The film was released in 1999 and directed by Gil Junger. Alongside Heath Ledger, the film starred Julia Stiles as the female lead, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larry Miller in major roles. In 1989 director Danny DeVito brought a brutally funny dark comic approach to the screen adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War of the Roses. Now, 36 years later, along comes a remake from Searchlight Pictures called The Roses, leaving “The War of” reference out entirely. So this version’s director Jay Roach and screenwriter Tony McNamara have done what is called a “reimagination” rather than a remake, but of course it is a remake, and thanks in no small part to the casting of British acting icons Benedict Cumberbatch as Theo Rose and Olivia Colman as Ivy Rose, it is well worth your time to revisit this marital showdown first inhabited by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Alf Clausen, the veteran composer with two Emmy wins and 30 nominations whose whimsical scores brightened such television series as The Simpsons, Moonlighting and, purely coincidentally, Alf, has died. He was 84.

Clausen died Thursday at his Valley Village home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Kaarin Clausen, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy about eight years ago, she said.

From The Simpsons‘ second season in 1990 until its 28th in 2017, Clausen crafted many of the spirited melodies that contributed to the cutting-edge lunacy of the Fox animated show. From 23 Emmy nominations, he — along with lyricist Ken Keeler — won in 1997 and ’98 for the songs “We Put the Spring in Springfield” and “You’re Checkin’ In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center).”

His harmonious relationship with the show would not last, however, with Clausen filing a lawsuit against Disney and Fox in August 2019 after he was dismissed from The Simpsons.

Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play The Taming Of The Shrew about a warring would-be couple, the 1999 film starred Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. It retooled the play’s basic set-up into a classic American high school formula, with the teenage protagonists running afoul of each other at house parties, the football field and more, cleverly folding Shakespeare’s set-ups into genre conventions that we all know and love.

Gil Junger, the original film’s director, has revealed to People that over a quarter of a century later, the concept is being reimagined once more, with a trilogy being planned this time.

Furneaux died July 5 at her home in North Hampton, New Hampshire, of complications from a stroke, her son, Nicholas Natteau, told The Hollywood Reporter.

She also was the female lead in the Hammer horror film The Mummy (1959), starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Though she considered the project less than ideal, she said she ultimately learned from those actors that “if you don’t take a film like The Mummy seriously and put your heart and soul into it, then you can bring it down,” she explained in Mark A.
