Rag Doll

This innocent-looking short tells a powerful factual story of life under the most brutal regime in human history--still ruling after over 70 years proving that money is more important than human life even to democratic nations as they try to balance continuing business ties while fighting the pandemic.

I don't think it's coincidental that the teacher resembles Carrie Lam, who basically threw Hong Kongers out into the street for her Beijing bosses.

A little girl. Each happy moment of her life is covered by a storm. She remains alone , the fear of others isolate her. The only companion - a doll , last gift from her mother behind lost her.

A film like a bitter fairy tale about orphanage, joy of others, a little mouse in snow and a snow cake, paintings , a job and a work place In same measure, a short animation about...magic.

The end reveils the heart of this modern fairy tale. Not exactly a revelation, not surprising. It can be North Coreea or China or each totalitarian regime ruining childhood.

But what real matters is the last scene.

It is the key. And the frame of happy discover of magic.

Great little stop motion short. Very artistic and nicely done - reminds me a lot of Coraline when it comes to the stop motion, which is a good thing and also isn't surprising as apparently it had some of the same stop motion people. Only that as opposed to being a big budget motion picture, this is more of a labor of love - the kinda thing a stop motion artist does in his spare time cause the subject matter is too sensitive for Hollywood.

T wasn't sure what this film was about until I followed the link to the story behind it. It is heartbreaking, the story of how China treats it's people who they believe are not obedient to the state. The followers of Falun Dafa, dissidents etc. This is a moving account of the human rights abuses facing so many innocent people. The part at the end is incredible. This is a short film that needs to be seen by everyone. It is a story of hardship, courage and the refusal to be broken by a cruel system. The actors at the end of the film are wonderful and really shows the spirit of humanity in the face of oppression.

There should be more films like this to brig these evils to light.

After watching the film, I already felt quite sad for the little girl so I did not expect to get my heart shattered even more when reading further into the story behind it. If you are reading this, I encourage you to read more into those actual stories that inspired this film, which can be found under the description section of whatever media platform that you can watch this film on.

The film uses a creative way to convey the terrible human right abuses in China in a light-hearted manner- the art of oil painting. There are many symbolisms being used- all of which can only be uncovered through learning the actual stories as mentioned above. It is ridiculous that the world has let China committed such atrocity for so long. Even to this day, there are many children that face similar situation to the one being conveyed in this film. I hope that justice will be restored in China soon.
