Trama

A wanted gangster is both king and prisoner of the Casbah. He's protected from arrest by his friends, but is torn by his desire for freedom. A visiting Parisian beauty may determine his fate.

Holed up in the labyrinthine trap of narrow cobblestoned streets and dark dead-end alleys in the bustling Casbah quarter of Algiers, the charismatic leader and elegant Parisian gangster, Pépé le Moko, is starting to reach the end of his tether. Under those pressing circumstances, and always homesick for his beloved Paris after two long years in the impenetrable district, Pépé and his loyal gang find themselves in a constant cat-and-mouse game with the local police and the sly, manipulative detective, Inspector Slimane, trying hard to be one step ahead of them. But, as if that weren't enough, a chance encounter with the dazzling coquette, Gaby, will expose the Achilles' heel of the love-smitten lord of the Casbah, who is now eager to dice with death only to be with her. Pépé le Moko is a gangster from Paris that hides in Algier's Casbah. In the Casbah, he is safe and is able to elude the police's attempts to capture him, but he misses his freedom after two years in the Casbah. He meets a gorgeous Parisian tourist, Gaby, and they fall in love. Native inspector Slimane tries to use her to lure Pépé out of the Casbah in order to catch him.—Yepok

In 1930s Algeria, the charming Parisian gangster Pépé le Moko (Jean Gabin) rules in the district of Casbah. Surrounded and protected by the women and his gang, he is unattainable by the French and Algerian police forces, but also he has been imprisoned in the area for two years, and he misses his former life in Paris and Marseilles. The police unsuccessfully try to bring Pépé le Moko to the center of Algiers to capture him. The astute and ambiguous Algerian inspector Slimane (Lucas Gridoux) promises to arrest Pépé le Moko the day he leaves Casbah.
