The film was released in 1999 and directed by Gil Junger. Alongside Heath Ledger, the film starred Julia Stiles as the female lead, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larry Miller in major roles. With the movie recently climbing to the number 9 spot on Amazon Prime Video, per Screenrant, it’s worth taking a look back at what happens in it.

‘The Roses’ Review: Benedict Cumberbatch And Olivia Colman In Witty Remake Of Marital Slugfest
Image
In 1989 director Danny DeVito brought a brutally funny dark comic approach to the screen adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War of the Roses. Now, 36 years later, along comes a remake from Searchlight Pictures called The Roses, leaving “The War of” reference out entirely. So this version’s director Jay Roach and screenwriter Tony McNamara have done what is called a “reimagination” rather than a remake, but of course it is a remake, and thanks in no small part to the casting of British acting icons Benedict Cumberbatch as Theo Rose and Olivia Colman as Ivy Rose, it is well worth your time to revisit this marital showdown first inhabited by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Nevertheless, the main event of the book and the previous film are the wickedly vicious fights between the couple, and Searchlight’s trailer seems...

Heath Ledger's Cult Classic: A Shakespearean Hit on Prime Video
Image
26 years after releasing in theaters, Heath Ledger’s cult classic teen comedy with a Shakespearean twist is a streaming hit on Prime Video.

Ledger became truly legendary with his performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, winning a posthumous Academy Award for his take on that most fascinating of Batman villains.

Though he is most associated with dramatic roles, thanks to movies like Dark Knight, Brokeback Mountain and others, Ledger did find his way into a couple of lighthearted comedies. 2001’s A Knight’s Tale may have been set in medieval times, but its tone was not as solemn as its subject matter might indicate.

Two years...

The 7 Best New Movies on Hulu Right Now
Image
Whether you’re looking for a teen comedy, action epic or bloody horror fest, Hulu has something for everyone in August. The streaming service added a number of hit movies and series to its library this month, including an all-time classic rom com and one of 2025’s best horror movies.

Here are the seven best new movies on Hulu in August.

Disney “10 Things I Hate About You”

only Adapting William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” in a 1990s schoolyard setting, the Julia Stiles/Heath Ledger-starring “10 Things I Hate About You” is a gold standard for teenage rom coms. Only four years in the wake of “Clueless” — a megahit modern-day update of Jane Austen’s “Emma” — it would be easy for a movie like this to feel like derivative old news.

Yet the film carries an infectious energy from moment one, mixing bursts of Shakespeare-like language with more modern parlance.

First Look at Chloé Zhao's Shakespeare Drama 'Hamnet' Starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley
Image
The works of William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, have been adapted to the screen countless times over the years, including classics like Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet. According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are about 410 film and television adaptations of his work, making Shakespeare the most adapted author of all time.

A few of the most famous Shakespeare adaptations include Laurence Olivier's Hamlet, Orson Welles' Macbeth (both 1948), and Baz Luhrmann's modernized Romeo + Juliet (1996), which brought the story to a new generation. There are also secret Shakespeare adaptations, such as 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), inspired by The Taming of the Shrew, and Anyone But You (2023), based on Much Ado About Nothing.

Beyond his plays, Shakespeare's life has been reimagined on screen. Shakespeare in Love (1998), a fictionalized romantic comedy about the playwright's early career and love life,...

Timothy Dalton turned down chance to play James Bond after Sean Connery
Image
Timothy Dalton played James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill, but the actor told Vanity Fair that he previously turned down the opportunity to replace Sean Connery after Diamonds Are Forever.

“There was a time when Sean Connery was leaving. I can’t say I was offered it, but I was asked if I’d like to do it or not,” Dalton explained. “And I said ‘No,’ because it seemed to me that the age of 24 or 25 doesn’t seem quite right for this character. … He needs to be [older]. You could play it at that younger age, but I don’t know that I’d believe it that much.”

