The whole series was regarded as being thoroughly disorganized. Several writers were involved but there was a clash over writing styles and Hancock's character was compromised as a result.
Following its first transmission, the series wasn't repeated and did not appear on any physical format for many decades. It was once considered lost (or simply withheld from distribution by his family, particularly his agent brother Roger Hancock), but film copies were rediscovered by the family in his archive. The complete series was finally released - limitedly - on DVD by Kaleidoscope in August 2022, and rebroadcast by Rewind TV the following year.
The series was widely regarded as a disaster by the critics, and viewers switched off by the million. The bad reception to the series likely put people off from going to see The Punch and Judy Man (1963) in cinemas later that year.
