is a complex process that requires staying in touch with modern society and doing things the right way, says Turteltaub.

Nicolas Cage and the original movie's cast will return for National Treasure 3, the film's director confidently declares. A surprise hit in 2003, grossing $347 million on a budget of $100 million, Jon Turteltaubs family-friendly action film starred Cage as a historian leading a quest for treasure using a map hidden on the Declaration of Independence. National Treasure: Book of Secrets followed in 2007, grossing $459 million, but another National Treasure sequel has yet to materialize (though the franchise was expanded with the Disney+ show National Treasure: Edge of History).

Recent updates have indicated that National Treasure 3 is far from dead,...

Disney Needs National Treasure 3 Far More Than Nicolas Cage Does (Which Explains The Confusing Updates)
Image
Cage says no, Disney says yes. The fate of National Treasure 3 lies in their mismatched hands. Cage's successful streak means he doesn't need the sequel, while Disney needs a hit. Will National Treasure 3 happen? Cage's approval is key, but Disney's hope remains high.

It was recently revealed by Jerry Bruckheimer that National Treasure 3 is still in development, which is strange considering that Nicolas Cage recently said the complete opposite, but these mixed signals can actually be explained by the fact that Disney likely needs a National Treasure sequel way more than Cage does. In 2004, Disney released National Treasure, a movie following Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates, a historian searching for a mysterious treasure linked to the Declaration of Independence. Three years later, the movie received a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Unfortunately, the franchise has been quiet ever since.

While audiences would be excited about National Treasure 3,...

National Treasure 3 Update From Jerry Bruckheimer Contradicts Nic Cage's Recent Comments
Image
Jerry Bruckheimer confirms National Treasure 3 is still in development, despite Nicolas Cage's doubts. Bruckheimer is hopeful for a sequel, and says they're working with a brilliant writer on the script. Once the script is written, it will go to Cage for approval, according to Bruckheimer.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirms National Treasure 3 is still in development despite Nicolas Cage's recent comments casting doubt on the sequel coming to fruition. Cage exclusively told Screen Rant that "there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don't look at Disney, okay? It's not there." The actor's candid comments come 17 years after the previous sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was released in theaters, ending with a tantalizing cliffhanger about what is on page 47 in the United States presidents' titular book.

During an interview with MovieWeb, Bruckheimer offered a more hopeful update on National Treasure 3, confirming that it is still in development.

Image
National Treasure producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered an update on the long-gestating third installment in the action-adventure franchise that is sure to delight the Disney fandom.

Speaking with MovieWeb, Bruckheimer revealed that there was still movement on National Treasure 3 despite the lack of official updates from Disney. "Well, we hope there's a National Treasure 3. We've been working on it for quite a while," he admitted. "We have a brilliant writer working on it right now, so hopefully, if we get a script in a timely fashion, we'll send it to Nic [Cage] and, if he likes it, we'll make another one. We certainly would like to."

Jerry Bruckheimer Still Wants Nicolas Cage for National Treasure 3
Image
Despite previous denials, producer Jerry Bruckheimer remains optimistic about a potential National Treasure 3, hinting at ongoing developments and stating that a "brilliant writer" is working on the script right now. The unresolved cliffhanger from National Treasure: Book of Secrets has kept fans eagerly anticipating a third installment in the franchise. Chris Bremner is still attached to finish the script for National Treasure 3, potentially bringing back the original cast for a successful sequel.

The news surrounding National Treasure 3 has been in a constant state of eb and flow since National Treasure: Book of Secrets was released way back in 2007. News of a third installment in the National Treasure franchise began to resurface in 2020. Variety reported that Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney were moving ahead with a third movie, with Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) reported to be writing the script.

News surrounding National Treasure 3 was then silent for almost two years.

“You may as well not shoot it”: Michael Keaton Would’ve Never Agreed to Knox Goes Away, Which He Calls a ‘Jenga Movie’, if it Hadn’t Met 1 Condition
Image
Michael Keaton takes on another hitman role in his new directorial venture, Knox Goes Away. Keaton played a hitman in his directorial debut, The Merry Gentleman, in 2008. The Batman actor revealed that he wouldn’t have taken on the script by Gregory Poirier if he thought the film would not hold up. For Keaton, the film was like a game of Jenga, where every piece had to work for the movie to work.

Knox Goes Away also stars Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, Suzy Nakamura, and John Hoogenakker among others. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023.

Nicolas Cage Yells at Screenrant Over National Treasure 3 Question
Image
No National Treasure 3 confirmed by Nicolas Cage - look elsewhere for treasure hunting adventures. National Treasure fans disappointed, but Cage's career resurgence shines in recent diverse roles. Cage's upcoming projects showcase his versatility and commitment to challenging, captivating performances.

