A João Guimarães Rosa

Interesting concept and idea but lacking a higher appeal and even a declared purpose, which is to pay a tribute to novelist Guimarães Rosa a year after his death. His classic novel "Grande Sertão Veredas" has some of its passages read by actor Humberto Marçal as countless of black-and-white stills are presented, making a vivid portrayal of the man's words and his usual topics about the Northeast, the rural world of common people, the desertic location and their emotions and feelings.

There are a couple of cool editing effects and transitions during the 11-minute montage but the movie as an experience to be felt rewards viewers with almost nothing. Haven't read the book, neither felt curious if considering this movie alone; outside of that department it's in a long list of classics that I need to read. As a combination of literature and images this is quite disappointing; an adaptation would suit best - it got one as a TV miniseries, also yet to be seen and found. 5/10.
