The revival of American Idol continues with its eighth season on ABC and 23rd overall. The Top 24 hopefuls were chosen from those who survived Hollywood Week, where each had to sing in the Showstopper round to convince the three judges — Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan — that they deserved a place in the American Idol Top 24.

In turn, each of these finalists performed for America's vote from Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii. Grammy winner Ashanti and Grammy nominee Josh Groban served as mentors alongside this season's Artist in Residence, Jelly Roll. After returning to Hollywood, the Top 20 were revealed and continued to perform for America's vote each week until a champion was crowned.

Season 23 of American Idol premiered Sunday, March 9 on ABC will continue to air on Sunday and Monday nights until the live finale in May.

After months and months of auditions, showstoppers, and live shows, the winner of American Idol Season 23 was finally crowned on May 18. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.)

The final three contestants — pop-country singer Breanna Nix, R&b artist Jamal Roberts, and country star John Foster — went head-to-head-to-head during ABC's three-hour finale on Sunday night. After America voted live coast-to-coast, Jamal was named the winner, John finished as the runner-up, and Breanna came in third place.

Jamal is now the second Black man to win American Idol after Season 2's Ruben Studdard 22 years ago, in 2003. Meanwhile, there have been four Black women to prevail: Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, and Just Sam.

When is the finale?

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 18, as that is ABC's airdate for the three-hour finale of American Idol. It will air live coast-to-coast beginning at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The full episode will stream later on Hulu, the official home to reruns of ABC's reality TV program.

ABC has announced the lineup of superstar guests for its upcoming Season 23 finale, and the Top 14 are among them. The Final 5 contestants — Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, John Foster, Slater Nalley, and Thunderstorm Artis — will appear alongside the nine most recently eliminated artists: Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, Josh King, Canaan James Hill, Kolbi Jordan, Ché Chesterman, Filo, Amanda Barise, and Desmond Roberts.

The three judges — Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie — will sing a showstopping number together, and "Artist in Residence" Jelly Roll will deliver a performance in addition to his role as the season finale mentor. Luke and Lionel joined ABC's reality TV show in 2018, while this marks Carrie's first time sitting at the judges' table after previously winning Season 4.

The power shifts this week on American Idol. Judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan have narrowed the pool of contestants down to the Top 24 and now it's up to America to decide who stays and who goes home.

Tonight, half of the Top 24 will perform from Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii. The other half will perform on Monday, April 14. After America's votes are counted, two singers from each night will be eliminated when the Top 20 are revealed during a special "Songs of Faith" episode on Sunday, April 20. Mentoring tonight's group is American Idol's Artist in Residence, Jelly Roll, and Grammy winner Ashanti.

In a further expansive move, London-based Protagonist Pictures is teaming with Madrid’s Mogambo, executive producers on “1917,” for a multi-year, multi-title strategic financing and production partnership.

Announced on the cusp of the Cannes Festival, the deal sees the two companies allying to finance, co-produce and sell up to five films a year, Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop and Cco George Hamilton, announced alongside Mogambo founders Ignacio Salazar-Simpson and Ricardo Marco Budé.

They added in a statement that the partnership will focus on jointly green-lighting prestige third party filmmaker-driven titles with budget ranges of 5 million-25 million, as well as strategic co-productions and development.

Negotiated by Mogambo’s legal director Carlos Segovia and Protagonist’s COO James Pugh, Hamilton and Head of Acquisitions Luane Gauer, the alliance is another building brick for both companies as they seek to leverage co-production to create bigger and more ambitious movie productions.
