An Enjoyable Holiday Treat

I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 400 (C H R I S T M A S ) MOVIES AND SPECIALS.

BEWARE OF BOGUS REVIEWS. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW. WHEN ITS A POSITIVE REVIEW THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE PRODUCTION. NOW I HAVE NO AGENDA! I AM HONEST! I REVIEW MOVIES & SPECIALS AS A WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN!

If you are a fan of old movies you will realize that this plot is very similar to the 1940 film "Remember the Night". That film had Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray.

In that film Lee Leander (Stanwyck) is a petty shoplifter on trial for swiping an expensive bracelet from a local jewelry store. When her trial is postponed until after New Year's, sympathetic Assistant District Attorney John Sargent (MacMurray) bails her out of jail. Together, they find themselves falling in love when he invites her to his family's home for the holidays where she discovers the warmth and love she's never had but always wanted.

In the film "Undercover Christmas" Jake Cunningham (Shawn Christian) is an uptight FBI agent assigned to protect Brandi O'Neill (Jami Gertz), a lower-class cocktail waitress who recently helped with the tax fraud investigation of her billionaire boyfriend. When Jake's wealthy parents (Tyne Daly and Winston Rekert) unexpectedly call him home for the holidays, Jake must bring Brandi with him in order to keep her safe prior to the trial. They pose as a couple in order to keep the proceedings a secret until the court date. The Cunninghams disapprove of the match but begin to accept Jake's "girlfriend" just as Jake and Brandi are truly becoming a couple. Brandi testifies against her former boyfriend. The movie ends as Brandi introduces Jake, her new love, to her mother.

Now Jami Gertz is a little out of her league here. In fact she is a little too old for the part. The reality is she is 10 year too old for the part.

On the whole the film is a predictable as a holiday fruitcake. However the film has its charms and the cast (for the most part) make this film more enjoyable then it should be.

Above typical Hallmark holiday fare

Jamie Gertz, Tyne Daley lift this into memorable status. I found a bunch of Hallmarks and picked this one for the actresses and to see, at age 67, if these commodity entertainments can work on me. Well most don't but this did. I think acting and production values are above typical also.

Wonderful movie!

I loved it, laughed, just a pleasure! I read reviews that say the plot was already in other movies, I don't care, this movie stands by itself in a big way.

Some secrets don't stay secrets.

An overworked FBI agent(Shawn Christian)needs to "hide" a key witness(Jami Gertz)in an ongoing swindle investigation. Christian ends up taking Gertz to his wealthy parents home after being told his father has suffered a heart attack. This is a ploy of his mother(Tyne Daly)in hopes of seeing her son for the holiday. Predictably the agent and the witness pretending to be an "item" do fall in love. Also in the cast are: Diana Chaplin, Winston Rekert and Cameron Bancroft. Light hearted comedy worth watching. The main reason I watched is Gertz...man, that girl is HOT!

Judging Brandi

Undercover Christmas is an easy going and unoffensive film with a romantic festive theme. Jamie Gertz plays Brandi a cocktail waitress whose wealthy boyfriend Scott is being investigated by the FBI for major tax fraud.

When Scott is arrested the FBI try to get Brandi to testify and to prevent her from being influenced by Scott they put her in protective custody and assign a FBI agent to her, Jake played by Shawn Christian.

When Jake hears that his dad had been taken ill, Jake takes Brandi home to meet her parents at Christmas and makes out that they are engaged.

It becomes clear that Jake and his father, a prominent judge do not get on. His mother (Tyne Daly) tries to keep the peace but it seems clear that his father is more interested in impressing people than actually getting on with his family. He is far from impressed once it transpires who Brandi really is but by this time both Brandi and Jake develop feelings for each other.

There is little to surprise you here in this made for television film. Tyne Daly gives the stand-out performance as the mother who wants to keep her family together, the dad is certainly obnoxious and puts the film out of kilter. He really is badly written, in real life every member of his family would had walked out on him.

