Sons Of Anarchy: What Does Samcro Stand For?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Though it may not get as much credit as shows like "The Sopranos" or "Breaking Bad" as far as the golden age of television goes, "Sons of Anarchy" certainly had its part to play in this prolific era for small screen entertainment. Hailing from the mind of Kurt Sutter, of "The Shield" fame, the series premiered on FX in 2008, running for seven seasons and 92 episodes, growing its audience along the way in addition to being nominated for five Emmys.

The show centers on Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) who discovers a manifesto written by his late father and founder of the motorcycle club Samcro. This leads Jax to question just about everything in his life, laying the foundation for the seven seasons of TV that followed.

At the center of it all was the motorcycle club Samcro. That and all of the crime,...

Image
“The Westies” has added two new series regulars to its cast with production now underway.

Variety has learned that Stanley Morgan and Sarah Bolger have both joined the MGM+ crime drama, which was ordered to series back in March. They join previously announced cast members J.K. Simmons, Tom Brittney, Titus Welliver, and Jessica Frances Dukes.

The show is based on the true story of the titular New York City gang of the same name. The official description of the series states:

“The series is set in the early 1980s when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center on the Westies’ home turf in Hell’s Kitchen promises a financial windfall. Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente. But internal conflict between the brash younger...

Why HBO Passed On Sons Of Anarchy
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If you asked which brand reigns supreme in prestige television, most would say HBO. "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" are highs that television dramas have been chasing for the last two decades. HBO's judgment is not unassailable, though. The network has turned down several shows that went on to be huge successes elsewhere. One of the shows HBO rejected was "Breaking Bad," which is generally ranked alongside "Sopranos" and "The Wire" as the third node in the "television masterpiece" triptych.

Another was the series that became "Sons of Anarchy." Created by Kurt Sutter, the series is basically "Hamlet" retold with the Hells Angels. Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam) is a member of the Sons of Anarchy, a motorcycle club in northern California that makes its money running guns. The club was founded by Jax's late father, John, but these...

The Sons of Anarchy Revival Already Has the Perfect Villain (Especially if Jax Teller's Son Is the Main Character)
Image
There is perhaps no greater show from the "Golden Age" of cinematic television that weaves thematic parallels and compelling character arcs together like Sons of Anarchydoes. Immediately, Sons of Anarchy portrays a specific kind of family drama revolving around friendships and legacy that always gives the criminal aspect a unique kind of glorification. Experienced through protagonist Jax Teller's perspective, audiences become invested in the story of Samcro and their purpose as a California Biker Club. Biker clubs have always existed with admirable qualities such as honor, loyalty and commitment that aren't always present in other kinds of social groups. Of course, as biker clubs evolved into biker gangs, the organized crime element that began to overshadow the groups, made it harder for them to exist passively in the country. However, through cinematic storytelling, bikers get a specific kind of depiction that makes audiences understand them better.

Part of understanding bikers...

Friday Night Lights, Scrubs, and more shows being rebooted that don't need reboots
Image
Over the past decade or so, reboots and revivals have become a major source of contention among consumers. More and more networks and streamers began rolling out updated iterations of past favorites, whether it was Netflix getting the Tanner family back together for Fuller House or The CW reimagining 1980s primetime soap Dynasty through a modern lens.

While the craze has slowed down ever so slightly, there have still been plenty of returns, like sitcom revivals Will & Grace, Frasier, Roseanne, Night Court, and Mad About You, drama reboots like Charmed, Bel-Air, Gossip Girl, and Magnum P.I.

Whether we like it or not, the reboot and revival train will continue to move full steam ahead. There's already a handful of beloved shows set for some sort of return,...

New ‘Prison Break’ Series Scores Pilot Order at Hulu From Elgin James
Michael Rapaport, Muse Watson, Stacy Keach, Paul Adelstein, Barbara Eve Harris, Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Leon Russom, Wade Williams, Amaury Nolasco, and Marshall Allman in Prison Break (2005)
The new “Prison Break” series is slowly becoming a reality.

Hulu has ordered a pilot for the “Prison Break” follow-on series, with “Mayans M.C.” co-creator Elgin James attached to write, TheWrap has learned. The new series hails from 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios.

