Olivia Wilde Responds To Backlash Over Calling Aap Rocky ‘Hot’ During Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
Image
Olivia Wilde is responding after facing backlash for calling Aap Rocky “hot” during Rihanna‘s Super Bowl Lvii halftime performance Sunday. Wilde took to her Instagram Stories in to share a since-deleted snap, in which she shared her adoration for the rapper.

“If I thought he was hot before, this really put me over the edge,” the “Don’t Worry Darling” director wrote above a video of Rocky filming RiRi during Sunday’s show.

It didn’t take fans long to take to Twitter to comment on Wilde’s post, calling it “inappropriate.”

“She’s really living up to that last name [of] hers,” one Twitter user quipped of the newly single Wilde.

“This is so inappropriate,” another wrote. “She needs to chill asap,” a third person tweeted.

Wilde, who tagged both Rihanna and Rocky in the original post, took to her Stories just a mere hours later to set the record straight,...

Backlog of New Dutch Films Lined Up for Fall Release
Image
A perfect storm of titles previously delayed by the pandemic combined with features set to launch on the back of the Netherlands Film Festival later this month means that a bumper harvest of home-grown films is set for release in Dutch theaters this autumn.

Anticipated titles include Alex van Warmerdam’s latest feature “No. 10,” which tells the story of an actor who cannot recall his past but who is strong-armed into his future by a group of strangers.

“Goldie” director Sam de Jong also looks set to return with his third film, “Met Mes,” a satire about the media focusing on a TV personality who exaggerates the theft of a new camera, which leads to unforeseen consequences.

Other films creating buzz include “My Father Is an Aeroplane,” directed by Antoinette Beumer (“Jackie”), which is set to open the Netherlands Film Festival.

Based on Beumer’s 2018 novel it tells the story...

Image
David Lander, the comic actor best known for playing “Squiggy” on Laverne & Shirley, has died at the age of 73 following a decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis.

The actor’s family confirmed to Variety that Lander died Friday evening at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife Kathy by his side.

From 1976 to 1983, over the stretch of over 150 episodes, Lander played the role of Andrew “Squiggy” Squiggman on Laverne & Shirley, opposite actor Michael McKean’s Lenny; the two actors began collaborating together when they were both students at Carnegie Mellon University,...

Netflix Added 2 New Movies And 1 New TV Show Today
Image
After only adding one new program on Saturday, Netflix have released two new movies and one new TV series today. In a week where the streaming platform continues to add a diverse range of content, today we received the films Goldie and Woodshock, as well as season 1 of Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, joining K-drama It’s Okay to Not be Okay‘s premiere yesterday.

For those unfamiliar, Woodshock is an A24 title starring Kirsten Dunst as a woman who begins experiencing strange hallucinations after taking a powerful drug. Most of the action revolves around Dunst’s character Theresa taking poison-laced joints that, rather than killing her, put her in an increasingly fragile mental state that turns fantastical. While Woodshock divided critics upon its 2017 release, it looks to be worth checking out.

The other new movie today is Goldie, a Sam de Jong written-and-directed feature starring Slick Woods as the titular character,...

The 7 Best Movies New to Netflix in June 2020
Image
June 2020 is going to be an interesting month on Netflix, as the streaming giant tries to stave off a sudden influx of new competition (led by HBO Max) by offering a deep grab bag of new and licensed content that showcases the company’s unrivaled ability to offer just about anything it wants.

It’s hard to scoff at a slate of Netflix Originals that includes new films from both Spike Lee and Olivier Assayas (“Wasp Network”), especially when those films are served up alongside other contemporary finds like Sam de Jong’s “Goldie,” which had not found proper American distribution until Netflix picked it up.

Meanwhile, a small clutch of absolute classics are joined by some more contemporary comfort food, and an A24 treasure that splits the difference between the two (“Lady Bird”). Here are the seven best movies new to stream on Netflix in June 2020.