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart Once Played A Shakespearean Character On Tng, And You Probably Missed It
Image
The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Defector" begins with Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) watching Data (Brent Spiner) enacting a scene from William Shakespeare's "Henry V" on the holodeck. For those who missed reading "Henry V" in high school, the story follows the young, recently crowned King Henry as he gears up to invade France. The young Hal struggles to be taken seriously, as his youth was spent carousing with drunks and lowlifes (as seen in "Henry IV" parts I and II). Hal, however, proves to be an inspiring battlefield presence, giving his fellow Englishmen the encouraging speeches they need to charge into battle. The play culminates at the Battle of Agincourt, which took place in 1415.

On "Star Trek," the scene that Data performs comes from Act IV, scene I, when King Henry has disguised himself as one of his own soldiers. He aims to infiltrate his men...

Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Tom Cruise Among the Hollywood Stars to Have Been Feted at Taormina Film Festival
Image
The Italian mainland boasts a host of film festivals from the giants like Venice, Torino and Rome to the specialist cinephile celebrations like the Bologna Cinema Ritrovato and Pordenone’s annual celebration of silent cinema. But few of them boast as beautiful and historical a setting as the ancient amphitheater that hosts the screenings of the Taormina Film Festival, which celebrates its 71st edition this year.

The Greco-Roman theater, which once saw spectators enjoying the spectacle of gladiators fighting ferocious beasts, now serves as an open air cinema where viewers have watched the likes of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Twisters.” Sometimes, Mount Etna will erupt in the distance, spouting plumes of molten lava and stealing the show. With such ancient history in mind, here’s a run through of some milestones in the admittedly shorter history of the Sicilian film festival:

● 1957 – The film festival, which had...

Alf Clausen, Emmy-Winning Composer for ‘The Simpsons,’ Dies at 84
Image
Alf Clausen, the veteran composer with two Emmy wins and 30 nominations whose whimsical scores brightened such television series as The Simpsons, Moonlighting and, purely coincidentally, Alf, has died. He was 84.

Clausen died Thursday at his Valley Village home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Kaarin Clausen, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy about eight years ago, she said.

From The Simpsons‘ second season in 1990 until its 28th in 2017, Clausen crafted many of the spirited melodies that contributed to the cutting-edge lunacy of the Fox animated show. From 23 Emmy nominations, he — along with lyricist Ken Keeler — won in 1997 and ’98 for the songs “We Put the Spring in Springfield” and “You’re Checkin’ In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center).”

His harmonious relationship with the show would not last, however, with Clausen filing a lawsuit against Disney and Fox in August 2019 after he was dismissed from The Simpsons.

'10 Things I Hate About You' Sequel Director Talks Adapting the Story for Modern Audiences
Image
10 Things I Hate About You, the 1999 teen comedy that defined an entire generation, is set to get a sequel. Gil Junger, who also directed the first film, is behind 10 Things I Hate About Dating, a project which he describes as having a similar vibe without being a direct sequel to the first entry. Junger says it is "a love story for people who've deleted the apps and re-downloaded them."

In 1999, teenagers didn't have any real idea what an app was or how relevant they would become to modern life. Instead, the original movie, inspired by Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, was a fresh and clever rendering of analog high school culture featuring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, among others. However, don't expect legacy characters to make an appearance in the sequel.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Junger spoke about the sequel he's developing...

10 Things I Hate About Dating | Sequel won’t be a romcom
Image
Director Gil Junger has been chatting about the direction of 10 Things I Hate About Dating, which won’t be a romcom this time…

After many years and one part-shot movie that never got released, director Gil Junger is finally working on a fresh follow-up to his delightful 1999 romcom, 10 Things I Hate About You.

The original starred Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. And as we’ve explored in the video that should pop up here, filming began on a sequel just over a decade ago. Filming, however, never finished…

In the last few weeks though, Gil Junger has revealed that he has a trilogy of follow-ups now in the works. 10 Things I Hate About Dating will be first, with the plan being to follow those with 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

But it...

Andor Creator Tony Gilroy Shares New Details About His Next, Non-Star Wars Movie
Image
After making his feature scripting debut with 1992's "The Cutting Edge," an agreeable figure skating riff on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly, Tony Gilroy quickly established himself as a Hollywood screenwriter to watch. Though he received only scattered praise for delivering a hugely engrossing adaptation of Stephen King's "Dolores Claiborne" and penning the niftily plotted medical thriller "Extreme Measures," his major rewrite of "The Devil's Advocate," which transformed a difficult-to-pin-down project into a shamelessly entertaining box office hit, placed him on the town's A-list.