The new “Prison Break” series is being considered a next chapter for the thriller show and is expected to feature a fresh cast of characters attempting a daring jailbreak. James will executive produce alongside “Prison Break” creator Paul Scheuring as well as “Prison Break” EPs Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz.

The pilot order comes just over a month after the “Prison Break” series was reported to be in the works at 20th Television, which produced the first run of the show that originally premiered in 2005.

Created by Scheuring, the original series centered on structural engineer Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), who devises...

Prison Break Reboot From Mayans M.C. Boss Receives Pilot Order at Hulu
Image
Just when we thought the Prison Break franchise was over, it sounds like we’re getting another series.

Deadline reported around this time last year that Hulu had put a “new incarnation” of the hit drama into development. Today, they reported that it has officially received a pilot order.

Prison Break first aired on Fox in 2005 before being canceled in 2009 after four seasons.

(Ed Araquel/Fox)

However, Fox aired a limited series revival in 2017, bringing back the show’s key players, including Wentworth Miller, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Dominic Purcell.

The next chapter will be an entirely new concept but will still take place in the universe of the original series.

That’s probably an excellent idea, given how Prison Break Season 5 ended.

If you’re a Prison Break fan, you were likely upset by the end of the show’s original run, which...

Mayans M.C. Co-Creator's Prison Break Reboot Gets an Exciting Update
Image
Hulu's preparing to spend some time behind the walls with a planned reboot of the hit series Prison Break. A new take on the show, this one from Elgin James, has just taken a major step forward toward becoming a reality.

Per Deadline, Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for the Prison Break reboot. Should the streamer be satisfied with the pilot, a series order will be next. The project comes from James, known for co-creating FX's Sons of Anarchy spinoff series, Mayans M.C., as well as the BBC/Prime Video series The Outlaws. The potential spinoff with James was first reported to be in early development last year, and finally getting its pilot order follows the original Prison Break recently getting a resurgence in viewership on Netflix after a 2-year hiatus on that platform.

Thanks To Mayans Mc, This Sons Of Anarchy Character Appeared In More Episodes Than Jax Teller
Image
The world of Sons of Anarchy expanded with the spinoff TV series Mayans M.C., and thanks to it, one Sons of Anarchy character appeared in more episodes than Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Although Sons of Anarchy gave closure to its main characters and left a more optimistic future for the title motorcycle club, there were still more stories from this world to be explored. The spinoff series Mayans M.C. changed the setting to the fictional border town of Santo Padre to follow the title Mc, but some characters from Sons of Anarchy have made appearances in it.

Sons of Anarchy told the story of Jax Teller, who went from being the clubs VP to its President, though not exactly one whose reign benefited the club. Jaxs issues with other clubs, as well as his family problems, led to his death at the end of Sons of Anarchy, leaving SAMCROs presidency...

Sons of Anarchy's Weirdest Character Returned 7 Years Later (& Was Even Worse)
Image
Throughout seven seasons, Sons of Anarchy had a variety of villains with different reasons to destroy Samcro, but its weirdest one returned seven years later in the spinoff series Mayans M.C., and he was even worse. Sons of Anarchy arrived in 2008 to take the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, to meet the title motorcycle club, led by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jackson Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Sons of Anarchy focused on Jaxs efforts to bring his late fathers vision for the club to life, but he ended up having to change this plan.

Jax also wanted to keep the club afloat while also dealing with a lot of family trauma, which led him to make some questionable decisions throughout Sons of Anarchy. Jax and Samcro earned many enemies over the years, going from the leaders of other gangs and clubs to Atf agents and more.

When Mayans Mc Takes Place in the Sons of Anarchy Timeline
Image
Season 7 of Sons of Anarchy wraps up the bikers' story in a tragically haunting way. For a while, it seemed that the dust had settled, but a few years later, creator Kurt Sutter, who also played Otto in the series, decided that he was not quite done with the motorcycle world just yet. A spin-off series that focused on the Mayans motorcycle club titled Mayans M.C. was born.

The Mayans motorcycle club has been a part of the Sons of Anarchy universe since day one, being the one that stole guns from Samcro's weapon storage and burned down the warehouse at the beginning of Season 1. Throughout the series, the motorcycle club has been part of the story, but their rivalry with Samcro has slowly transformed into an alliance. With the motorcycle club's deep roots in the Sons of Anarchy world, where the spin-off show takes place might come as a surprise to many.

