RELEASED TO TV IN 2017 and written & directed by Sheldon Wilson, "Stickman" chronicles events when a 7 year-old girl is accused of murdering her mother & sister and put in a mental institution. She's finally released ten years later and finds residence at a halfway house for girls. Unfortunately, the evil spirit that slew her kin is on the loose again and threatens all the girls at her new residence. A few of them travel back to the hospital to find a way to put an end to the creature's reign of terror.

There's a lot of good in this flick: The filmmaking is proficient for a TV-budgeted movie; the locations are decent, which include the asylum, the transitional home, and points in between, like the town and the woods (there are several cool shots of a truss bridge in the dark); it's nice to have a black protagonist for a change (Hayley Law); the five other girls at the halfway house are all regular lasses with no stereotypical "hottie," although a few of them COULD have played that role (e.g. Sara Garcia, Sarah Fisher, Zoé De Grand Maison, etc.).

In addition, the film successfully creates a spooky ambiance here and there, e.g. in the woods near the psyche facility; and the demon is pretty effective for a CGI monster, coming across as a meshing of the demon from "Scarecrow" (2013), the aliens in "Signs" (2002) and maybe Freddy Krueger (i.e. the claws).

Unfortunately, I didn't buy the premise behind the creature, which came across as half-baked gobbledygook; the poem that unleashes the demon reads like it was written by a 13 year-old and the climatic explanation didn't resolve the overall ill-conceived impression. This naturally hinders the movie from being engaging; it limits the thrust of events and therefore suspense.

Note to emerging filmmakers: Work the kinks out of your premise BEFORE making the movie. The director, Sheldon Wilson, needs to work on his scriptwriting skills because the movies he writes tend to be problematic story-wise ("The Hollow," "The Night Before Halloween," "Neverknock" and this one) while his movies written by others can be quite good for TV-budgeted flicks ("Mothman," "Red, Werewolf Hunter" and the aforementioned "Scarecrow," which is excellent).

Lastly, the final scene is predictably lame. Still, there's enough good here to make "Stickman" worthwhile for those who appreciate these kinds of flicks.

THE FILM RUNS about 89 minutes. There's no info on where it was shot, but since this is a Canadian production it might've been somewhere outside Toronto.

So I stumbled on this little title last night as my partner and I were looking for something to watch. Now if you have read my past reviews you will notice that we watch mostly horror films, so we are pretty good judges of this genre. Firstly the film was simple in terms of story, the usual thing. This time an urban legend comes to life via a poem read out loud. The acting was pretty good all round, nothing really bad and nothing stand outish. The effects were mostly on par, sometimes when you see the monster fully the effects are below par and the tension goes away from the scene, this happened in this movie. Sometimes a film is better when you don't see the monster so much. One thing I found funny was when the main character aged ten years, she looked the same as she did earlier in the film, because they used the same actress, this scene little as it was didn't work. Not a bad movie overall, worth a loom.

Saw 'Stickman', being fond of horror regardless of budget (even if not my favourite genre) and being intrigued somewhat by the idea. Being behind on my film watching and reviewing, with a long to watch and review list that keeps getting longer, it took me a while to get round to watching and reviewing it.

Giving 'Stickman' a fair chance with being interest and apprehension, it turned out to be far better than expected. Won't say that 'Stickman' is a great film because it isn't and the potential, while not wasted, is not fully lived up to. Considering the large number of films seen recently being mediocre and less and wasting potential, was expecting worse and was relieved that while wanting in a fair few areas it was actually one of my better recent low-budget viewings.

'Stickman' started off quite well, the first twenty minutes or so starting the film off on a promising, unsettling and atmospheric note that really does intrigue.

Production values did have some eeriness and nowhere near as cheap as expected, and the music, which not the most memorable in the world, didn't detract from the atmosphere.

The setting is effectively spooky and some of the lead acting at times was not bad. There are spooky and suspenseful moments and it isn't dull. The direction doesn't feel phoned in and the storytelling in the first half does intrigue.

However, the story was severely wanting in the second half after starting off promisingly. It is very disjointed and after the promising start the final third especially loses atmosphere, one loses interest and things start to not make sense. Too much of the film is vague and doesn't explore some elements and story strands enough, some dropped soon after being introduced, go nowhere or serve much point.

Ending is unsatisfying, on top of feeling hasty there are too many loose ends hanging in the air. Got the sense that the writers didn't know how to end the film. Would have liked much more tension and suspense, scares could have been more consistent and some weren't surprising enough.