While Gilroy didn't have a singular voice like his top-paid peers Shane Black, Joe Eszterhas, and Daniel Waters, he was highly valued by filmmakers for his wit, sense of storytelling structure, and lack of preciousness. He wasn't above tinkering on Michael Bay's silly "Armageddon" or Antoine Fuqua's action-comedy "Bait," which was likely because a) the money...

Post your questions for Julia Stiles
Heath Ledger at an event for Candy (2006)
Ahead of her directorial debut, ask the actor about her 00s romcoms, working with Heath Ledger and Julia Roberts and whether she is still a Duran Duran fan

Julia Stiles has been on our screens for almost three decades. After studying theatre in New York as a child, Stiles was cast as a disturbed teenager in the 1998 Michael Steinberg thriller Wicked. This led to her break-out role as the antisocial older sister of Larisa Oleynik and potential girlfriend of bad boy Heath Ledger in the 1999 Shakespeare-influenced 10 Things I Hate About You (based on The Taming of the Shrew). On screen, she then dated Freddie Prinze Jr in Down to You, and swapped ballet for hip-hop with Sean Patrick Thomas in Save the Last Dance.

As Stiles grew up, so did her characters. She played a young assistant to Betty Rizzo from Grease (Stockard Channing) in The Business of Strangers.

'10 Things I Hate About You' Sequel & Potential Trilogy In The Works
Image
"How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways?" That's the tagline featured on many of the posters for the 1999 teen classic,10 Things I Hate About You. Based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," the film was a fun balance of the playwright's sensibilities and the teen movie boom that exploded during the late 90s. It's one of the best-received films of its kind from that era and is still beloved today, which could be why the film's director, Gil Junger, is confident that a sequel will be successful. In fact, he has ideas that will go beyond making just one follow-up.

During a chat with People, Junger revealed that he is working on a follow-up to 10 Things I Hate About You and is penning the script with Naye Elle James. The director also says that the film's original producer, Andrew Lazar, is on board,...

Andrew Keegan, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Gabrielle Union, Susan May Pratt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, and Larisa Oleynik in 10 razones para odiarte (1999)
The 1999 high school comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, helped usher in Heath Ledger as a new breakout star on American shores. The movie was a modern day retelling of the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew and featured an ensemble cast that also included Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, Allison Janney and Larry Miller. The teen romance film would also become a hit as it opened second at the box office (having gone up against The Matrix) and grossed over $50 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It would also spawn a TV show adaptation on ABC Family in 2009. Deadline is reporting that the director of the original film, Gil Junger, is now planning to make a sequel trilogy to the 1999 comedy.

The sequel trilogy will also have a nod to the late star, Heath Ledger, who played the school’s rebellious student, Patrick Verona.

Andrew Keegan, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Gabrielle Union, Susan May Pratt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, and Larisa Oleynik in 10 razones para odiarte (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You director Gil Junger has revealed that an entirely new trilogy of follow-ups is in development.

According to a new report, we could be in line to get a whole slew of projects following up on the classic 1999 rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You.

Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play The Taming Of The Shrew about a warring would-be couple, the 1999 film starred Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. It retooled the play’s basic set-up into a classic American high school formula, with the teenage protagonists running afoul of each other at house parties, the football field and more, cleverly folding Shakespeare’s set-ups into genre conventions that we all know and love.

Gil Junger, the original film’s director, has revealed to People that over a quarter of a century later, the concept is being reimagined once more, with a trilogy being planned this time.

10 Things I Hate About You is a retelling of William Shakespeare’s 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew, and the film launched the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, showcasing a breakout performance by Alison Janney. The film became a generational touchstone with its keen insight into 1990s teen life as seen in a Seattle suburb.

Casting and a production timeline for the musical was not announced.

Jepsen launched a major music career with her 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe.

