Stars: Danielle Macdonald, Bridgett Everett, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, Cathy Moriarty | Written and Directed by Geremy Jasper
Written, directed and largely composed by Geremy Jasper, a New Jersey music video director making his first feature, Patti Cake$ is an exceptionally well made film, displaying the sort of rawness and authenticity only possible in street-level filmmaking. It’s a fresh take on some very familiar underdog story traits.
23-year-old Patricia (Danielle Macdonald), Aka Patti, lives a meagre existence of microwave meals, tinned lager and daytime TV. She lives with her mother, Barbara (Bridgett Everett) – a “friend” to many a local gentleman – and her sarcastic, chain-smoking Nana (Cathy Moriarty). Patti dreams of taking the star-studded crown from her hero, O-z (Sahr Ngaujah), and becoming “Killa P”, the sickest rapper on the East Coast. But her reality is merely sick: her family’s declining health is costing them dearly in insurance bills.

No one will forget the Best Picture award ceremony at the 2017 Academy Awards, but there’s a detail lost in the shock and recriminations: It was the moment that announced A24 as an industry gamechanger. Five years after the distributor supported unorthodox indies like Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers” and Jonathan Glazer’s “Under The Skin,” A24 saw its $1.5 million poetic drama “Moonlight” pull off a surprise best-picture win — one that led to a stunning $2.5 million box-office take in the film’s 20th week of release.
In less than five years, A24 has galvanized a young cinephile audience that seemed so elusive, some doubted its existence. A24 certainly wasn’t the first to identify this demo; predecessors such as Magnolia, RADiUS, and Oscilloscope saw the same potential, and created some of the marketing tactics that now have become playbook. However, A24 had the advantage of a business strategy, and backing,...

Let’s start with the biggest surprise of the episode: Against all odds, Stefan Salvatore and Caroline Forbes actually got married. Any number of potential disasters could have put a stop to the couple’s big day, including Katherine’s arrival (which was the whole reason the wedding was moved up in the first place). And yet, the vows were spoken, the rings were exchanged, and the couple officially became husband and wife.

I vividly remember the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, even though I was 2,000 miles away when it happened. That was the year “Beasts of the Southern Wild” premiered to the kind of rapturous response that’s usually reserved for new popes or Marvel trailers. The reviews were ecstatic, and on Twitter critics were falling over themselves to declare the movie a milestone in the history of independent cinema. I couldn’t wait to see it.
And then I did.
That’s when I decided that I had to go to Sundance for myself, that I had to vet these films first-hand. I was fascinated by the disconnect. I had big questions. Was the air in Park City as thin as they say? Why do Sundance films always seem to get over-hyped while Cannes films always seem to get under-hyped? (I’ll never forgive the shrugged response to “Certified Copy.”)

The Soft Skin (Criterion Collection) I have not yet written my review of this, but I have watched the movie, just not the features, and it is excellent. The Soft Skin is French New Wave meets Alfred Hitchcock meets the tonal darkness of David Fincher's Gone Girl. I absolutely loved it. The movie tells of a married man who embarks on an affair with a stewardess and the tension that steadily grows until the unexpectedly amazing finale. If any of that sounds good to you, this is a blind buy candidate.

More than merely a showcase of the pop superstar’s talent, Selena’s new tour is also a treat for the soul.
Twenty hours have passed since I had the pleasure of seeing Selena Gomez live at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and I’m still recovering from the experience. Not only am I still finding shiny confetti in various jacket pockets, but I’m also still reflecting on the inspiring messages Selena used to weave together her heart-pounding performances. With her Stars Dance World Tour, the 21-year-old songstress has crafted a 90-minute celebration of pop music and personal empowerment — two things we could all use a little more of in our lives.
Yes, Selena’s concert had all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a female pop star’s world tour — mind-blowing light shows, infectious sing-alongs and impressive choreography — but it was so much more than that.

The ‘Birthday’ singer added some ‘Cake’ to her routine, resulting in one of her sexiest performances yet!
She didn’t quite twerk, but Selena Gomez did offer fans a sexy little shake Aug. 14 during the opening night of her Stars Dance world tour in Vancouver. Borrowing a little ditty made famous by Rihanna, she served up “Birthday Cake” in a short leather skirt, a cut-out top and a no-nonsense pair of boots. We’ve never been happier to have tickets to this tour!
This fan-shot video of Selena’s performance is only 16 seconds long, but even a brief glimpse of the “Slow Down” singer busting out RiRi’s provocative lyrics is enough to prove she’s going in a much edgier direction with her first world tour.
Of course, this wasn’t the first shocker to come out of Selena’s just-launched tour. Emblem3 is her opening act, and earlier that day,...

