In 1954, the Writers Guild of America formed to bring screenwriters, TV and radio writers under one union umbrella. A few decades later, the labor group expanded its purview by adding animation primetime writers. In three, five or 10 years, could vertical (i.e., iPhone-sized content) writers, YouTubers and other content creators be next?
That’s the vision presented by multiple candidates for this year’s WGA West board and officers election, who are reacting to reduced TV and film hiring with calls for the union to expand. “We are sitting on a shrinking iceberg and must be willing to look beyond our current employers,” vp Michele Mulroney, who is running unopposed to become the union’s president, wrote in her candidate statement. Incumbent board member Adam Conover devoted nearly all of his statement to an organizing narrative, focusing especially on the creator economy. “Like it or not, this is the future of television,...

YouTube creator Alan Chikin Chow, who has over 100 million subscribers across social media, is partnering with a major brand for his latest series, TheWrap has exclusively learned. “Beauty and the Beat” is a short-form digital series that comes from Chow and Laneige, the Korean skincare brand known for its viral lip products. The partnership marks a major milestone for scripted creators interested in brand partnerships.
Produced by SuperOrdinary Studios, the creator-led entertainment division of global brand accelerator SuperOrdinary, “Beauty and the Beat” is being described as a digital series that is the first of its kind in the United States. Tubi is betting more chips on creators. The Fox-owned ad-supported streamer has tapped Kudzi Chikumbu, TikTok’s former global head of creator marketing, as its VP of Creator Partnerships. In this role, Chikumbu will bring more original stories from creators to Tubi’s more than 100 million monthly active users.
“I’m thrilled to join Tubi at a time when creators are redefining entertainment,” said Chikumbu. “Tubi’s dedication to empowering creators with creative freedom and meaningful incremental audience reach is unmatched, and I’m excited to bring fresh, bold and authentic storytelling to their passionate viewers.”
In his role at TikTok, Chikumbu was instrumental in developing the platform’s global creator ecosystem. He’s been recognized in Fortune’s 40 Under 40, The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen, Variety’s Hollywood’s New Leaders and AdWeek’s Experiential Executive of the Year.
That’s not the only creator-related news the platform announced Thursday.

Who Am I?
My name is Scott Brown, founder and CEO of Second Rodeo, and I have been telling stories on YouTube since it was a dating site. For the past 15 years, I have built my career, serving as a producer, writer and director for some of the biggest names in the industry. I’ve crashed a train with MrBeast, launched The Rock’s YouTube channel, and directed an Emmy-nominated series with Larry King. But through all the stunts, shows, and subscribers, I’ve been waiting for one thing to finally break through online: scripted storytelling.
That moment has arrived.
But let’s take a look at how we got here.
Your Web TV History Lesson
Half of you may not remember Web TV but I certainly do–the halcyon days of 2008. Simpler times. I had just graduated from USC with a degree in screenwriting. Just in time for the writer’s strike that year.

It’s been nearly four months since YouTube announced that it would change the way it counts Shorts views, a shift that inflated view counts on the platform’s TikTok competitor. Though the new view-counting meta is still producing some eye-popping numbers, it feels like the dust is starting to settle.
South Korea’s Kimpro is in first place in the Global Top 50 with more than 2.5 billion weekly views, but that actually represents a step back for a channel that approached three billion weekly views just seven days ago. Meanwhile, five other channels got at least one billion weekly views,...

Social media’s conquest of traditional entertainment hubs could be close to completion. Wpp Media, a division of ad agency giant Wpp, has projected that ad spend on content destinations like YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn will outpace spending on traditional media platforms in 2025.
Wpp Media estimated that so-called “creator-driven platforms” — where big-name influencers attract millions of followers and billions of views — will com haul in more than $325 billion of combined ad spend during the 2025 calendar year. That sum would be just big enough to eclipse spending on TV, audio, print, and film, which Wpp collectively describes as “professional content” hubs.
There are a lot of caveats that go into a prediction like that, but the projected totals are the latest evidence that the creator economy will soon be a bigger moneymaker than studio-driven fare. Creators stand to rake in $185 billion of ad revenue in 2025, Wpp claimed, and that figure could...

In the shadow of the Disney and Warner Bros. studio lots, a section of airplane fuselage has been repurposed inside of an industrial park near the Burbank airport.
The section of plane is now a film set, where the popular video creator Dhar Mann uses it to shoot original scripted fare, all embracing his philosophy of trying to “inspire, uplift, and bring a little more positivity into the world.”
On a brisk April afternoon in Burbank, Mann leads a small caravan of golf carts across his campus, which now totals three buildings and more than 100,000 square feet, with multiple sets for schools, restaurants, a shopping mall, a city street, a courthouse, jail and “rich” and “poor” homes. At any given moment some eight videos are shooting, keeping his staff of nearly 200 busy.