Nicolas Cage, the iconic actor who first embarked on a quest to steal the Declaration of Independence in 2004's National Treasure, has recently made headlines with his blunt response regarding the possibility of a third installment in the popular franchise.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Cage was asked about the development of National Treasure 3, to which he firmly replied, "No, there is no National Treasure 3." He further advised treasure seekers to look elsewhere. Cage said:

Nicolas Cage has 3 or 4 movies left in him (and National Treasure 3 won’t be one of them)
Image
Nathan Drake and Lara Croft could be Hollywood’s go-to treasure hunters until someone else comes along because, according to Nicolas Cage, a National Treasure 3 is not happening. Cage played treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates in Disney’s 2004 action-adventure romp, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets mapping a path to theaters in 2007.

Speaking with ScreenRant, Cage said, “No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”

Cage’s verbal mousetrap is quite telling of the actor’s tolerance for how Disney conducts its business. Cage’s comment may refer to how Disney fumbled the bag with its sequel series National Treasure: Edge of History. The adventure series starring Lisette Olivera, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was canceled after one season despite having ties to the Cage-led feature films.

National Treasure 3 Gets Disappointing Update From Nicolas Cage

National Treasure 3 just received a very discouraging update from franchise star Nicolas Cage.

If you want to find treasure, don't look at Disney, okay? It's not there," said Cage, who stars as historian Ben Gates in the franchise. Cage's comments are likely to disappoint the majority of the fandom, many of whom have been waiting for National Treasure 3 since 2008 when the threequel was first announced by Disney.

Knox Goes Away starring Michael Keaton in his second directorial outing drops a new trailer
Image
You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”

Knox Goes Away revolves around a contract killer who, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so,...

Nicolas Cage Gets Candid About Lack Of National Treasure 3 Development
Image
Nicolas Cage expresses surprise and disappointment that a third National Treasure film still hasn't been made despite the success and popularity of the franchise. Cage explains that he had a lot of fun making the previous movies and believes they're classics for the whole family. National Treasure 3 has been in development for some time, but it has made little progress over the years.

Nicolas Cage is surprised that National Treasure 3 is still not moving forward. The first National Treasure film, released in 2004, remains one of Cage's most popular works. The success of the action-adventure heist movie led to a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, that was released in 2007. Fifteen years later, the franchise expanded further with the Disney+ television series National Treasure: Edge of History, although it was canceled after one season. Throughout this time, there has been discussion and speculation about whether National Treasure 3 will ever happen.

15 Sci Fi Movies With Awful Reviews That Are Actually Worth Watching
Image
The sci-fi movies on this list are not all great works of art. They're not all "secretly great," not all misunderstood masterpieces, and they're certainly not all even "good." Some are! Some are merely fun. Some are bad but instructively so, movies whose bad-ness is thought-provoking. Some are even so bad, they circle back around to being incredibly entertaining.

Is "bad-ness" a lack of competence, or one of taste? As C.S. Lewis once wrote, labeling something negatively is an easy way out. "The distinction [between highbrow and lowbrow] is certainly used to allow us the satisfaction of despising certain authors and readers without imposing on us the labour of showing that they are bad," he wrote. He was talking about books, but his point still stands.

I steadfastly believe that it's worthwhile to watch "bad" movies. I believe we can learn a lot from them about our taste, about what works and what doesn't,...

National Treasure 3: Predicting What's On Page 47
Image
National Treasure 3 development has stalled due to Disney's shifting priorities, but the potential storyline involving the mystery of Page 47 has already been set up. Page 47 could contain information about the missing 18-and-a-half minutes from the Watergate Tapes, which would be a compelling storyline for National Treasure 3. The existence of the Georgia Guidestones and the secretive Bohemian Club could provide intriguing narratives for National Treasure 3, possibly involving the President and uncovering hidden societies.

It has been heavily speculated what is on page 47 in the President's Book of Secrets in National Treasure 2, and the National Treasure Page 47 mystery could be the premise for the long-awaited National Treasure 3. 2004's National Treasure was a promising movie that had the potential to develop into a long-running, profitable franchise for Disney. The movie stars Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, Diane Kruger, and Justin Bartha. National Treasure followed protagonists Ben, Abigail, and Riley on...

Hulu New Releases: December 2023
Image
It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.

On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Later in the month,...

Michael Keaton | New directorial outing set for 2024 release
Michael Keaton
Michael Keaton’s second film as director, Knox Goes Away, is heading to cinemas in 2024. More details here.

He’s been having fun of late in front of the camera, not least his cameo in this year’s The Flash, where he reprised the role of Batman. But Michael Keaton has also taken the opportunity to return to directing.

He first scratched the itch in 2008 with The Merry Gentleman. Now though, he’s wrapped filming on his latest film as director, which goes by the name of Knox Goes Away.

Keaton takes on the role of John Knox in the film, as well as stepping behind the camera. He’s attracted a good cast too, with Al Pacino, James Marsden and Marcia Gay Harden amongst the ensemble. The script has been penned by Gregory Poirier, who previously turned his hand to the likes of National Treasure: Book Of Secrets and...
