Shiv Panditt and Dhruv Ganesh in Loev (2015)

Ambitious, modern, and a little bewildering

I had to come to Imdb to understand exactly what I watched. I saw three people in relationships but could not quite get a grasp of exactly who meant what to whom.

Now, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Often ambiguity adds another layer of meaning to a film. And I think that was the intent of thIs film. In this case, the relationship of the two friends-one in Mumbai an a short visit from New York-had a lot of backstory that we keep thinking is going to be revealed. We get fragments of information about each character, but they're random and incidental. There is nothing particularly defining about their status or in fact the purpose of their visit. We're given explanations of sorts, but they seem inadequate given the scope of the story we're being told.

I have mixed feelings about this film. The relationships of men who love one another feel modern and authentic. Motivation for the behavior of the characters is less clear, and that lack of clarity leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. I'm okay with filling in the blanks in films like this because sometimes what is unsaid can be more powerful than spelling things out precisely. In this case, I think we needed just a bit more.

Other reviews raise red flags over the sexual violence in the film. They seem to object to its inclusion, as if by depicting it, and the characters' reaction to it, social responsibility has been breached. I think that's naive. This kind of thing happens, and some people react to it the same way the characters do here. We don't like it, we don't like seeing it, but trying to wish it away doesn't help anybody. It is a major plot point and omitting it would have left even bigger holes in the story.

I don't regret watching this film, but I don't think I would recommend it. There are other gay themed films out there that cover this territory much better. However, if you're Indian and eager to see something modern about gay life set in India, you may we'll find it compelling.

Amateurish but could have been better

I was really curious about this movies but it didn't meet my expectations at all. The problem is that everything, except for the surprisingly good actors, is a problem. The pacing is all wrong, the plot doesn't really go anywhere and there are some sensitive issues that were handled frankly quite poorly.

decent, but could have been amazing

This is a case where the film's format and style do not quite match the complications of its narrative. It could either have been this immersive, intimate portrait of two people never quite getting on the same boat, all while having this roadtrip... but it was bogged down by messier elements. Sudhansu Saria made a decent debut though, and actors Dhruv Ganesh, Shiv Pandit and Siddharth Menon were fantastic and magnetic on screen.

Sidenote: I am very devastated to learn about Dhruv

An original movie

An original movie. It takes through a viewpoint of another country. There's some quite stunning scenery which makes you want to travel. The relationship between the characters feels a bit weak and having watched to the end, leave you hope that there was more to it. A controversial moment is batted away when that could have been something they could flesh out.

powerful film

As a gay man living in NYC (not Indian) - I was blown away by this beautiful and powerful film. While one might think this is a simple love/struggle story - it is not. I travel to India twice a year for work. I have been to the country 14 times. Indian culture views homosexuality a crime -- making this story even more powerful. It was also great to see some of the beautiful Indian country side. Do not miss this film.

BORING!

This film is soooo dull! If it was an episode of a much larger series, it would still be too long and too slow, but it might work better.

I want to know how the relationship started, what lead to it reaching this stage and what are the issues with Alex, among other things?

There was no real point to the film, it didn't go anywhere or come from anywhere. I should have trusted my instincts and turned it off after 10 minutes.

Beautifully crafted and honest movie...

I was looking for this movie everywhere. Finally i got it on Netflix and man what a movie this is. This movie is totally honest to the plot and scenario and it never uses typical stereotypes and clichés regarding homosexuality which is the most refreshing thing about this movie. You really connect with the characters as this is like a piece of life. Throughout the entire movie you will sense both acceptance and denial of the situation which makes it more lifelike. You really sympathize with each of the characters. In the end when you come to know about Dhruv in real life, you are bound to get devastated and feel that ache in your heart. I have never given review to any film regarding homosexuality as i had never thought this kind of honest movie will ever be made. I can seriously watch this movie to the end of the time. Special thanks to the whole crew for this. Please watch this movie to understand how complex human emotions can be.

LETS TALK ABOUT THAT R*PE SCENE

THIS MOVIE HAD A R*PE SCENE AND FRAMED IT AS A ROMANTIC ONE!!!!!! HOW IS THIS SUPPOSED TO HELP LGBTQ RIGHTS?!?!?

So I will write here what happened in the hope that I will prevent someone else from watching it.

WARNING: I'm about to describe a s*xual assault scene!!!!!!!!!

This is how the scene played out: Character A kisses Character B. Character B tells Character A REPEATEDLY TO STOP. Character A forces himself on Character B and has s*x with him WHILE CHARACTER B CRIES AND GIVES OUT CLEAR SHINES THAT HE IS PHYSICALLY HURT BY WHAT IS HAPPENING. After all that character B is deeply distressed and Character B says that he's sorry. And the next morning somehow everything is fine ?!?!?!??!

That's when I stopped watching the movie because even I felt violated by this whole incident.

HOW ALL THESE 10 STAR REVIEWS MISSED THAT ?!?!? IT SHOULD BE COMMON SENSE THAT R*PE IS NOT ROMANTIC!!!!!!

awful, pointless

I was hoping to see a love story, but there no love at all. The comments are clearly false. The whole thing was pointless and makes you so distressing. There's no message, at least not a good one. The characters are so annoying and childish. Poor acting, lack of a background story and besides all that, an awful rape scene.

Honest and beautiful film

I recently watched Loev, and it was a very compelling experience. You get the feeling that you have watched something heartfelt, honest and complex. The film is visually stunning and has great performances by all the cast. It captures the subtle nuances of friendship, love & longing, while its realistic tone and quirky humor make the film very relatable. A must watch for everyone.

Don't waist your time

This look looks like amateur move, superficially artistic. Even after the end I didn't connect who is who in this story. Seriously there is much more better movies. Don't waist time...

Gorgeous film

This was a beautiful film about love, and the things that look like love but are a little different too. The cinematography is beautiful and the storytelling is rich and unique.

The characters have an emotional depth rarely seen in romantic movies. I found myself simultaneously rooting for them and also hesitantly accepting their flaws. These characters are human in the sense that they are inconsistent and strong and weak and bold and meek like so many humans are. Can't wait to watch it again.

Not up to the mark

I failed to understand why the filmmaker made this movie ? What was his thinking and what he wanted to say ? This movie is boring, slow and a mess. It failed to change the mindset of Indian people towards LGBTQ community. This film shows the immaturity of the filmmaker who spoiled the plot entirely and didn't do justice to a sensitive issue. Actors were good but shame on the filmmaker who spoiled everything.
