Image
MTV has revealed the nominees for the 2025 edition of the Video Music Awards, and Lady Gaga leads the pack with 12 nods, coming in just ahead of her "Die with a Smile" collaborator, Bruno Mars, who netted 11. Both "Die with a Smile" and Mar's collab with Rosé, "Apt.," received noms for Video and Song of the Year, while Gaga's "Abracadabra" cleaned up in technical categories.

The other dominant single was Kendrick Lamar's unstoppable "Not Like Us." The rapper and beef winner snagged 10 nominations in total, including for Artist of the Year and Best Collaborator for "luther" with Sza.

The VMAs, which are set to take place on Sept. 7 on Long Island, also added two new categories, Best Pop Artist and Best Country. (Could this be Iceland's year?) Another competition to watch is Best K-Pop, which will...

Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist Announce Alfredo 2, Share “1995”: Stream
Image
Hope you’re ready for seconds, Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist have announced Alfredo 2, the follow-up to their 2020 cult classic, Alfredo. To whet the appetite, the duo are sharing the new song “1995” along with a short yakuza noir, Alfredo: The Movie.

The new album is set to drop July 25th via Rabbit Vision, Alc Records, and Virgin Music. Pre-orders are ongoing. This’ll be the third major collaboration for Gibbs and Alc, including 2018’s Fetti with Curren$y. “1995” is a spiritual sequel to “1985” from Alfredo, boasting the same easy chemistry that makes the Mc and producer such natural partners. Alchemist’s spaced-out beat is swimming in vibes, starting with twinkling introspection and building to a guitar-fueled frenzy. He keeps the percussion levels low, the better to hear how Gibbs’ whip-crack flows slice and dice from different angles.

Erykah Badu Is Working on a New Album Produced by The Alchemist
Image
Erykah Badu hasn’t released a new album since 2010’s New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), but that could all change soon. In a recent Billboard interview, the neo soul pioneer revealed she is working on her first studio album in 15 years.

Adding to the intrigue, it’s being solely produced by The Alchemist, better known for working with hip-hop artists like Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, and Boldy James.

According to journalist Damien Scott, the currently untitled project is a primary focus in Badu’s life. “The album has been taking up most of her time; she says she can’t wait until she’s done,” Scott wrote.

Elsewhere in the interview, Badu explained why it’s been so long between albums. “I tour eight months out of the year for the past 25 years,” she said. “That’s what I do. I am a performance artist. I am not a recording artist.

Freddie Gibbs Thinks Drake and PartyNextDoor ‘Stole’ His Album Motif
Image
Today, Drake and Partynextdoor released the tracklist for their $ome $exy $ongs 4 U album dropping tonight, and Freddie Gibbs has thoughts — not on the music, but the title and artwork. Social media users noticed that their triple dollar sign usage follows Gibbs’ 2023 $oul $old $eparately album, and their recently released tracklist graphic includes three swooning women rabbits. For several years, Gibbs has been calling himself “the rabbit,” making the rabbit akin to Kanye’s bear mascot, and heavily using the rabbit emoji. There’s also a rabbit on the cover of $oul $old $eparately.

Schoolboy Q
Schoolboy Q Blue Lips Review: Teetering on the Edge of Excess
Schoolboy Q
On Blue Lips, Schoolboy Q’s first album since 2019’s utterly unremarkable Crash Talk, there’s a sense that the Los Angeles rapper is trying to make up for lost time. He exudes an assured confidence throughout that, unlike past releases like 2016’s Black Face LP, makes it feel like he has something to prove. He’s able to whip up an endless amount of versatile and oddball flows, and does so with an equally fresh and flippant demeanor.

Schoolboy delivers each word on “Pop” with a tossed-off precision that’s both laser-focused to fit the track’s rhyme scheme and casual in its cadence. He punctuates the word “pop” with a snickering snarl, accompanied by the sound of a pistol being fired. Later in the track, he lowers his voice to a scruffy register, furiously spitting his words out. The entire song, including a notably batshit Rico Nasty feature,...

