Boring boring and boring, just wasted 2hrs of my life waiting something to happen. And those paintings my two years old draws better, 4 points for cinematography, acting was so wooden. Avoid at all costs.
A superlative movie about the life and work of Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck. This is one of the finest movies about an artist I have ever seen. It captures so much of the artist's emotional inner life and her resulting work. Great script, great casting, great performances and the art direction and photography are incredible. Many sequences are filmed with each shot set up as if it were a living painting. The lighting and color are amazing. If you love art this will make you want to paint.
I knew nothing about her and this movie just showed me in 2hr beautiful photography and amazing acting (Laura Birn/ Helene, friend and mother) but little else. It seems to me that there was much more to see that her suffering about her lover around all, ALL the time. Her paintings are shown very little, the sparse dialogue and the slow pace are there for dissimulate a poor script and direction. Helene Schjerfbeck deserves something better than this film.
There is no doubt that there is a high demand for feature films promoting women artists and entrepreneurs. Of particular interest are those who have achieved success and recognition, as they serve as a source of inspiration and striving for success among the younger generation.
However, to a modern viewer, it may seem that this film lacks action and thrills. And synergy with contemporary issues.
However, there is always room for improvement. For example, the plot could have two main characters - one Elena, and the other lives in the modern world and, like Elena, has a strong desire to invest her life in her own goals, achieving professional and personal growth.
The theme of the struggle for women's rights has been extremely important in all areas since the time of the Roman Empire and attracted the attention of not only women, but also men who bow to strong and independent women.
And the role of women in Finland has always been great, and it is not for nothing that the Finns became the first nation to give women the right to political elections, and now they have a woman prime minister.

Amazingly beautiful, amazingly touching. I am male, 59 years of age and do not cry very often. And yet my tears were pouring. Antti J. Jokinen has definately made his best movie so far. The cast is excellent, but Laura Birn as Helene Schjerfbeck is magical. Do not miss this!!