Back in early YouTube days, the concept of becoming a full-time content creator seemed ludicrous–and because of that, there was little logistical and operations support for people who wanted to make content their careers. We’ve come a long way since then; now, there’s an entire industry dedicated to supporting creators and their video-making processes, from editors-for-hire to community managers to talent agents, lawyers, tax preparers, and more.
One thing we largely still lack, though, is dedicated coworking spaces. We had it for a while with YouTube Spaces, the initiative where YouTube offered brick-and-mortar production and post-production rooms, video equipment rental, networking events, and educational workshops to content creators around the world. But those closed in 2021, and since then, it’s been up to a handful of companies and individual content creators to build a network of places for creators to both work and socialize.

Can a 28-year-old Texas native with more than 88 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel become the next big thing in K-pop? Alan Chikin Chow is giving it a shot.
Chow, who has gained nearly 50 billion YouTube views through a mix of short-form skits, long-form compilations, and serialized dramas, has inked a deal with Hybe Labels. The company that incubated K-pop hitmakers BTS will join forces with Chow’s Alan’s Universe brand for a star search that will result in the creation of a new U.S.-based act.
According to Variety, Chow himself will co-star in the co-ed act, which will include six members total. The group will be the first project launched under the Hybe America X Au banner, and its story will be told through a mix of music videos and scripted content.
The collaboration unites two entities with expert-level understanding of YouTube and its promotional capabilities for artists.

Neal Mohan is crowning YouTube the king of TV.
In his 2025 letter to creators, the CEO of the internet’s biggest video site pointed out that this year will bring YouTube’s 20th anniversary. And a lot has happened in those two decades–including a major push from YouTube to challenge not only streaming services like Netflix, but also top TV networks.
That push is paying off. YouTube gets over a billion hours of watch time on living room TVs every day, and has been the most-watched streaming service on TVs for two years straight, according to Nielsen.
Now, Mohan reveals, living room TVs are officially the #1 place for people in the U.S. to watch YouTube content. This means that, for the first time in YouTube history, when people are watching videos, they’re more likely to be watching on a TV than on a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

When Michael Berkowitz of management company Greenlight Group signed TikToker Jordan Howlett in 2021, Howlett had 2 million followers and was working full-time flipping pizzas. He hadn’t yet developed his signature style: Now, he opens almost every video with his famous “Come here” bathroom mirror zoom, and most often goes on to share some kind of life advice or a restaurant-related secret, like a permanent discount code or a sauce recipe.
For Greenlight Group, snagging Howlett was about more than signing a single creator to its roster. Berkowitz, who launched Greenlight with childhood friend Doug Landers in 2020, believed the $250 billion content creation industry was entering a new era–one where blue-collar workers find audiences online by being both relatable and aspirational.
“You have three eras of content creation as a profession, and it’s been informed by the platforms and the mediums that were predominant at that time, and the agencies...

Alan Chikin Chow‘s videos are getting a glow-up. The mega-popular YouTube creator, whose mix of short-form and long-form uploads have brought more than 67 million subscribers to his personal channel, is opening up shop at a 10,000-square-foot production facility located in Los Angeles.
According to Taylor Lorenz of User Mag, Chow’s production hub includes 10 sets, each equipped with top-of-the-line cameras and lighting equipment. The creator and his 20-person team plan to use their new space to shoot all of Chow’s content, which he releases across channels on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

Dhar Mann already delivers the most popular ethical lessons on YouTube. Now, he’s adding a frightful twist to his moralizing. The creator’s Dhar Mann Studios YouTube channel will host Secrets of the Shadows, a Halloween-themed series that will feature some of the biggest creators on YouTube.
Secrets of the Shadows is an anthology series that will feature occult favorites like vampires, werewolves, witches, zombies, and ghosts. Those scary figures will be vehicles for the heartwarming and inspirational messages that feature in typical Dhar Mann videos. Based on the more recent of the show’s two trailers, viewers can expect plenty of haunted houses and body horror — as well as lessons about personal responsibility, kindness, empathy, and the power of friendship.
Cast members will include Alan Chikin Chow, Chelsea Sik, Anwar, Kelsi Davies, Rebecca Zamolo, Matt Slays, Royalty Fam, Francesca Capaldi, Ben Azelart, Anazala Fam, Jordan Matter and Salish Matter.

There’s a clear gap between the top four channels in this week’s ranking and the next tier in the Global Top 50.
Within that uppermost echelon, there are a pair of Indian channels that are far ahead of the pack. Both of those hubs have been regulars in the Global Top 50 since the start of the year.

Deadline’s Crew Call continues its spotlight on the revolutionaries of social media who are impacting the film and TV industry with Gen-z mom vlogger-turned-absurdist online talk show host Bobbi Althoff.
Similar to our previous social media guests — actor/comedic performer Adam Rose and teen K-drama series Alan’s Universe architect and star Alan Chikin Chow — Althoff is burning a trail for herself in the entertainment industry and leading her own burgeoning empire of brand endorsements and more at a time when the film and TV spheres are undergoing contraction and confusion about what consumers crave.
For Althoff, host and creator of The Really Good Podcast, pop culture is still the rage for many; it’s just how you harness it. Her deadpan talk show style, unprepared host styling and fearless demeanor to call guests out on their sh*t has lassoed her 13 million followers across social media, regularly topping the podcast charts,...

