Three black men are seen crossing railroad tracks in Atlanta. All three of these men are descendants of the real person (Will Coleman) that the "Hoke" character was based upon.

So convinced was she that she would lose out, Jessica Tandy had a $100 bet with her agent that she wouldn't win the Oscar for Best Actress. When she paid up on Oscar night, she told him that it was the best bet she had ever lost.

Jessica Tandy won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Daisy Werthan. At age 81, she is the oldest winner of a Best Actress Oscar. She was the oldest winner for a competitive Oscar until 2012 when Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners (Principiantes) (2010) at age 82. He is still the oldest acting winner and nominee (having been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Todo el dinero del mundo (2017) at age 88). He was later usurped by James Ivory who won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me by Your Name (2017) at age 89.

Alfred Uhry based the story of Daisy and Hoke on his own grandmother Lena G. Fox (August 5 1877 - Feb 22, 1973) and her chauffeur Will Coleman (dates unknown). She lived to the age of 96.

Hans Zimmer's score was done completely with synthesizers, all of which he played. No orchestra was used.