Found too the script to lack natural flow and with a fair bit of cheese going on, and the characters bland with some adopting some annoying and not always logical decision making. The support acting is even more problematic than the second half's storytelling, at best it was poor and too often terrible.

Overall, better than expected but not great still. 5/10 Bethany Cox

We have all seen that horror movie where some dumb girlfriend goes into the creepy dark monster dungeon looking for her equally dumb boyfriend who was just killed by the monster only to be killed by the very same monster as punishment for being dumb. That is this movie, so you have already seen this movie. If I had to write a 2 page essay on the topic of what was unique about this movie, I would receive a failing grade. There is pretty much no question that this is a somewhat late attempt to cash in on the slenderman meme. If I had to describe the personalities of the lead characters in this film, the phrase "very afraid and doesn't want to die" would be used repeatedly. Many characters literally have no distinguishing personality traits beyond that. At least in crappy 80s horror there would be the jock and the bimbo and the nerd and the coward etc. Different characters to create some variety and keep that character interactions dynamic. The monster itself is a cartoon and the practical effects were basically the bare minimum (blood splatter, corpse without its head, etc.). Expect a lot of off screen deaths.

For a tv movie this is not too bad. The acting and script are a bit shoddy in places, but it is worth a watch. Definitely not the worse horror out there. I give this 4 out of 10 because horror is my preffered genre and there ars many greats. 4 being enjoyable but by no means great. If this had a bigger budget and a better script then could have been 5-6

Perfect middle of the day, off from work, nothing else on type of movie. Not bad, but not great either. On par with Crooked Man. Nowhere near as good as The Babadook.

Very corny and campy. I usually like campy, because campy horror movies are usually funny. Unfortunately, this movie is not funny. The movie is not very good. Sone of the acting is terrible.

I honestly enjoyed this movie,which is saying a lot when SYFY movies (and Canadian),are usually so bad.The acting was excellent and convincing,special effects were way above SYFY standard effects,as was the cinematography. Yes the story line was cliche'd as was the ending,but lets face it,you didn't watch it thinking this was going to be a masterpiece.I'm not going to sit here and over analylise it as one reviewer has,it's not that sort of movie,seriously dude,get a life.Take this movie for what it is,a pretty good horror movie worth a watch,enjoy.

Suffering from a series of strange dreams, a woman with a history involving a strange figure that forces her into bizarre behavioral patterns finds the creature is loose and stalking her friends forcing them to band together to find a way to stop it once and for all.

This ended up being quite the decent and enjoyable effort. What really makes this one seem enjoyable is the fact that there's a reasonably enjoyable and sensible backstory for the creature at the core of this one. Taking into account the main poem at the heart of the creatures' origins, this setup is quite fun and manages to bring out a rather enjoyable time here when giving all the different guidelines for his resurrection as well as the rather complex rules that are featured here for his emergence makes for a generally effective creature. The amount of time he has here isn't that bad, either, giving this one a really strong overall setup which generates some solid stalking scenes, from the opening dream sequence on the bus to the first encounter in the sanitarium and the incredibly chillings attacks at the foster home that sets the whole plot in motion. Other big scenes include the creature attacking the couple in their car driving along the freeway which offers all the usual fun of trying to keep the creature from breaking through and leading into the stellar crash while the second half has some fun with the group in the asylum looking for answers to the creature as it begins knocking the group off throughout the hallways which give this a kind of rather exciting kick during this section of the film. With some fine encounters surrounding this with some fun in the convenience store and the group out in the woods as there are some decent enough times here with the creature resulting in some solid gory kills throughout here. These hold the film up over its rather blatant flaws along the way. The most apparent issue here is the fact that there's just no reason here for the connection to the poem and the creatures' release, as this is severely underwhelming and really seems quite unlikely. This is the easiest problem to fix and doesn't really deserve to be as big an issue as it is due to the central premise being it as the notion works, but the whole concept is a big enough issue. As well, there are some big issues with how long it takes for the creature to become known to the group as this has some pretty lame reasons to keep them from believing her even after witnessing an attack that she couldn't be responsible so this one does have an issue there. Along with some spotty CGI for the creature, these here hold this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Language.

This was actually a rather surprisingly nice movie for a SyFy production. Yeah, they usually put out some rather questionable movies. But every now and again they do strike gold, and they happened to do so with "Stickman".

