Podtalk: Horror Maven Stephanie Sack Scoops Italian ‘Giallo Gelato’
Image
Chicago – It’s “Giallo Gelato” time at the Logan Theatre in Chicago, with four exquisite films of that Italian genre, curated by horror maven Stephanie Sack. Click Giallo Gelato for tickets/details.

“Giallo” is Italian for the world yellow, which references the pulp fiction style of this particular genre of films … in the paperback days, pulp fiction had yellow colors … and the four films being screened in this special presentation are “Autopsy” by Armando Crispino (7/18), “Deep Red” by Dario Argento (7/19), “Strip Nude for Your Killer” by Andrea Bianchi (7/20) and “Footprints on the Moon” by Luigi Bazzoni (7/21). Specialized cocktails and (naturally) scoops of gelato will be available throughout the weekend.

'Thrilling': Quentin Tarantino Recommends This 50-Year-Old Italian Murder Mystery (& You Should Watch It)
Image
Quentin Tarantino is not only one of the most distinctive directors in modern cinema; he is also one of cinema's foremost fans. His own films pay homage to his heroes, and movie lovers have learned to heed his recommendations. One of his favorites has just turned 50: Dario Argento's Deep Red, a horror classic whose combination of Hitchcockian sophistication and slasher film savagery would never be outdone — not even by Argento himself.

Seeing Deep Red was a formative experience for the teenage Tarantino, who was clearly inspired by Dario Argento's artful approach to the oft-reviled horror genre. Difficult to describe and impossible to forget, Deep Red is still mandatory viewing for film fans, and its 50th anniversary is the perfect time to get acquainted with this incomparable masterpiece.

All-Time Great Dark Fairy Tale Horror 'Suspiria' Is Streaming on Plex
Image
If one were to describe Suspiria, the phrase "a nightmare etched in a stained-glass window" would be appropriate. Dario Argento's 1977 film exists in a class almost entirely on its own. The director, who, up until that particular point in his career, had almost exclusively done crime thrillers such as The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red and also had a brief foray into black comedy with The Five Days in Milan, entered the realm of supernatural horror. Co-written by Daria Nicolodi and featuring a soundtrack from long-time collaborators Goblin, Suspiria weaves a spell over its audience and takes them on a journey of kaleidoscopic imagery behind the walls of an enigmatic location.

At its core, Suspiria is a fairy tale, with Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) assuming the mantle of Snow White and embarking on a treacherous path with forces beyond her control wreaking havoc all around her.

This Upcoming Stranger Things Replacement Is a TV Remake of 1 of the Creepiest Movies of the 1980s
Image
Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is known for ultraviolent, hyper-stylized spectacles that are among the greatest genre films ever made. His most excitingly bizarre effort is easily 1985's Phenomena, starring Jennifer Connelly as a schoolgirl with a secret straight out of a Stephen King story. The legendary Italian production company Titanus has just announced their intention to turn the story into a TV series — which, if done well, could be very exciting for fans of Stranger Things and Yellowjackets.

In Phenomena, a savage serial killer stalks the students of a Swiss boarding school, and teen outcast Jennifer Connelly has one major line of defense: her psychic connection to insects. Her power helps her close in on the murderer and navigate the perils of private school, all in the course of a feature film — but a series-length expansion of this unique story could be the perfect replacement for Stranger Things after its 2025 finale.

Steven Soderbergh unveils annual watchlist; which movies and shows did he catch in 2024?
Image
Last Updated on January 6, 2025

For movie and TV fans. The conclusion of the calendar year means scouring through a lot of best-of lists. But for those who truly want something to sink their teeth into, we go to Steven Soderbergh. But Soderbergh doesn’t bother telling us his favorite movies of the year; instead, he tells us everything he watched in those 365 days, from movies to individual episodes. So what did Steven Soderbergh sit down for in 2024?

Steven Soderbergh shared his annual Seen, Read list over the weekend, showing that he kicked off 2024 with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation on January 4th (he read a book on the 2nd), along with a few episodes of Showtime’s The Curse. On his birthday, January 14th, Soderbergh treated himself to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

And just like his own filmography, the man jumped around genres quite a bit, hitting Hitchcock’s Notorious,...

