El cofre

...and its birth with real simple tools. that is all. a woman. an old chest. a sound. and the end. like others films by David Sandberg, the real admirable thing is the return at origins. to scary in the old style fashion, remembering German fairy tales, using the viewer as part of game, suggesting more than giving. proposing the atmosphere more than the story. and this is the motif for who, the chain of 3 minutes short films of David Sandberg are great refuges for classic horror fans.

The overall concept of this short horror film was great. I especially liked how the coffin was portrayed-not as something ominous at first, but as a typical household item used for decoration or storage, like blankets. Turning it into a portal to hell (or wherever it leads) was a clever and intriguing idea.

However, some other aspects of the film didn't quite live up to the concept. For instance, the woman's decisions after realizing something strange was happening felt unrealistic-far beyond how a normal person would likely react. Additionally, while the ending was fairly predictable, it also wasn't visually very frightening. Instead of delivering a final jolt, it actually dulled the emotional impact for me a bit.

As far as their shorts go this one falls somewhere in the middle. Not the best but definitely still an intriguing concept. A little meh at the end.

'Coffer (2014)' goes on for about five seconds too long, pushing past its perfect ending to finish on a kind of anticlimactic note. Still, it's a confident and competent horror short overall. It does a good job in building suspense and features a convincing central special effect. There's a strong sense of atmosphere and the cinematography is on point, too. It's an effective short film. 6/10.

I think that the space created here was just enough for a better ending. It was rather obvious what we were about to see from the very start, so I would describe it as eerie more than anything.

A little mystery at first, curiosity and very fast fear is installed. The story rushes to show us what it's all about yet it just feels that there was room for better.

All in all, good practice for Sandberg and his future work. His long length projects so far, are quite the step up from the typical horror of today. Looking forward for more.