Kid-friendly channels are still dominating the U.S. Top 50, but among the most-watched YouTube hubs based in the United States, there’s still room for some high-achieving individual creators.
Media companies and creators alike are learning to think similarly when it comes to Shorts: No matter the nature of your content, it helps to be outlandish, it’s valuable if you can cross cultural lines, and of course, you have to post frequently.

In this week’s U.S. Top 50, there is a break of more than 100 million views between the sixth and seventh channels in the ranking.

The #1 finisher in this week’s U.S. Top 50 is someone who has been a constant presence in these charts ever since the beginning of the YouTube Shorts era. Alan Chikin Chow has made quick-hitting vertical videos his bread and butter, and that strategy has paid off handsomely.

MaviGadget held onto the #1 spot it earned a week ago. The short-form channel dominated YouTube’s vertical video hub with Shorts that depict the mechanical processes of the modern world. That type of content has universal appeal, so tool-oriented videos have become common, even among U.S.-based channels. MaviGadget is the undisputed king of that category.

There were only 12 channels in this week’s U.S. Top 50 that saw their YouTube viewership decline week-over-week, but four of those channels still wound up in the top five.
Thanks to those traffic dips, the gap between this ranking’s upper echelon and the rest of the field is thinning. The #1 channel, which is far ahead of the other contenders, didn’t seem to get that memo.

Rainbow Friends Fans earned a second straight #1 finish in the U.S. Top 50. Like a lot of the channels in this chart, the leading Shorts hub gets many of its views from young YouTube users who are into gaming.

November 2023 was a big month for U.S.-based YouTube channels. 11 of them counted more than one billion views during the 30 days of the 11th month.
Two channels took their traffic to the next level by claiming two billion monthly views. If you’re a regular reader of our charts, you might be able to guess the identity of those two American standouts.

Forbes Magazine honored transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney by including her on its “30 Under 30 Social Media” list for being one of the most influential social media users in the world.
Mulvaney was listed alongside 29 other social media personalities who have shaped the “creator economy,” a “$250 billion industry estimated to roughly double over the next five years.”
She has used her TikTok platform to document her gender transition and struggles with the backlash that resulted from Bud Light making her a spokesperson last year.
“Our callout, Dylan Mulvaney, 26, is a creator, actress and LGBTQ+ activist who gained virality with her ‘Days of Girlhood’ series that documented her gender transition,” Forbes wrote, noting that the series “drew more than one billion views.”
Others on the “30 Under 30 Social Media” list include Alix Earle, Molly Burke, Alan Chikin Chow and Steven He.

Individual creators had a strong showing in this week’s U.S. Top 50. Four of the five channels with the most views on YouTube this week are named after a person rather than a brand.
The #1 channel, however, is an outlier. It’s not named after an individual, but rather two things that toddlers love.
Chart Toppers
Toys and Colors is a self-explanatory channel. It’s a destination for bright, fun-loving videos that celebrate the power of play. It’s also, as of this week, the most-watched YouTube channel of the moment.

The five leading channels in this week’s U.S. Top 50 were the only U.S.-based hubs that collected at least 300 million YouTube views during the first full week of November.
The #1 channel in the chart more than doubled that 300-million-view benchmark. It maintained its U.S. Top 50 lead by improving on last week’s chart-topping performance.
Chart Toppers
Make it two #1 finishes in a row for Toys and Colors. The family-friendly channel appeals to its base by offering early education content that is both valuable and enjoyable for young viewers.

There wasn’t much movement at the front of the Global Top 50 this week. The channels with the highest seven-day view counts on YouTube have stayed relatively consistent since the start of October.
India is the most-represented country in the Global Top 50 with 18 entrants, but the returning chart leader hails from the other side of the world.

Toys and Colors is in front of our Global Top 50 for the second week in a row. The U.S.-based channel sustained a perfect November (so far) by adding 650.8 million weekly views.

To qualify for this week’s U.S. Top 50, YouTube channels needed to meet two benchmarks: They needed to be based in the United States, and they needed to get at least 98 million views over seven days.
Most of the channels in that group operate primarily on YouTube Shorts, but the #1 channel is a jack of all trades. It has combined multiple formats to reach its highest chart position yet.

During the fall 2022 semester, more than 250 people applied to join the University of Southern California‘s content creator incubator club, USC Reach.
Only 38 of them got in.
“We have a really exclusive, tight-knit community,” 21-year-old Dylan Huey, chairman and CEO of Reach‘s national organization and president of the USC chapter, tells Tubefilter. The club was founded at USC in 2017 and offers aspiring content creators mentorship, workshops with speakers from companies like Google, Facebook, WarnerMedia, TikTok, and Spotify, and access to collaborative content production days.
Among its alumni are Party Shirt (20.5 million followers on TikTok), Alan Chikin Chow (13.1 million followers), Mia Finney (6.5 million), and Cosette Rinab (2.3 million), and Huey himself, who says he joined the club as a freshman after deciding he wanted to find a student org that “aligned my values, what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be in the future.”

It was another exciting week in our U.S. Top 50. All of the channels in the chart collected at least 110 million weekly views over the past seven days.
