Otto Krueger was actually not German, despite his excellent language and accent. His family was Dutch (via South Africa), but he was born in Toledo, Ohio. To this day, Ohio still has a highly visible and highly active German-American community.
During WWI, dachshunds were called "liberty hounds" in the States to try to counteract the anti-German sentiment.
An early example in a long line of films where the character played by Ralph Bellamy is the second romantic lead and loses or doesn't get the girl.
Anti-German sentiment was feverish during WWI, with long-standing American citizens targeted alongside newer immigrants. Harassment, assaults, job losses, sudden house foreclosures, and even murders were unfortunately common for anyone even suspected of German heritage (e.g., Dutch, Belgians, Swiss).
This film had its world premiere showing at the Hollywood Theatre on Broadway in New York City on 12 October 1933.