One of my all time favorites!

Here we are in 2019 and Undercover Christmas is still one of my all time favorites. Yes the movie was predictable and had some similarities to "Pretty Woman" but I just loved it. I thought TD played her role superbly as the uptight kinda snobbish mom but yet quite humorous and endearing. JG has always been a favorite of mine so of course I enjoyed her in this movie. She was sassy, funny, vulnerable, flirty and fun! I also enjoyed the entire supporting cast including little Ashley. I believe the actor who played the father has since passed on:-(. The sister and her husband were fun to watch. Shawn Christian plays the male lead .... even though some think he was boring and stiff, it was exactly how his role was meant to be played .... he does warm up by the movie's end! This is an oldie but goodie.

A Christmas TV movie that doesn't deliver.

A Christmas movie that first aired on TV, FBI agent Jake Cunningham (Shawn Christian) is assigned to protect cocktail waitress Brandi O'Neill (Jami Gertz) after she turns in her billionaire boyfriend for tax fraud. Jake is called home during the Christmas season and hides Jami in his family's house, posing as a couple.

This is one of those feel-good Christmas movies, this time trying to mix in a little crime drama in it. However, it didn't work very well as I've found the story to be boring and uninteresting. I don't remember seeing anything very suspenseful or intriguing about the slow-moving plot - it's mostly about the attempted romance angle between Jake and Brandi, which I've found mildly entertaining at best.

There are plenty of meaningful, heartfelt and captivating Christmas made-for-TV movies out there. Look over this one.

Love it

I found myself truly engrossed in the story and the characters. You might consider it as a "guilty pleasure" movie but it's defin one worth watching.

A likeable piece of Christmas fluff

Although this movie strives very hard to promote peace and good will, it is spoilt by the unbelievable storyline. The cast does its best against the odds, but even the greatest optimist in the world knows that life is not really like this.

Still, it is an entertaining concept - and if you can accept first the unlikely premise and second the fact that the "happy ending" is achieved by making almost all of the characters go against type - then I recommend it just for the feelgood ending. I must admit that I only watched it because of Tyne Daly (who still has the ability to command the screen) - and have to also admit that it hooked me to the degree that I only started to question it all after it was over.

A good way to muster up the spirit of Christmas - what more can we ask?

Entertaining Movie

Undercover Christmas was a fun, entertaining movie.Although the plot was not original,it did not lessen it's quality. The humor was clever, and the dramatic parts were touching. Jami Gertz and Tyne Daly were standouts, and although Shawn Christian did not get glowing reviews by at least one critic,I liked him in the role, and enjoyed several scenes in particular between he and Jami Gertz.

Good acting, charming wee movie

A charming and surprisingly amusing bit of Christmas fluff; predictable but redeemed by good writing and superb performances by every cast member. While nothing wildly original it is a creditable effort. Tyne Daly is a standout as the majestic matriarch.

An Obscure Gem

One of the Christmas movies I like to revisit almost every year is Undercover Christmas. It's a neglected and deceptively good movie. At first glance, it's just another Lifetime or Hallmark Christmas movie, and some jaded critics have seen only that. What makes the movie enjoyable for repeat watching though, is the depth of its characters. Also Jamie Gertz, one of my favorite, underrated actresses.

Gertz' character plays a somewhat sl***y cocktail waitress trying to catch a rich asshole and ride off into the sunset in his limo, and Shawn Christian plays an uptight FBI agent trying to catch the asshole and his embezzling family of crooks. The plot is the standard, introduce Eliza Doolittle into the FBI agent's family of rich snobbish upper class denizens at Christmas time, and have her bring a human touch into the frozen family. But if plots were what mattered, no one would pay attention to Shakespeare who stole his mostly trashy plots from whatever trashcan he could find them in.