Everything That’s Gone Wrong for Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Vultures 1’ Rollout

If there’s one defining feature of seemingly every Kanye West album rollout, it’s gotta be chaos. In the past, it was usually good chaos — oh, how we yearn for the days of first-week sales competitions, Good Friday drops, and music videos projected on buildings. But these days, it’s often grim chaos, and the rollout for Vultures 1, West’s new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, has been another exhibition in the form: delays upon delays, sample issues, diatribes of various kinds, and an alternate album cover based...

There’s been intense speculation about just what’s behind the dearth of hip-hop at the top of the charts this year. What the Deaths of Mac Miller and My Brother Taught Me About Possibility
Image
Five years ago today, the world lost Mac Miller at 26. Five years ago Wednesday, I lost my brother Christian at 21. In 2018, I worked for another outlet, and I learned about Mac passing while checking Slack in an attempt to briefly take my mind off the motorcycle accident that took my brother. But I was just inundated with more death.

At the time I pondered writing about whatever symmetry I could think of to get my mind off things. My brother was a rapper like Mac. They were both way too young.

Chika Announces New Album Samson, Shares “Demigod”: Stream
Image
Alabama rapper Chika has announced her debut full-length, Samson: The album, out July 28th via Warner Records. As a preview, she’s shared the powerful new single “Demigod.” Stream it below.

Though Chika has yet to share full details about Samson: The album, we do know it includes “Requiem For A Dream” — which marked her first new single since 2021 when it dropped in June — and the recent Freddie Gibbs collaboration “Truth Or Dare.” Back in May, she teased that Snoop Dogg will also make an appearance.

On “Demigod,” Chika uses a melodic flow while describing how her well-documented mental health issues can benefit her artistry: “I love when I’m manic/ Try not to panic/ Walls of my head are all quilted and padded/ Words in my brain get translated through static.”

Samson: The album follows Chika’s 2021 EP Once Upon a Time. Before that, she was nominated for...

Nothing Young Thug Says Would Change People’s Opinion About Gunna
Image
Young Thug’s new album Business is Business dropped last week, and, as usual with an A-list rap release, the music isn’t the only thing making headlines. Thug’s third studio album, which debuted at number 2 on the charts, is his first full-length release while incarcerated and awaiting trial on the Ysl Rico case. Some fans have been attentively listening to the project seeking inklings of Thug’s thoughts on the case and his — former? — friend Gunna.

On Business Is Business tack “Jonesboro,” Thug rhymes, “Niggas told, and he was my homie,...

How Discord Became the Most Important Platform in Hip-Hop
Image
The producer Kenny Beats has noticed some strange phenomena at his shows over the past few years. For one, the crowds have gotten noticeably bigger, as have merch sales and streams. But most notably, he says, he’s grown accustomed to members of the audience viewing him more as a friend than a performer. This is thanks to his massively popular Discord server, which hosts approximately 135,000 users and has rooms dedicated to questions about audio engineering and specific production software, as well as general channels dedicated to banter or games.

Image

“Fill that place with Dominican, Cuban, and Mexican flags,” wrote El Alfa on Instagram. “I want my Dominican people mutinous.” In a comment on Rolling Loud’s Instagram, El Alfa said he’ll perform at the festival on Saturday. “Where are all the Latinos!!” he wrote.

Kaytranada and Aminé Drop Joint Album KAYTRAMINÉ: Stream
Image
Producer Kaytranada and Portland rapper Aminé have paired up for a full-length collaborative project, under the portmanteau KAYTRAMINÉ. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.

The album reunites the two artists after nearly a decade of mutual behind-the-scenes support that resulted in three Kaytranada-produced tracks on Aminé’s 2015 mixtape, Calling Brio. The 11-track effort includes features from Pharrell Williams, Freddie Gibbs, Snoop Dogg, and Big Sean.

Lead single “4Eva” features production and a vocal assist from Williams. Watch the music video, directed by frequent Aminé collaborator Jack Begert, below.

“4Eva” was followed by the second preview “Rebuke.” KAYTRAMINÉ arrives after a similar year-plus release gap for both artists. Aminé’s Twopointfive project and Kaytranada’s Intimidated EP dropped within two weeks of each other in November 2021, and the latter’s 2022 single “Twin Flame” with Anderson. Paak has stood as the sole offering from either ever since.

