The success of TLC’s show Sister Wives has given millions of people a view into the real-life workings of a polygamist family. And on Friday afternoon, patriarch Kody Brown and his Sister Wives family brought the cameras with them as they rallied to make plural marriage legal.

Gathering on the steps of the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City, the reality stars joined hundreds of others polygamous people and supporters in protest of a bill that would keep polygamy a felony in Utah.

“I’m a father, a husband, and a lover, Not a felon,” read a sign held by Brown.

The Cmt star shared a heartfelt message to Instagram on Thursday, using the new year as an opportunity to make the big announcement about who he is and loves.

"2017. As we start a new year, there is something I want to share with you. You see, I’m gay," the 31-year-old TV host wrote. "This is not a choice I made, but something I've known about myself my whole life."

Growing up as a devout fundamentalist Mormon in a polygamous family, Mariah Brown struggled to come to terms with her sexuality. Terrified of being gay, the Sister Wives star says she became a self-proclaimed homophobe.

“It was something I was so scared of in myself,” she says in the latest issue of People. “If you were to ask me my biggest fear, it would have been to be gay.”

As a child in Utah, Brown says her church’s stance on homosexuality was always made clear to her.

Mariah Brown struggled with her sexuality for years, but when she finally told her parents she was gay, the Sister Wives stars gave her their full support.

“I remember thinking right before I told them, ‘If I don’t spit it out now, I’m not going to be able to,’ ” Mariah says in the latest issue of People. “Like when you go cliff jumping: ‘If I don’t jump now, I’m not going to jump at all.’ It was one of those things, and I just blurted it out.”
