First Years

After weeks of hype, this show from the Peacock network proved to be nothing, if not underwhelming. The plot is predictable, the dialog puerile, and the characters stereotypical. The worst part is, the show strives to be meaningful and poignant, when it is truly about five superficial and narcissistic generation-Xers attempting to survive in the big bad world. Been there, done that. I myself am classified as a "Young Adult," to whom this show is being marketed, but "First Years" simply doesn't hold any appeal to me. It just doesn't measure up to the other NBC dramas, during which commercial spots have been superfluous over the past few weeks. I would choose West Wing, both Law and Order and SVU, Ed, or ER any day. But who knows? Maybe the writers and producers will get their acts together, although I doubt they will do so in time to save the show.

This show had me at the first episode. I have changed my Monday night viewing. The show is a drama but not a Melrose Place type. It is witty and fun to watch. I especially like Warren (Mackenzie Astin)he is my favorite character. All the characters blend in well with each other. I really want to see this show become a hit.

I saw the first minutes of the NBC show "First Years" on 3/19/MMI and I was like finally the peacock station has a drama that works. In fact this is only the second new drama that I have seen that I actually like on the network. If you haven't noticed there have been changes at NBC. Mainly an alliance through their NBC Studios branch that produces DAG/The Fighting Fitzgeralds/Three Sisters/Will and Grace and now the new show I like "First Years" One of the girls is talking about "panties" ok now we know that the person who wrote the episode is a girl so she is trying to show us from a female point of view. First Years is about the people my age a little older working in the law firm but finally this is a show made for the YA group[Young Adults] Watching this show was like talking about how good it is because it drifts like the WB Network's hot handed Felicity. If you don't like First Years it would tell me you don't appreciate tv that is better and more interesting. If NBC works with this show it will be around for at least 7 years. You heard me it is that good. You even felt the characters were talking about "underwear" but maybe they were in diapers and kept it out of the public's vision. But this show will tell it like it is. If something is lame it will explain why things are the way they are. I loved this show so much I'm renewing it for more episodes it is that good. I hope you like it. Hopefully it stays and not the lower quality of Dateline we all know that needs to walk the plank.

This just doesn't compare to the original, the British "This Life" series. This version just comes across as too flashy and a little immature, they've injected a bit too much "Ally McBeal" into it for my liking. Of course it may improve but at this stage I'd only watch it if there's nothing else.

The basic concept of the show was about life in and around a legal firm, filled with quirky, young and good-looking lawyers, handling tricky and difficult cases by day and living together in a classic San Francisco house by night.

Perhaps it should have been called "Second Generation," since three of the leads of this ensemble are children of established Hollywood actors: Samantha Mathis, Mackenzie Astin and, as far as the show's PR, the biggest name: Sydney Tamiia Poitier.

However, someone at NBC decided to run the program on Monday nights at 9pm - Opposite Fox's "Ally McBeal," which was an established and Emmy-winning show of the same type.

It never had a chance.