This 62-Year-Old Classic Broke Several Major John Wayne Western Trends (& Every Film Buff Needs to See It at Least Once)
Image
Quick LinksJohn Wayne’s McLintock! Broke Several Western TropesJohn Wayne’s McLintock! Is Based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the ShrewMcLintock! Was One of Several Films Starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara

McLintock!(1963) was both true to form and a departure for star John Wayne. By this point, he'd become well-known for his presence in Western films. And the formula remained crowd-pleasing even if not always a sure-fire win. Just three years prior, Wayne's The Alamo (1960) had performed below expectations, leaving Wayne disappointed. With McLintock!, he would return to the Western genre yet again, but this time on his own terms. The movie itself would take a more comedic approach than viewers had, perhaps, previously seen for Wayne to great success.

McLintock! took inspiration from surprising sources and proved to be a major win for Wayne. Not only that, he was able to do things his way and exert...

Timothy Dalton Got Asked to Play James Bond in His 20s, but ‘I Said No… 24 or 25 Doesn’t Seem Right’ for 007 and ‘You Don’t Want to Follow Sean Connery’
Image
Timothy Dalton said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he turned down an original offer to play James Bond in his mid-20s because he didn’t think the character should be that young. Dalton also didn’t want to directly follow Sean Connery, whose initial run as 007 ended after six movies with 1971’s “Diamonds Are Fever.” Franchise producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli approached Dalton in the early ’70s to replace Connery.

“There was a time when Sean Connery was leaving. I can’t say I was offered it, but I was asked if I’d like to do it or not,” Dalton said. “And I said ‘No,’ because it seemed to me that the age of 24 or 25 doesn’t seem quite right for this character. … He needs to be [older]. You could play it at that younger age, but I don’t know that I’d believe it that much.

The best films that capture the spirit and spectacle of prom
Image
The promenade dance, commonly referred to as a prom, is a dance party that high school students attend and which is typically held near or at the end of the school year. The event may be for either junior or senior year students individually or act as a combined event that includes both demographics. A Prom King and Queen may be revealed as well, and the event is noteworthy for many of those who attend. Girls may spend months looking for the perfect gown to wear at prom, which may end up being quite pricey as well. Providing a corsage for a prom date is another important aspect of prom, one which is meant to signify generosity and consideration and which should complement the colors of the dress for a unified look.

The tradition of prom has been depicted in numerous motion picture productions over the year as well, and...

15 Best Movies Like Anyone But You
Image
Despite releasing at the end of 2023, one of 2024's biggest sleeper hits at the box office was "Anyone But You," a romantic-comedy starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as former lovers who cross paths at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple in order to placate their respective families. Given the film's financial success, it shows a potential bright future for the rom-com genre, which in recent years has struggled to have the success it once had throughout the 2000s with hits like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Knocked Up."

Thanks to "Anyone But You," there are a lot of audiences with a renewed interest in satiating their desire for a raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com, especially ones with the hard-to-resist enemies-to-lovers trope, a disastrous wedding, or perhaps a reinterpretation a well-known story in the modern era. We've selected 15 of the best movies like "Anyone But You," including some superb romantic-comedies from recent history,...

Image
Colman Domingo, the star of shows like Euphoria and films like The Color Purple and If Beale Street Could Talk, has shared that his role as Victor Strand in the spin-off in The Walking Dead universe,Fear the Walking Dead, changed his entire career.

His role in Fear the Walking Dead was not exactly his first performance on television. Domingo had been featured before in numerous Law & Order episodes, but afterward he mostly stayed on the stage playing several characters in theater adaptations of classics like A Christmas Carol, Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew. In 2015, all that would change.

Domingo was a guest on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, and he recalled being approached with the idea of starring in a TV show and his initial thoughts were, "I was a theater snob. I was like, 'Absolutely not.'" The actor claims that it took a little...

25 Years Ago, This Iconic Rom-Com Became a Genre-Defining Classic
Image
With Valentine’s season finally here, the urge to watch rom-coms of the past and present is more prevalent than ever. Watching two people fall in love over the course of an hour and a half despite the wacky hijinks and shenanigans that get thrown their way offers a charming and romantic experience for audiences. Love stories have always been an important and beloved part of pop culture and media, but arguably no decade was better for the genre than the late 1990s and early 2000s.