Men In Black III hits theaters tomorrow, and director Barry Sonnenfeld could not be more thrilled…with how crazy successful he helped Will Smith become. “I’m so excited that I get to bring Will back to the big screen after four years of not being in the theaters,” Sonnenfeld gushed at the film’s premiere, reminiscing about the young actor he hired for the first Mib back in 1997. “In fact, we cast him from Fresh Prince. He hadn’t been in Independence Day or anything.” Joked Sonnenfeld, “I think Will Smith pretty much owes me his career.” The Hancock actor might not agree with the “entire career” part, but Smith definitely recognizes the films’ influence on his mega-stardom. “He hooked me up pretty good,” Will admitted. “This franchise is probably hands down the biggest franchaise of my career.” Laughs Smith, “I owe him a little bit.

It’s the Top Chef Texas Finale, entitled “Finale,” because it is actually, seriously the very last episode of Top Chef Season 9 – no more snowy nonsense, no more Last Chance Redemption Island Of Temptation The Benefactor All-Stars, it’s just Sarah Grueneberg and Paul Qui competing to see who is the better chef: Paul, or Paul and also Bravo made a giant mistake. Sarah kicks things off by declaring “This is the goal I’ve had this entire competition.” She is Locked In. That is also the goal of literally everyone who has ever gone on Top Chef or any competition show. No one’s ever been like, “My goal is to make some friends, cook other peoples’ food, then get eliminated in Week 3 cooking a risotto that represents Daniel Boone’s courage then release a sex tape.” Tom explains that for the final challenge, each chef will design...

They didn't have Abbott & Costello, but Wednesday's Cmt Music Awards included many guest presenters who still gave the show plenty of comic relief. Among the night's notable pairings: • Reba McEntire and Kenan Thompson. Thompson appeared first, wearing a green dress and doing his Reba impression from Saturday Night Live. Soon, Reba herself showed up, in the same outfit. "Aren't you embarrassed of yourself?" she asked. He replied: "Yeah I'm embarrassed. I'm embarrassed that someone showed up in the same dress as me." Reba: "You can't be Reba, you're too dark." Kenan: "Um, pardon?" Reba: "I'm ginger with highlights,...

When we picked our 10 Breakout Stars of 2009 we missed the boat on the child actor likely to end up as the biggest breakout star of the year: Max Records.
The 12-year-old star of the well-reviewed Where the Wild Things Are was plucked from relative obscurity by director Spike Jonze, likely in part due to Records' appearance in music videos for Cake and Death Cab for Cutie.
Before he became director of one of the year's most anticipated films, Jonze started off directing music videos for Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys, Daft Punk, and Fatboy Slim (to name a few). Kindred spirits, it would seem.

Groovy Paper
Getting my eight-year-old daughter, Olivia, to write thank you notes used to be a real chore. Then I wised up and bought her personalized cards. Proud to see her name in print, she began dashing off thank you notes like a pro, even adding little drawings as a personal touch!
Leah Remini was probably thinking the same thing when she ordered customized thank you cards for daughter, Sofia, from Groovy Paper, an online stationery boutique with a wide range of hip and fun designs. Leah chose super cute Gym-Pink thank you cards ($155 for set of 50, $215 for set of...

Graham makes rounds on 'Scrubs'
Heather Graham will add some star power to NBC's Scrubs next season. The actress has signed on for an eight-episode arc on the Touchstone TV-produced hospital comedy (HR 7/1). "Although her character will be a professionally competent shrink, her personal life will be a train wreck," Scrubs creator/executive producer Bill Lawrence promised. Graham, known for roles in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Swingers, recently completed production on the indie feature Cake, which also features Scrubs co-star Sarah Chalke.

The Vine: Graham in talks to join 'Scrubs'
Heather Graham might be scrubbing up for a TV gig. The star of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is in talks to join the cast of NBC's comedy series Scrubs next season in a regular role. Graham, who was seen in a guest shot this year on Fox's Arrested Development, would play a therapist who wreaks havoc among the other staffers on the quirky hospital comedy from Touchstone TV. If the deal comes to pass, Graham will already have at least one acquaintance on the Scrubs set -- she and Scrubs co-star Sarah Chalke are wrapping up production on the indie feature Cake.

Chalke has her indie 'Cake' and 'Alchemy,' too
Scrubs star Sarah Chalke is spending her summer hiatus from the NBC series filming two indie features. The actress will make her big-screen debut in the Nisha Ganatra-directed and Heather Graham starrer Cake, from a screenplay by Tassie Cameron. The project centers on Graham's character, a free-spirited travel writer and adventurer whose phobia of relationships is tested after she accepts an offer to take over her father's business, a conservative bridal magazine called Wedding Bells. Chalke is playing the good friend of Graham's character.