Anchor Bay Picks Up Comedy ‘Sour Party’ (Exclusive)
Image
Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired the global rights for the comedy “Sour Party,” co-written, directed, and produced by the married duo Amanda and Michael Drexton. “This love-hate letter to Los Angeles is a semi-autobiographical ode to the worst parts of ourselves as told by two self-obsessed, flailing 30-somethings,” said the Drextons.

The film stars Samantha Westervelt, another co-writer of the film, alongside “Pitch Perfect 2” alum Reggie Watts, “Stand By Me” cast member Corey Feldman, and Augie Duke from “Mayans M.C.” The film revolves around two broke women, Gwen (Westervelt) and James (Amanda) in their thirties who embark on a mission to collect money from failing, wannabe artists with the hopes of raising enough to buy an expensive gift for a baby shower thrown for Gwen’s sister. “It is a feminist take on the traditional, male-dominated buddy comedy,” said the Drextons.

“When we first saw ‘Sour Party,’ we were floored by its fresh perspective,...

Why Sons of Anarchy Creator Kurt Sutter Was Fired From Mayans Mc
Image
Following Sons of Anarchy's success, FX moved forward with a spin-off show, Mayans M.C. The show follows the Mayans bikers club in California and features some crossover between the Mayans and Samcro. It seemed like an obvious choice for Kurt Sutter to helm the ship. Although Season 1 went smoothly, problems started to emerge during the second season.

Kurt Sutter was fired in 2019 while working on the second season of Mayans M.C. His co-showrunner, Elgin James, then took full creative control in Season 3. Sutter's departure resulted in a noticeable shift in tone and storytelling, for the better and worse. After five seasons, Disney canceled the show.

Disney Fired Kurt Sutter Due to Complaints

After Sutter was fired as executive producer for Mayans M.C., he sent a letter to his inside circle. The letter detailed the backstory behind his dismissal from the show, told from Sutter's perspective in 2019. Disney acquired 20th Century Fox,...

Soa Creator Departs His New Netflix Show Mid-Filming, Report Details Creative Struggle With Execs
Image
Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has exited his new Netflix western series The Abandons. Starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, the series was also set to serve as a reunion for Sutter with his previous Sons of Anarchy castmates Michael Ornstein and Ryan Hurst. The Abandons was set to be Sutters first major television project after he was fired from the Sons of Anarchy spinoff series Mayans M.C. in 2019, serving as its creator, showrunner, and executive producer.

As originally reported by Deadline, Sutter has exited work on The Abandons with three weeks left before production was scheduled to wrap. While Netflix and Sutter's reps have declined to comment, sources suggest the change came as the result of creative differences that arose after the streamer had viewed rough cuts of the first few episodes.

Friction reportedly began when an early cut of the first episode ran an hour and 40 minutes long,...

Kurt Sutter's Netflix series The Abandons already mired in mess before releasing
Image
If you are looking forward to Kurt Sutter's upcoming Netflix original Western drama series The Abandons, the latest update on the series probably isn't what you want to hear. Sutter has officially stepped down as executive producer and showrunner on the series mere weeks before the first season was set to wrap filming. No one saw that coming!

According to a report from Deadline, the reason behind Sutter's sudden departure from The Abandons has to do with "creative differences" regarding the direction of the series. As the outlet explains, Netflix wasn't on board with a cut of the seven-episode series' first episode, which clocked in with a 100-minute runtime.

Following the discovery of the movie-length pilot episode, the plan moving forward was to split the first episode into two episodes. That called for the creation of a newly written cliffhanger and additional scenes to allow both episodes to stand on their own.

Kurt Sutter Exits Netflix Epic Western Series ‘The Abandons’ Just Before Production Wraps
Image
Kurt Sutter has departed his upcoming Netflix Western series “The Abandons” just weeks before production on the series is scheduled to end, Variety has confirmed with sources.

“The Abandons” went into production in Calgary, Alberta, Canada back in May and is scheduled to wrap in mid-October. Sutter created the series and also served as executive producer and showrunner. It was originally ordered to series at Netflix in October 2022 and was first reported to be in development at the streaming giant back in November 2021.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment, but sources say that Sutter’s exit from the show came over creative differences after Netflix saw a rough cut of the first episodes. Reportedly, the first episode was so long that the plan was to split it into two, necessitating the shooting of additional scenes. With Netflix and the TV industry as a whole looking to tighten up budgets, “The Abandons...

