Bob Gale is primarily known as the co-writer of the "Back to the Future" movies, which isn't a bad legacy to have given that they are some of the best sci-fi films of all time. He also helped write "Used Cars," the cult '80s comedy that sees Kurt Russell playing a cunning car salesman in Arizona. In 2002, however, Gale re-teamed with Russell when he stepped behind the camera to direct "Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road," an underrated gem that was a total box office flop upon release but is currently waiting to be rediscovered on Amazon Prime Video.

Independent film veteran Ira Deutchman has received the first annual Spotlight Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the distribution and exhibition of independent films. The award was created by advertising company Spotlight Cinema Networks in partnership with the Art House Convergence.

Deutchman has been distributing, marketing and making independent films for more than 40 years, working on some of the most successful and acclaimed indie titles of our time. He received the award Tuesday night at a dinner following Art House Convergence’s annual conference.

“Ira Deutchman is a legendary figure in the world of independent film distribution, marketing and production,” Spotlight Cinema Networks chief executive officer Jerry Rakfeldt said in a statement. “His creativity, passion and business acumen have helped shape, nurture and expand the independent film industry.”

There are few movies that exist which earn the people involved a “lifetime pass” for the rest of their careers, but I consider Back to the Future one of them. Those of you who have seen the movie just nodded your head in agreement; those of you who haven’t seen it aren’t reading this because you don’t exist. Much of the reason Back to the Future is so beloved is due to the script co-written by Bob Gale. If you pay attention to the other film writers and the people in the Twitterverse, people gush about how perfect the screenplay is from a storytelling standpoint and considering my statement at the beginning of this article, I’m definitely on their side.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (Scea) today announced the addition of a variety of entertainment offerings from Lucasfilm Ltd., Cinetic FilmBuff, ContentFilm International, Image Entertainment, Inc., Mpi Media Group and New Video to the PlayStation Network video delivery service. The content, which will be made available on November 2, 2009 for purchase or rent, further enhances the video delivery service's already robust library of downloadable entertainment content, including new and favorite movies, television shows, sports, anime, original entertainment, and more.

The new content partners will provide a broad range of video entertainment, including Lucasfilm Ltd.'s Star Wars: The Clone Wars; seasons 1 and 2 of the popular TNT series Leverage (Cinetic FilmBuff); Image Entertainment, Inc. feature films such as Powder Blue and Management; the horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from Mpi Media Group; Hurlyburly and Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road from ContentFilm International; and the online miniseries Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog from New Video.
