Dr. Duntch was originally to be played by Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey), only to be replaced by Joshua Jackson due to conflicts from COVID-19. Dornan and his family were in New York for filming when the pandemic hit the US, and the Country began to shut down. Dornan (& family) were able to return to the UK safely.
The series' working title was "The Dirty Deeds of Duntsch," but Joshua Jackson threatened to leave the production unless it was changed.
Spinal access is an essential component of spinal fusion procedures. Spinal fusion is used to relieve pain through the stabilization of a segment of the spine. A minimally invasive spinal fusion procedure joins two or more vertebrae, creating a solid structure between them. The fusion stops or reduces movement, causing pain and giving the patient some measure of relief. Spinal fusion treats degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis (where one of the bones in your spine, called a vertebra, slips forward), and other painful spinal conditions. During minimally invasive spine surgery, bone material is grafted onto the spine using titanium cages (spacers), plates, rods, and screws. Spinal fusion may be done using several techniques. A posterior approach accesses the patient's spine from the back. Anterior techniques access the patient's spine from the front of the body, and lateral procedures access the spine from the side. There are multiple variations of oblique, anterior, and lateral spinal access surgery techniques, and some cases require various methods to ensure the best outcome for the patient.
Contrary to one of the concluding statements in the final episode, medical error is not the third leading cause of death in the United States. The idea originated in the British Medical Journal in 2016 from meta-analysis, that is, combining a small number of studies done in populations that were not meant to be representative of the entire U.S. population and that were not designed to prove a link between a medical error and death. Better data and a comprehensive study of this serious matter is still needed.
