Sara Bareilles’ First Orchestral Concert at Hollywood Bowl Features Ravishing Treatments of Broadway Hits, Feminist Anthems and New Material: Concert Review
Image
Whatever counts as Sara Bareilles’ day job right now, it’s not regualrly releasing albums and touring. Her last studio album (2019’s “Amidst the Chaos”) and tour are both five years in the rear-view mirror at this point. That might seem laggardly for anyone else who started out with a career like hers, Bareilles has managed to seem like the busiest woman in — or flitting in and out of — pop. As her recording career reaches the two-decade mark this year, almost all of her standard album releases came in the first half of those years, with the last 10 years finding her triumphing on Broadway as a composer (“Waitress”) and star, and successfully moving into TV as a creator (“Little Voice”) and star.

If you’re a fan, you can be a little bit jealous of how these projects have taken time away from her output as a pure singer-songwriter… and...

Musical Adaptation Of Bestseller ‘The Interestings’ In Works With ‘Waitress’ Composer Sara Bareilles And Playwright Sarah Ruhl
Image
Waitress composer Sara Bareilles and Pulitzer finalist playwright Sarah Ruhl are teaming up on a stage musical adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s bestselling 2013 novel The Interestings.

Bareilles is composing the music and lyrics, while Ruhl writes the book. Matt Ross is producing.

Wolitzer’s novel, as the official synopsis states, tells the story of six teenagers who meet at summer camp in the 1970s and form a lifelong bond over their shared dream of leading creative and inspiring lives. Decades later in New York City, that bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. The Interestings traces their lives as they grow together and apart to explore friendship, love, envy, class, art, money, and power; and how all of it can shift and tilt precipitously over the course of a friendship and a life.

“I wrote the first song for The Interestings before I even finished the book,...

Nicole Kidman at an event for The Oscars (2017)
Nicole Kidman, Amazon Studios Nab Meg Wolitzer Novel ‘The Female Persuasion’ (Exclusive)
Nicole Kidman at an event for The Oscars (2017)
Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to “The Female Persuasion,” an acclaimed best-seller by Meg Wolitzer.

The movie will be produced by Lynda Obst (“Contact”), Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, and Per Saari (“Big Little Lies”). Blossom Films, Kidman’s production company, recently signed a first-look deal with Amazon — this film will be a part of that pact.

“The Female Persuasion” centers on Greer Kadetsky, a college student who is groped at a fraternity party and becomes emboldened to speak up for women’s rights. But her assailant turns out to be a serial abuser and her university fails to take action. In addition to Greer, Wolitzer’s book follows several other characters, including Zee, a fellow student with an activist streak, and Faith Frank, a feminist icon. Reviews for the book were sterling, with The Guardian praising it as “warm and witty, and necessary.”

The book is being adapted and...

Lauren Ambrose in The Interestings (2016)
Amazon 2016 Pilots: ‘The Interestings’ and ‘The Last Tycoon,’ Reviewed
Lauren Ambrose in The Interestings (2016)
“The Last Tycoon”

In the year 2016, it’s no secret that as glamorous as old Hollywood seemed on the surface, the truth was far less wholesome. With that in mind, “The Last Tycoon,” written and directed by Billy Ray (the under-appreciated talent behind such films as “Shattered Glass,” adapting a famously unfinished roman a clef by F. Scott Fitzgerald) might seem a bit rote, but it’s got an awful lot going for it.

Matt Bomer stars as Monroe Stahr, the idealistic production head of a motion picture studio who’s at odds with studio boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) while trying to get his dream picture made in the political and social climate of the 1930s. (Why yes, the subject of what’s happening in Germany does come up.) Monroe, we learn right away, is mourning the loss of his movie star wife even as he bounds around the studio,...

8 New Series Coming to Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime customers will once again have a hand in deciding which of Amazon Video’s 2016 pilots get signed to full series. The streaming service’s new pilot season will debut two new hour-long dramas (“The Last Tycoon” and “The Interestings”) and six children’s programs, including the live-action “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters,” on June 17. Audiences are then invited to review the series and help decide which shows we’ll be seeing more of later this year—a focus group-like process that has helped sustain such award-winning shows as “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” “We’re focused on bringing customers compelling, must-see TV and we accomplish this by going directly to them for input,” Digital Video and Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price said in a statement. “Their feedback has helped create series that have become fan favorites among critics and customers.” So get ready for the latest from Matt Bomer,...

Amazon’s Next Pilot Season To Include Adaptations Of ‘The Interestings,’ ‘The Last Tycoon’
As its existing original programs continue to draw viewers, accolades, and awards, Amazon is looking to add additional series to its library. Its next round of competing pilots will include adaptations of Meg Wolitzer’s acclaimed novel The Interestings and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished work The Last Tycoon, as well as six children’s programs.

The cast of Amazon’s adaptation of The Interestings will include Lauren Ambrose and David Krumholtz, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell helming the pilot. The project, based off Wolitzer’s 2013 book, will chronicles several decades in the life of a group of summer camp friends.

The Last Tycoon, which was published as an unfinished rough draft after Fitzgerald’s 1940 death, will feature its own crop of familiar faces, including Kelsey Grammer, who will portray one of the principal characters. The pilot will be Amazon’s second foray into the world of Fitzgerald.
