Annecy Film Festival Presentations Include ‘Frozen 2’ Doc, Lord & Miller, and ‘Chicken Run’ Reunion
Image
Netflix, Disney Sony, Cartoon Network Studios, Dean DeBlois and Aardman are reading presentations at France’s Annecy Film Festival — as 2020’s Annecy, even online, once more proves to be the biggest animation fest in the world and the international event with the largest Hollywood and now global platform presence.

Put together, Annecy’s latest big wave of programming announcement suggests that its move online will mean no world premiere of a potential Hollywood blockbuster – such as, in the past, the “Despicable Me” movie series. With more studio involvement most probably still to be announced, many of the good and great of the English-speaking animation world do look more than willing, however, to roll up their sleeves to update accredited festival viewers on upcoming releases such as, of titles now announced, Netflix’s “Wendell & Wild” and Sony Pictures Animation’s “Connected.”

A Doctor Who Vr Adventure Starring Jodie Whittaker Is In The Works
There might be no twelfth season of the series coming this year, but at least the BBC are treating faithful fans with a little extra Doctor Who that’ll move the franchise into an exciting new medium.

It’s been announced today that the Doctor is about to enter the world of virtual reality in a short animated adventure called Doctor Who: The Runaway. The 12-ish minute long story will allow viewers to hop on board the Tardis and, as the press release puts it, become “the Doctor’s champion.” The Time Lord, who’ll be voiced by the Thirteenth Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker, will “find themselves at the centre of the action facing a deadly threat.”

Jo Pearce, creative director of the BBC’s digital drama team, said the following about this new project in a statement released earlier today:

“Fans will experience the Tardis like never before in this thrilling new interactive story.

Tribeca Film Festival: 5 Titles to Watch for Theater Fans
In late April, theater lovers devote most of their attention to the clutch of Broadway shows rushing to open before the eligibility cutoff for Tony nominations. But this year fans should be keeping an eye on things downtown too: New projects by or about Broadway talent aren’t onstage. They’re at a film festival — the Tribeca Film Festival (running April 18-29), where Terrence McNally, Howard Ashman, Michael Mayer and Stephen Karam are all in the mix.

Every Act of Life (pictured top)

Jeff Kaufman and Marcia Ross’ documentary, making its world premiere at the festival, chronicles the life of McNally, the veteran, out-and-proud playwright and four-time Tony winner behind “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Ragtime,” “Love! Valour! Compassion!” and more. The biopic — which counts Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep and Bryan Cranston among those involved — touches on everything from McNally’s romance with Edward Albee to...