9 More Scary Christmas Movies to Watch After ‘Nosferatu’
Image
While it might not seem very Christmas-y, Robert Eggers’ horror remake “Nosferatu” does partly take place at Christmas, which is a very unhappy holiday for all involved. And since the movie opened on Dec. 25, you can also spend your own Christmas break watching it.

Naturally, horror and holidays go together like, well… The Grinch and the town of Whoville. Here’s a few of the better genre offerings with maximum — and frightfully merry — mayhem.

Plus, there’s no end of killer Santa movies, including “Violent Night” with David Harbour and one where a robotic Santa run amok, if those are more to your liking. But for now, check out our list, below:

Bob Clark’s still-shocking slasher takes place at a sorority house over the holidays where a creepy guy keeps calling… before he begins killing. Olivia Hussey, Karen Allen...

A Toy Story Character Was Inspired By A Creepy Twilight Zone Episode
Image
In Josh Cooley's "Toy Story 4," Woody (Tom Hanks) falls out of his family's Rv on a road trip, and falls in with a group of lost toys. As audiences know from the previous "Toy Story" movies, toys are only happy when children play with them, and lost toys have found a way to travel throughout a neighborhood's multiple public parks, burying themselves in sandboxes right when certain preschools break for the day. Lost toys live in a strange state of chaotic bliss.

Toys that don't get played with, meanwhile, become bitter and evil. This was true of the old prospector Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer) in 1999's "Toy Story 2," and it's certainly true of Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) in "Toy Story 4." Gabby is a decades-old talking doll that has wound up in a small-town antique store. No one will buy Gabby, however, because her inner voice box broke many years ago.

10 Mystery Movies From The 1970s That Are Still Surprising
Image
Although many older mystery movies lose their edge over the years, there are still some classics from the 1970s which can shock modern audiences. More so than most other genres, mystery movies are constantly seeking new innovations and quirks, or else they risk becoming stale and predictable. This means that certain mystery movies have a disappointingly short shelf life. Some old classics prove that this isn't always the case.

The 1970s produced a few outstanding mystery movies which have aged beautifully. Many of these movies adapted the works of revered crime authors like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler. Whether they were period pieces or set in the 1970s, the best of these movies found ways to revitalize old ideas so that they could shock their audiences. There were also some truly original mystery movies which charted a path forward for the entire genre, like Chinatown and Deep Red.

For Once, Cops Take Center Stage in This Grisly Exploitation Movie
Image
Giallo is a genre dominated mainly by two names in the modern mind, those being Mario Bava and Dario Argento. But the advent of the Italian horror sub-genre caused a renaissance of blood-soaked mysteries to erupt in the 1970s, and one such lesser known film is Massimo Dallamanos 1974 offering What Have They Done to Your Daughters? While this mouthful of a movie is not as ubiquitous as the likes of Deep Red or Blood and Black Lace, it is unique in that it combines the familiar elements of Giallo with the gritty realism of a police procedural. The result of this genre marriage is a realistic, disturbing, and exciting horror film that offers a fascinating retake on the genres usual tropes.

The Puppet from Dario Argento’s ‘Deep Red’ Has Been Turned into a Vinyl Collectible!
Image
The most memorable moments from Dario Argento movies usually involve brutal slayings, but then there’s also the creepy mechanical doll from his 1975 movie Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso), which we recently named one of the 10 Most Unsettling Doll Moments in Horror.

Julieann Stipidis wrote in that article, “Sure, you could argue that there is little logical rhyme or reason for Dario Argento’s choice to include creepy prop dolls in several of his kill scenes in his 1975 giallo masterpiece Deep Red, but they really do add something special.”

All these years later, the doll from Deep Red has finally been turned into a collectible you can invite into your own home! Variety has announced this afternoon that Mutant and Unbox Industries will be releasing the prop replica, an officially licensed soft vinyl toy.

The outlet details, “Crafted with screen-quality detail, this toy perfectly recreates the menacing essence of the...

