'Bijltjesdag' is a Dutch expression, which roughly translates to 'day of reckoning'. It has come to mean a day at the end of a period of oppression or great tension. Although its roots stem from the 1700s, it became used more recently to describe the days after Holland's liberation from Nazi Germany, when Dutch Resistance and Citizens sought out Nazi sympathisers and collaborators abandoned by the retreating German Army.
Originally, the story was about a British Veteran of WWII, called Edgar, but was adapted to be set in Holland.
The Director and Writer met for the first time at the film's second festival screening in Amsterdam. All previous collaboration had been conducted via Skype and Facebook Messenger, as they live in Holland and England, respectively.