No, what really starts to set this movie apart is the scene where Gertz' character can't sleep and finds herself in the kitchen where Tyne Daly who plays Christian's mother is diligently preparing special dishes for the upcoming party she throws every year. Until now Daly's character has played the matron of local high society whose main interests seem to be keeping up appearances and yoking her reluctant, dysfunctional family together despite themselves. After offering to help and then admitting her complete lack of culinary skills, Gertz' character asks sincerely, "What does it take to become the person everybody depends on?"

After that, the characters start to reveal themselves beyond their surface stereotypes, and the movie acquires a much greater depth.

Better The Second Time

First half was good, even funny; second half not as entertaining

Brandi is a cocktail waitress whose boyfriend Scott is being investigated by the FBI for misusing money he and his family were supposed to invest for other people. Jake is one of the FBI agents. After Scott is arrested, the FBI persuades Brandi to testify, but Jake believes Brandi needs to be kept away from Scott. A family emergency leads to Scott bringing Brandi home to meet his parents at Christmas. He tells them Brandi is his girlfriend, and she is all too willing to play the role. Jake's parents wonder how these two could possibly be together. His mother does a good job of hiding her frustration. But his father, a judge, reminds his son once again what a disappointment he is. His sister Stefanie became a lawyer and continued working rather than staying home with her daughter. Jake was supposed to be a lawyer like his father. Jake's family has money, but they seem more interested in impressing people than getting along with each other. Brandi grew up with a mother who kept getting remarried, and she wasn't used to 'the good life'.

The movie started out as a comedy, but about halfway through the laughs stopped abruptly. The rest of the movie was unpleasant too much of the time, though some parts were nice. The ending was satisfying but, given all the various twists, it was hard to imagine this happening. Many different directions would have been possible. Both Brandi and Jake's family ended up learning important lessons.

I thought Tyne Daly would be the reason to watch. She was good, but Jami Gertz was the standout performer. Brandi was sarcastic most of the time and very funny when she was. She could also be sweet as she saw what life could have been like for her, even though these people didn't get along perfectly. She was great with Stefanie's daughter Ashley (Alexandra Harvey, who was pretty good as a slightly rebellious preteen).

I could have been happier, but the movie was good for a while, and the second half was not exactly a disaster.

A Warm-Hearted, Funny Holiday Romance

If you're looking for something akin to "It's a Wonderful Life", this isn't it. However, if you're in the mood for a fun, enjoyable and cute Christmas Hallmark type movie, Undercover Christmas delivers. I liked this film mainly because of the casting, but it also did a good job at portraying a cozy, festive atmosphere throughout - the one that we all crave at Christmas time.

Jamie Gertz gives a great performance as cocktail waitress Brandi O'Neil and girlfriend of Scott Shift, and Tyne Daly was perfectly chosen as Anne, the mother of "Jakey". Shawn Christian also does a great job at being the 'uptight' yet protective FBI agent Jake Cunningham, who takes his job way too seriously.

While it is predictable, it also has his own little moments that set it apart from other Christmas love stories. This was also released back in 2003, before the millions of other Christmas Hallmark movies were made with the same type of plot. Undercover Christmas is a little bit different though, and it holds its own with the cast, the storyline, and the message it sends.

It's a good reminder to stop being so judgmental towards others during the time of year where we should be grateful and kind to one another. Gertz and Christian have great chemistry in the film, adding to its overall charm, which helps make the movie work so well.

I personally love this movie, and finally found it on Prime after years of watching it on YouTube from a user who uploaded the movie in really poor quality. I hadn't seen it this crystal clear since its release, because the movie itself is not available for purchase as far as I know, and they stopped airing this on channels like Lifetime. I try to watch this movie, and "Sundays at Tiffany's" every year as my 2 Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas go-to movies during the holidays. They aren't going to be award-winning, but they manage to put the warm and fuzzies where it belongs, and that's what matters.

If you're looking for something to lighten the mood, get yourself in the Christmas spirit, or take a look at some eye-candy (both Gertz and Christian are beautiful IMO), then give this one a try. It just might make the top of your holiday movie list every year as well.