From How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to 13 Going on 30 to The Wedding Planner, that era produced beloved classics that still get referenced and watched in 2025. One classic 1999 film was not only the strongest of that era, but continued to be cherished by rom-com fans all the way through the modern day. 10 Things I Hate About You became a genre-defining classic thanks to...

Emma Stone Had a Pocketful of Sunshine in This A+ Satire Coming to Hulu

Nothing quite screams the late aughts and early 2010's like a comedy loosely related to a classic work of literature. There was She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes, which was based on the William Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. There was the absolute classic that was 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and the late-great Heath Ledger, which was based on The Taming of the Shrew. In 2010, one comedy came about loosely related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Now, Easy A starring Emma Stone, is coming to Hulu next month.

Julia Stiles Reflects on Heath Ledger in '10 Things I Hate About You'
Image
10 Things I Hate About You star Julia Stiles remembers working with the late actor Heath Ledger on the teen comedy that would change the lives of all the young performers who worked in the film. Decades after they played Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, Stiles recalls the "energy and passion" of the performer who sadly passed away in 2008 after an accidental drug overdose.

As reported by CinemaBlend, Stiles appeared as a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and spent some of her time reflecting on co-starring with Heath Ledger in the film. Stiles and Ledger played Kat and Verona, respectively, and the couple ultimately became one of the iconic duos in the '90s teen comedy sub-genre. Here's what Stiles had to say about working with the actor who eventually won the posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight...

It has been nearly 17 years since Oscar winner Heath Ledger’s death, and now his one-time co-star, Julia Stiles, is remembering the actor. Stiles starred with Ledger in 1999’s classic teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Per People, Stiles, while promoting the film Wish You Were Here on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, touched on working with Ledger on the movie.

“He was such a force,” said Stiles, who co-wrote and makes her directorial debut with Wish You Were Here, which hits theaters Jan. 17. “He walked into a room and just lit it up and had so much energy and passion, and it’s really sad that he’s gone,” Stiles said.

The 10 Best Movies Like 10 Things I Hate About You
Image
When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

If you're a fan of the classic teen comedy, but you're getting tired of rewatching Kat recite the titular poem,...

What Are The Differences Between 10 Things I Hate About You & Taming Of The Shrew?
Image
This article briefly mentions abuse and misogyny.

William Shakespeare's extensive body of work has been subject to countless adaptations. Whether it's a film clearly based on Shakespeare's story or one with more subtle connections, there are plenty out there to choose from. One of these is the 16th-century comedy The Taming of the Shrew, which was memorably retold in the beloved 1999 teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Despite the basic plot being the same, these two tales have some notable differences.

10 Things I Hate About You and its source material, The Taming of the Shrew, essentially follow two sisters and their potential love interests. The sisters are vastly different — the eldest is deemed a "shrew" or just generally difficult to be with, while the youngest is highly desirable. With the film being a modern version of the original play, there is plenty that diverges from Shakespeare's initial premise,...

Image
Brian Cox has given a frank response to one of his iconic stage roles going to Anthony Hopkins onscreen. Cox is an award-winning performer on both stage and screen. Since his career began in the 1960s, he has been nominated for two British Theatre Association Drama Awards, five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards.

Cox is best known in the modern age as one of the leads of the Succession cast, having played patriarch Logan Roy across all four seasons of the popular HBO drama. However, he has held a variety of onscreen roles in iconic properties over the years, including playing Samara's father in The Ring, William Stryker in X2: X-Men United, CIA Deputy Director Ward Abbott in The Bourne Identity and its sequel The Bourne Supremacy, Captain O'Hagan in the Super Troopers movies, and more.

Prime Video's Remake Of A Sarah Michelle Gellar Cult Classic Is A Streaming Hit
Image
When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."

Why did the film work so well? Columbia Pictures' willingness to release the film with an R rating allowed Kumble to push much further with the sensuality. He also had an absolute juggernaut of a young cast in Sarah Michelle Gellar,...

