Mark Snow, the acclaimed television composer best known for helming the popular theme song to the 1990s sci-fi hit The X-Files, died on Friday, a representative confirmed to Rolling Stone. According to Variety, he spent his last moments in his Connecticut home. He was 78.

Snow, born Martin Fulterman on Aug. 26, 1946, has earned 15 Emmy nominations for his various TV soundscapes. Six of those nominations came from his X-Files work, where he scored over 200 episodes of the series. In 2022, Rolling Stone named Snow’s X-Files theme one of the 100 Greatest TV Theme Songs of All Time.

Veteran TV composer Mark Snow, widely celebrated for his work on the theme for The X-Files, has passed away. He was 78 years old.

Per Variety, Snow died on Friday at his home in Connecticut. No additional details about the circumstances of his passing were divulged. His passing was further confirmed by fellow composer Sean Callery (24), a close friend of Snow's for over three decades.

"His limitless talent and boundless creativity was matched only by the generosity he bestowed upon other composers who sought his guidance," said Callery, who saw Snow as a mentor. "He would give the most inspiring and intelligent feedback when listening to the work of other young artists (myself included). After Cicely Tyson’s performance in the two-part CBS drama “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” earned her a spot in the very first Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress SAG Award lineup, it took 26 years for another Black woman to be recognized by the organization for an actual miniseries. The subset started by Tyson in 1995 now includes five actresses, with the latest entrant being “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” cast member Niecy Nash-Betts. If she takes this year’s prize, Nash-Betts will be the fifth Black woman to ever prevail in this category and the first to be honored for a multi-part limited program.

Besides Tyson and Nash-Betts, the remaining three Black actresses who have been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for their work on miniseries are Michaela Coel, Kerry Washington, and Cynthia Erivo. Hollywood is still grieving the death of Cicely Tyson, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96. The groundbreaking actress took home her fair share of awards over the years, including an Honorary Oscar in 2018 and three Emmys for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All.” However, the younger generation may best recognize her for playing Ophelia Harkness on “How to get Away with Murder,” the mother of Annalise Keating (Viola Davis).

Tyson, whose acting career spanned more than six decades, broke ground as a Black actress who resolved only to portray strong, positive and realistic images of Black women on screen.