Kaytranada will embark...

Kaytraminé Kaytraminé Review: Slick Summer Beats Set to Lyrical Acrobatics
Kaytranada
On Kaytraminé, their first collaborative album, producer Kaytranada and rapper Aminé create a carefree summer soundtrack. Kaytranada is pictured floating in a pool on the album’s cover, brandishing a smoldering joint with laissez-faire cool that echoes his production style, which is rife with beats that ripple in slow motion and synthesizers that reverberate like fireworks. Alongside Kaytra, Aminé is seen leaning forward, champagne flute in hand, with a mischievous smile, all perfectly mirroring his dynamism as an Mc.

Aminé’s performance on “Rebuke” unfolds with an assured nonchalance, while his flair for infectious hooks is evident on “Eye.” As the album unfurls, his focus shifts seamlessly between past and present, placing his humble beginnings in the context of his success. “I used to sip Jarritos every goddamn day…Now I’m in the Swiss alps sippin’ champagne,” he boasts on “Master P,” a playful flex but also a proud...

Large Professor Is Still Providing ‘Relentless, Ill Boom Bap’ At 51
Image
Legendary rapper-producer Large Professor saw no better way to celebrate his 51st birthday than by doing what he loved — rocking a crowd. On March 22, the day after his birthday, the Queens legend played an hourlong set at New York City’s Starchild Lounge rooftop bar to a crowd of hip-hop heads spanning hip-hop’s 50 years.

His set mostly consisted of classic soul and funk songs containing breakbeats later sampled in classic hip-hop songs, such as Brentford All Stars’ “Greedy G,” sampled by Carlos Bess for Ghostface Killah’s “Cherchez La Ghost.

Freddie Gibbs is Winning The Fight
Image
Every step Freddie Gibbs takes is historic. Few artists can match the kind of career the 40-year-old rapper has charted for himself. He’s gone from a fledgling label signee to an indie darling and major label success in the span of a decade. “I’ve had the most unique career path of any rapper on my level because I slugged it out so many years independently,” Gibbs tells Rolling Stone over a zoom call. “I had to put so much of my own time, effort, and money into it.

Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko Teams With Freddie Gibbs, A-Trak for New Song ‘On God’
Image
Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko has teamed up with Freddie Gibbs and DJ/producer A-Trak for a new song, “On God,” off his upcoming solo debut, Gothic Luxury.

Produced by Jay Versace and Dot Da Genius, “On God” begins with a grandiose flourish but settles into a groove that’s still propulsive, but also subtle and unsettling in its own ways. Meechy Darko and Freddie Gibbs trade sprawling, heavy, and brutally honest verses on the five-minute track, while A-Trak arrives at the end to show off his signature scratching skills.

Along with dropping “On God,...

How a Rising Brooklyn Rapper Created a Free Rap Festival That ‘Makes Sense’
Image
The font size on many music festival lineups has been shrinking lately, as new events, jam-packed with megastars (who sometimes don’t even show up) have cropped up in the time since pandemic restrictions have eased around the world. For fans, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Rappers starting their own festivals, by now, seems like a natural part of the game. Everyone from Tyler the Creator to Drake to Travis Scott to Pharrell have put on some version of a multi-artist music festival, featuring a dizzying slate of acts who,...

King Without a Crown: Ongaro Crafts a Rap Trap in Portrait of Creative Crisis

Fifteen years ago, Jay-Z defiantly declared “Thirty’s the new twenty” in “30 Something,” embracing the cache of maturation, long term success, and the development of his own artistic expressions in a youth obsessed industry and musical genre. Rapper Freddie Gibbs makes his screen debut in Diego Ongaro’s Down with the King as a musical artist trying to maintain a similar sense of relevance while battling creative ennui and the crushing machine of social media defined celebrity. A narrative of awkward transitions in the realm of artistry and adulthood, Gibbs shines in this simmering portrait of a defensive musician unsure of how to continue in the lane of gangsta rap as he retreats into the wilderness to regain his composure.…...