“Tales From the Void” Creator Francesco Loschiavo Talks Giallo Inspired Episode “Starlight” [Interview]
Image
This past Sunday night brought two new episodes from Screambox’s Original Series “Tales From the Void,” an anthology series that adapts six tales of terror from the extremely popular r/NoSleep by series creator Francesco Loschiavo.

Director Maritte Lee Go’s “Carry“ and Loschiavo’s “Starlight” unleash more r/NoSleep-inspired nightmares, now streaming on Screambox. The episodes will also be available to buy or rent via electronic sell-through platforms beginning on Tuesday.

“Starlight“ marks the second of three episodes helmed by the series creator, but expect a vastly different flavor of horror this week. Loschiavo’s latest episode continues the series’ moral conundrums while venturing into bloodier Giallo territory.

“Starlight” turns r/NoSleep tale “The Million Dollar Question“ by Joao Andre Narigueta Ribeiro into a Giallo episode. Loschiavo says of his latest episode, “I started reading r/No Sleep probably back in 2012 or 2013, a little bit after it was...

Sunflower Bean Got Their Hands Dirty (Literally) to Make Their Raw New EP

One evening back in May, Sunflower Bean found themselves in the woods of upstate New York, caked in 200 pounds of clay. They were shooting Shake, a short film to accompany their EP of the same name, and their goal was to look as muddy as possible — a direct reference to Nine Inch Nails’ iconic Woodstock 1994 performance.

In the backyard of their Airbnb, the rock trio stood on a piece of tarp, performing the title track while routinely being hosed down to make them appear authentically muddy. “You have the idea...

It can be hard to tell sometimes what is a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. You look at the credentials on a particular film without looking at the title and surely it has to be a mega popular hit. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. That is a sure fire way for a movie to end up on this show and that’s why today you will learn why Trauma is...

Leone Film Group Celebrates 35 Years With a Big Boost in International Pic Production
Image
Italy’s Leone Film Group is taking the legacy of its founder, spaghetti Western master Sergio Leone, to the next level.

As the Rome-based company run by the maestro’s children, Raffaella and Andrea, celebrates its 35th anniversary, it continues to consolidate its standing as the preeminent supplier of U.S. indie product to Italy. The Leone’s film and TV production side has been recently growing with a robust slate of high-end content for the international market.

Having become the top distribution partner in Italy for U.S. indies such as Lionsgate, STX Entertainment, Voltage and Black Bear, the Leone Film Group is now focused on what Raffaella Leone calls the “more difficult task” of “laying the groundwork for our production side in the international arena.”

The group’s Lotus Production label, which is now run directly by Raffaella, has a slew of projects in various stages, with new films by James Gray,...

‘Strange Darling’ Review: Jt Mollner’s Deconstructed Date Night Will Make You Love the Movies Again
Image
A single line — paraphrased by countless pornos but said verbatim at a key turn in “Strange Darling” — unlocks the heart of Jt Mollner’s razor-sharp psychosexual thriller.

“I’ve never put it There before,” says someone in a scene that shouldn’t be described.

This horror movie is the best kept secret to come out of Fantastic Fest 2023. Until now, almost everything the public has heard about this magnificent slasher deconstruction was an intentional and ingenious misdirect. From its opaque title to its overly slick poster, this blood-soaked Trojan horse is rarely what you would expect. That’s true even and especially when it’s riffing on iconic tropes.

An excruciating chase film, a terrifying puzzle-box whodunit, and a testament to romanticizing even the darkest cinema in glowing 35mm, “Strange Darling” is an outright triumph. That much you can know now, although the following review treads very carefully to avoid spoilers.

The '80s produced some of horror's most scary villains, with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees taking on the mantle of '70s horror icons like Halloween's Michael Myers.

The '80s was a great time for slashers but also sci-fi horrors and psychological movies like The Shining. The expansion of the genre was great as new viewers were invited to experience a range of new horror movies. It's because of this that the '80s is fondly remembered as a stand-out decade for horror as new generations of genre fans explore the movies that defined the '80s.