Sure while the storyline was generic as in terms of horror movies go, but it was still an entertaining movie.

They had some nicely talented acting performers to fill out the various roles and characters. I will say that the performance level was quite adequate all-round.

There was a good continuous flow to the storyline, which made for better enjoyment of the movie, for sure.

And the creature itself was actually rather nicely made. And this being a horror movie, you of course need to have a proper scary creature or special effects. SyFy did manage to deliver here.

So you might want to sit down and watch "Stickman" if you enjoy a good old fashioned creature feature.

Your typical horrible SyFy movie (with the oh so tired "okay we have a new kid at a foster home, let's make a veteran foster kid be an absolute dick to them" trope) only redeemed by the fact that the lead actress, Hayley Law, is very captivating and definitely had a future ahead of her. I'd love to see her in a good movie or series.

The worst actress award goes to the one that played Emma. She worked for pocket change, she was so bad

This movie is weirdly paced and the writing is not good. The "creepy poem" is really bad and they read it too many times, like 3 or 4 in the first five minutes. Mean girl characters are obnoxiously mean girl characters. Fails only slightly less than the bye bye man in making a stupid named villain scary. I actually laughed every time they said his name and acted like it was ominous. It's just messy writing, painfully so. For example we go to a foster home for troubled girls and in not even two minutes they have to hamfistedly tell the audience what each girl is there for. Example: "she's such a dark web freak, trying to burn the whole system down, well at least I didn't burn my own house down" so hokey. And if this poem is so dangerous why the hell has she been carrying it around for a decade. Characters are two dimensional. One is the angry tough girl, one is the paranoid smart girl.

But the monster looks great! It doesn't look like a ps2 game monster and they do a good job not showing it in broad view. And the movie is well shot it looks very good. We'll edited too.

Not enough to make up for dumb characters and a dumb premise that has been done by a billion other movies.

Can't stress enough how stupid the poem thing is. It's so dumb.

I went into this with no bias, no expectations. Pleasantly surprised and entertained. Sure, this is a made for TV movie and no it's not star studded.....big deal. If you are truly a fan of the genre then celebrate all the efforts! I recommend this based on the story alone...no expectations.

The ten-year-old girl Emma Wright (Hayley Law) is admitted in the Hollybrooke mental institution after being accused of killing her mother and sister. She claims that an evil supernatural entity named Stickman has killed her family after being summed by a poem, and she has frequent nightmares with him. Her only friend is the teenager Jeremy (Erik Knudsen), who also knows the Stickman. After several years, Dr. Fenton (Anthony Lemke) replaces her former doctor and implements a different treatment to Emma. She also learns how to trap the Stickman. One year later, she is considered healed and is sent to a foster home managed by Mrs. Hill (Valerie Buhagiar). She immediately befriends the teenager Paige (Sara Garcia) and is introduced to the rebel Liv (Zoé De Grand Maison); Tess (Sarah Fisher); Andrea (Alanna Bale) and Kate (Marianna Phung). However, Liv opens her bag, takes a handwritten poem and reads it loud. Now Emma advises that Liv has summoned the Stickman and they will all be dead, unless she succeeds to trap the being again. But she needs to meet Jeremy first and she returns to Hollybrooke.

"Stickman" is a Canadian horror movie for the Sci-Fi channel with a supernatural being summoned by a poem, like, for example, "Candyman" when his name is repeated five times in front of a mirror. The plot is not bad as indicated by many reviews and fans of slashers will not be disappointed. The cliffhanger in the conclusion is not good and is only to leave a hook for a possible sequel. My vote is six.

This movie wasn't too bad, but it's not something I am going to go out of my way to recommend or to watch again. For a one time watch, it was great.

There were a few dumb parts and dumb decisions. I won't point them out, but I will point out these were young kids and you cannot apply adult logic to boys there age.

In regards to the bumper sticker on the car, people need to get over it. If the Trump supporters watching the movie had seen a Hillary sticker on the bumper, they would have thought it was hilarious. You can't have it both ways. QAnon supporters have falsely accused Democrats for years of being child traffickers. If you don't condemn that, don't condemn this. It is SO unimportant to the movie.

I enjoyed, saved the very last two minutes because I felt that was just thrown in there. Of course there were inconsistencies and questionable actions, but really what movie doesn't contain those things. Grab some snacks, a blanket, curl up on the couch and enjoy it too.