James Wan’s Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot finds its writer
Image
Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad… but last month, it was reported that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.” Now, Deadline has learned that this Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot will be written by Sean Tretta.

Wan is expected to direct the film and will be producing,...

Nobody 2: John Ortiz joins Bob Odenkirk in the action sequel
Image
THR reports that John Ortiz, best known for his roles in Fast & Furious, American Gangster, Kong: Skull Island, Mayans Mc, and many others, has joined the cast of Nobody 2, which is currently in production in Winnipeg.

The sequel will see Bob Odenkirk return as Hutch Mansell, the mild-manner family man who keeps his past as a government assassin under wraps. Connie Nielsen is also returning as Hutch’s wife, Becca, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s father, a retired FBI agent. It was announced earlier this year that Sharon Stone would be playing the main villain of the sequel. Colin Hanks is also onboard as a “corrupt sheriff with none-too-nice ambitions.” It’s not yet known who John Ortiz will play in Nobody 2, but I always love seeing him pop up in projects.

Soa Spinoff Mayans M.C. Cancellation, Explained
Image
Quick Links What Is the Story of Mayans M.C.? Kurt Sutter Was Fired as Co-Showrunner How Did Sutter's Dismissal Affect Myans M.C.? The Network Ended Mayans M.C. With Season 5

The hit FX drama, Sons of Anarchy was critically praised for the storytelling and development of its characters that made it such a hit with TV viewers. After the show ended with Season 7, the spin-off series, Mayans M.C. was picked up almost two years later with high hopes of making a similar impact. Mayans revolves around a new set of protagonists from the titular Mayans Motorcycle Club and has very little to do with Samcro. Despite its new focus, however, the show initially still captured the same spirit as the original show and kept in touch with many of the same themes.

Even though it wasn't as highly regarded as Sons of Anarchy was, the show still did well for FX.

Disney Fined $36,000 in Death of ‘Wonder Man’ Crew Member
Image
Disney has been fined $36,000 in the February death of a crew member working on the Marvel series “Wonder Man.”

A Cal/Osha investigation determined that the wooden catwalk which 41-year-old lighting technician J.C. “Spike” Osorio fell from was “deteriorated” and gave way “suddenly and without warning.”

The fatal accident occurred on Feb. 6 at Stage 3 at the Radford Studio Center in Studio City.

“The deteriorated ledger was weakened likely due to age, environmental conditions and repeated stress loads over many decades,” according to a statement issued by the agency, which levied two penalties of $18,000 each against Marvel parent company Disney.

They concluded that Osorio was standing on the weakened section of the catwalk, when “suddenly and without warning, the ledger supporting the floorboard broke apart and collapsed…. The employee fell 41 feet and forcefully impacted the ground below.”

Cal/Osha also issued two $22,5000 citations to the nearly 100-year-old Radford Studio Center.

FX is probably best known, over the past several years, for being a network with a ton of great dramas. Recent hits include “Shogun,” “The Old Man,” and “Mayans M.C.” There just aren’t a ton of comedies (outside of “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Reservation Dogs“) on the network. But that changes now, with the addition of “English Teacher.”

The Fan-Favorite Sons Of Anarchy Character Played By A Real Hells Angel Had A Disappointing Fate
Image
Happy Lowman, a character played by real-life Hells Angel, met a disappointing end in Mayans M.C. Happy Lowman was a loyal and ruthless member of Samcro with a dark past and a trademark smiley face tattoo tradition. Happy's unfortunate demise in Mayans M.C. was forced and poorly written, failing to honor his character.

Sons of Anarchy counted on the help and presence of real-life members of the Hells Angels, and one of them ended up becoming a fan-favorite character but he got a very disappointing fate. Back in 2008, Kurt Sutter brought the action crime drama TV series Sons of Anarchy, which took the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, to meet the title motorcycle club. Sons of Anarchy was a success with critics and viewers and ran for a total of seven seasons, through which it chronicled the rise and fall of Jackson Jax Teller, VP and...

The show was rightfully critically praised for its storytelling and the development of its characters, but those are also the reasons why it became such a hit with TV viewers.