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Maxxxine Review: Mia Goth is a F*cking Star
Image
Ti West's pulpy 1980s sequel Maxxxine lets Mia Goth be a fucking star. The third film in West’s X trilogy is a sinful sendup to Regan-era Satanic Panic protests against Hollywood, aligning Maxine Minx’s Tinsletown escapades with the Night Stalker’s crime spree. Influences from Italian giallos to Jack Shoulder’s Los Angeles setups create an A+ aesthetic, the same as VHS-era “Video Nasties” paranoia, but adversely, certain themes are never fully incorporated. Maxxxine strikes its poses, cracks some skulls, and gets unexpectedly goofy, yet its pastiche sometimes feels skin-deep. West tries to have it all between Maxine’s crescendo, knife-to-throat depravity, and filmmaking commentaries, only to undersell competing features due to overstuffed ambitions.

The year is 1985. Women are being slaughtered in Los Angeles by a serial killer at large, and Maxine Minx couldn’t care less. She’s focused on one goal: graduate from adult pictures to Hollywood stardom.

‘Dario Argento Panico’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Featuring: Dario Argento, Marisa Casale, Fiore Argento, Cristina Marsillach, Michele Soavi, Lamberto Bava, Luigi Cozzi, Asia Argento | Written by Simone Scafidi, Giada Mazzoleni, Davide Pulici | Directed by Simone Scafidi

Dario Argento Panico takes its title from an old interview where he said he didn’t want to create a sense of fear in viewers, he wanted to go beyond it and leave them in a state of panic. Its form is also taken from its subject’s past, following him as he isolates himself in a hotel to finish his latest script, something he frequently did early in his career.

I’m not sure that you really can isolate yourself with a film crew looking over your shoulder, but director Simone Scafidi uses this to frame his questions for the interview portions of the film. We actually only see about three seconds of him writing, and are never told what script he’s finishing,...

‘Dario Argento Panico’ Review: Shudder Doc Paints an Essential Portrait of Italian Horror Auteur
Image
No one envies the biographer to a truly great writer. But in “Dario Argento Panico,” director Simone Scafidi takes on a task even more daunting — profiling one of the best filmmakers to ever live in his own medium.

The two artists, forever bonded by an appreciation for the 83-year-old Italian’s otherworldly filmography, take turns illuminating the mystery behind giallo masterworks like “Deep Red” and “Suspiria” (1977) in Shudder’s essential and ethereal portrait. Astounding archival footage and insightful new interviews pay taut homage to Argento’s exacting style and near-impenetrable public persona, allowing the still-working cinematic legend to vivisect his life and legacy as others do the same. The result is an accessible yet effervescent retrospective on the auteur who has become synonymous with chiaroscuro nightmares: a tightly constructed character study that will initiate unfamiliar viewers with a thorough and thought-provoking primer, while simultaneously giving lifelong fans a better understanding...

Image
In the realm of Giallo films, Dario Argento is a celebrated figure. He’s one of the most influential directors of the Italian film industry, but his films have enchanted audiences worldwide and made a lot of cinephiles fall in love with the Italian Giallo films, such as Suspiria (1977), Deep Red (1975), Inferno (1980), and many more. Directed by Simone Scafidi, the Shudder documentary Dario Argento: Panico sheds light on this legendary filmmaker’s life and his extraordinary filmmaking style. Some of those closest to him like his sister, daughter, and ex-wife, as well as some globally acclaimed directors who had always looked up to his work, appeared in this film to share how Dario became an inspiration for the next generation.

Dario Argento Panico Review
Image
Plot: An in-depth look at famed Italian Horror director Dario Argento’s life and film career.

Review: There are few filmmakers that can be considered all-time greats, yet Dario Argento is most definitely one of them. From the films he’s made to the filmmakers he’s inspired, it’s evident that the world of horror would be very different without his presence. And Dario Argento Panico does a great job of proving why. A beautifully shot and all-encompassing retrospective provides a unique look at the auteur filmmaker. So if you’ve never experienced his work before then buckle up: you’re in for a ride.