Turkish ‘Love Is in the Air’ Star Kerem Bürsin on Starting His Career With Roger Corman and Why New Comedy ‘Son of a Rich’ Will ‘Break Some Barriers’ (Exclusive)
Image
Kerem Bürsin never planned to be a Turkish megastar.

Though he was born in Istanbul, he spent his formative years living internationally and attended high school in Texas, where he began acting in theater productions. He then set off for L.A., where he worked with the legendary Roger Corman, but still “kept coming across the matter of my nationality,” as he tells Variety.

“Some agents were telling me, ‘I have to change your name,'” he says. “I would ask them why, and they would say: ‘Because you don’t look Turkish, you don’t sound Turkish and you’re pretty much American. So it’s just not going to work.'”

Eventually he returned to his home country — which turned out to be the right decision, as lead roles in globally exported TV shows “Waiting for the Sun” and “Love Is in the Air” have made him one...

Anyone But You Failed Where This 25-Year-Old Shakespeare Rom-Com With 71% On Rotten Tomatoes Succeeded
Image
Last year, Anyone But You had audiences excited about the great return of the rom-com genre. The film had promising star potential in Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. However, its stars are dimmed considerably by a story that halted any real character development. Anyone But You is adapted from William Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing. A hallmark of movies based on Shakespearean stories is their ability to find a strong central message amid a cacophony of intertwining narratives, and Anyone But You contorted its source material so much that all of its ensemble characters fall flat.

On the contrary, a very different contemporary Shakespeare adaptation did the Bard justice 25 years ago. 10 Things I Hate About You is adapted from Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, another comedy. In this film, Julia Stiles stars as the shrew in question, Kat Stratford, a radical feminist high schooler and punk...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From McLintock!
Image
John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

The Ford movie could've been Wayne's Western swan song, but a rifle-toting Wayne astride a horse still held commercial appeal,...

10 Things I Hate About You Almost Got A Very Dark Sequel (& I'm So Glad It Didn't)
Image
Mentions of suicide.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of the most popular and beloved teen movies and rom-coms of the 1990s, and though it told a complete story, it almost got a very dark sequel that Im glad never happened. Teen comedies and rom-coms went through a great run in the 1990s and early 2000s, and among the best is 10 Things I Hate About You. Directed by Gil Junger, 10 Things I Hate About You is a modern take on William Shakespeares comedy The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school in 1999.

10 Things I Hate About You follows new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who, after learning that his crush, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), cant date anyone unless her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does, comes up with an elaborate plan with his friend: trick arrogant but wealthy senior Joey (Andrew Keegan) into paying...

Divorce, Hollywood Style: It All Leads Back to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Image
Celebrity divorces last longer than celebrity marriages, and perhaps afford the public more sheer entertainment. Hearing about the clashing of egos, the mutual narcissism, the profligacy — it all makes us rather relieved to be living our littler, more anonymous lives.

“It’s easy to get into a marriage,” a Californian lawyer said, rubbing his hands with glee, “and very difficult to get out of one.” Love curdles into hatred, and soon enough it’s like the Wild West.

Currently, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, who said “I do” two years ago in Las Vegas, are hiring their attack dogs, i.e. their expensive attorneys, to argue about ownership of a $60 million-plus house in Beverly Hills, which has twelve bedrooms and twenty-four bathrooms.

Affleck earned $38 million last year — Jennifer might want a piece of that. Will she keep the $5 million engagement ring? There is much additional community property – a “bachelor pad” in Brentwood,...

Yvonne Furneaux, Actress in Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’ and Polanski’s ‘Repulsion,’ Dies at 98

Yvonne Furneaux, the glamorous actress who had memorable performances in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Le Amiche, Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, has died. She was 98.

Furneaux died July 5 at her home in North Hampton, New Hampshire, of complications from a stroke, her son, Nicholas Natteau, told The Hollywood Reporter.

She also was the female lead in the Hammer horror film The Mummy (1959), starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Though she considered the project less than ideal, she said she ultimately learned from those actors that “if you don’t take a film like The Mummy seriously and put your heart and soul into it, then you can bring it down,” she explained in Mark A. Miller’s 2010 book, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and Horror Cinema.

She starred in Italian, French, German and Spanish films during her career.