Andrea Barber, Candace Cameron Bure, and Jodie Sweetin in Madres forzosas (2016)
New on Netflix: June 2020 Releases
Andrea Barber, Candace Cameron Bure, and Jodie Sweetin in Madres forzosas (2016)
As the summer begins to roll in it’s a time of endings for Netflix. No, Netflix isn’t going anywhere anytime soon obviously. The streamer continues to claim that its set up to churn out content through the rest of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic freeze on TV and movie production. Netflix’s new releases for June 2020, however, are highlighted by a couple of high profile finales.

13 Reasons Why premieres its fourth and final season on June 5. Before that, Fuller House is set to bow on June 2…though that franchise has been through the finale experience before so we’ll see about that. The Netflix original shows that are (presumably) in the middle of their run this month include Queer Eye (June 5), F is for Family, and The Politician (June 19).

June also will mark the arrival for a couple of high profile Netflix original film projects. Spike Lee’s latest,...

This Week In Trailers: Beanpole, Inside the Rain, Goldie, Most Likely to Succeed, Mike Birbiglia: The New One
Viktoria Miroshnichenko in Una gran mujer (Beanpole) (2019)
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

Film Movement has unveiled a trailer for indie drama Goldie, which first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and also played at the Movies That Matter Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. Made by Dutch filmmaker Sam de Jong, the film stars Slick Woods as the titular character. Goldie, a precocious teenager in a family shelter, wages war against the system to keep her sisters together while she pursues her dreams of being a dancer. This is a story about displaced youth, ambition, and maintaining your spirit in the face of insurmountable obstacles. Also with George Sample III, Danny Hoch, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Jazmyn C Dorsey, Khris Davis, Edwina Findley Dickerson, and Alanna Renee Tyler-Tompkins. Described as "raw and glamorous, unflinchingly realistic and relentlessly optimistic, with a ton of heart and at least as much attitude." Enjoy.

‘Goldie’ Review: Model Slick Woods Makes a Dynamite Debut in a Scrappy and Stylish New York Drama [Tribeca]
Goldie writer/director Sam de Jong comes from the world of music videos, and fittingly, the music video is both the driving narrative and visual inspiration of his debut feature film. But this is not some fairy-tale vision of New York: de Jong’s grainy, sun-kissed ode to the city of hustlers highlights the gritty, unforgiving world […]

Memo to Distributors: Buy These Berlinale 2019 Movies
Nadav Lapid
While the Berlinale is simply too big for anyone to know if this 2019 was a “good” or “bad” year for the annual über-festival, this edition was highlighted by several of the best and most exciting films that have premiered in Potsdamer Platz in recent memory. The Competition section boasted a career-best offering from Nadav Lapid, a career-topping retrospective from Agnès Varda, and a career-redefining journalistic drama from François Ozon. But the cream of the crop wasn’t contained to a single portion of the lineup, as the Panorama and Forum sections also played host to a handful of films that will continue to make waves on the festival circuit for the rest of the year. As is often the case at the Berlinale, many of the standout films were still without American distribution by the time the festival came to an end. From the masterful Golden Bear winner to a...

Slick Woods at an event for Goldie (2019)
Slick Woods, Rihanna’s Muse, on Appearing in ‘Goldie,’ Her Debut as a Movie Actress (Exclusive)
Slick Woods at an event for Goldie (2019)
Slick Woods, Rihanna’s favorite fashion model, makes her feature film debut as the lead actress in Sam de Jong’s “Goldie,” which world premiered Sunday in Berlin’s Generation 14plus section. She found filming 21 days straight “hard work” and a “crazy experience,” but enjoyed it, although she did have to sacrifice her 21st birthday, she tells Variety.

“The work hours were long, but I was blessed with a role that was very similar to myself, so it wasn’t much like work at all,” she says, speaking on the phone from New York, where she is much in demand during the city’s Fashion Week and was unable to attend the film’s Berlin premiere. “I don’t even feel like I was really acting. It was more like playing out scenes in my life that I didn’t necessary want to touch on over again, so it was kind of like therapy.