While I was obviously familiar with the works of Argento, I wasn’t aware of his life. So I was consistently blown away by some of the revelations here. Dario having no prior experience before getting behind the camera for the first time is flabbergasting.

Dario Argento: Panico: A Loving Portrait of a Flawed Horror Master
Image
Four years after tackling the life of Italian horror maestro in Fulci for Fake, writer-director Simone Scafidi returns to the technicolor world of Italian giallo filmmakers with a retrospective look at arguably the greatest of them all: Dario Argento. Dario Argento: Panico gives genre fans an extensive, if not somewhat shallow, portrait of the master filmmaker from his early career as a film critic and screenwriter to his decades-long success as genre royalty.

The film begins with Argento on his way to a hotel — a mainstay of his screenwriting process — where he sets out to write his newest screenplay. The car ride to the hotel is playfully tense as Scafidi intercuts similar moments from Argento’s films accompanied by an anxiety-inducing score, ultimately showing the ominous German dance school from Suspiria before revealing Argento’s temporary abode. Calm and serene, the beautiful wellness retreat nestled in the lush Roman countryside...

Dario Argento in Drácula 3D (2012)
“There’s someone in the house … absolutely trying to kill me, ya’know?”

The Christmas season is upon us! The warm glow of twinkling lights fills the air. Green pine trees decorate our living rooms and every solid surface seems to be decked out with ribbons and garland of deepest crimson. What better time to celebrate Dario Argento’s 1975 holiday giallo film Deep Red. Musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) is on his way home when he witnesses a brutal murder in the window of a neighboring apartment. To keep from becoming the next victim, he and quirky reporter Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi) must team up to solve not only the crime, but the mystery of the missing painting. This rocky partnership will lead them to a deep red lecture hall, a steamy bathroom, and an abandoned house in the canary islands all to track down a mysterious – and musical – killer.

Frankenstein de Mary Shelley (1994)
‘Black Christmas’ – Revisit the Original Holiday Classic on Screambox Right Now!
Frankenstein de Mary Shelley (1994)
Christmas is coming and we’re painting the snow red on Screambox.

There are an absurd amount of presents under our tree, including the “Frankenstein”-inspired Santastein, the nasty Secret Santa hailing from the director of Jason Goes to Hell, and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

But we also have our fair share of holiday classics, including Rare Exports, Christmas Evil, Day of the Beast, Deep Red, and even Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.

However, the star at the top of the tree is Bob Clark‘s slasher masterpiece Black Christmas, which is now streaming on Screambox courtesy of Shout! Factory.

In Black Christmas…

“The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sigma prepare for the festive season, a stranger begins to stalk the house. A series of obscene phone calls start to plague the sorority...

7 Holiday Slashers to Paint the Snow Red [12 Days of Creepmas]
Image
It’s all about the color red for the 7th day of Creepmas; blood red, to be precise. Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas continues the holiday horror revelry, this time with holiday slashers that aim to paint the snow red with arterial spray and carnage. These holiday slashers demonstrate that there’s more to the realm of holiday slashers than killer Santas with a variety of Yuletide killers, from lonely security guards to mutated murderous snowmen. Save for one feel-good slasher to kick things off, today’s Creepmas offerings mainly capture the grimmer side of the holidays.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 7 holiday set slashers to paint the snow blood red.

Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

This Classic Giallo Is the Perfect Christmas Horror Watch
Image
It's unlikely you'll hear the term "Christmas giallo" very often, as this particularly brutal and stylized subgenre of Italian horror doesn't have much crossover with the warm yuletide season. Christmas horror usually utilizes the aesthetics of the holiday season to either parody it and all that it brings, as is the case with the Silent Night, Deadly Night films. Or it takes a much more psychological approach, using and abusing our collectively wholesome Christmas memories in order to disrupt our warm and fuzzy associations with this time of year, as is the case with the classic slasher Black Christmas. Dario Argento's 1975 classic Deep Red employs the latter approach. While the movie doesn't completely take place during the Christmas season, the entire premise and the motivations of the central character are all rooted in Christmas.
