Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence unveils a promo video, and we talked to the cast!
El ataque de los tomates asesinos (1990)
We’ve been hearing rumblings of a reboot of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise for a long time. Seventeen years, in fact. Now, after attempts by the duo behind the internet web series Ask a Ninja and filmmaker Dustin Ferguson to make a new movie fell through, a new entry in the franchise, titled Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, has finally made its way through production and is set to receive a theatrical release this Halloween, courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The new Killer Tomatoes movie unveiled a promo video over the weekend (you can watch that in the embed above) and also has a presence at San Diego Comic-Con, where JoBlo’s own Mike Conway was able to catch up with several cast members and one of the producers!

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is being referred to as a reboot simply because...

Witchcraft Xvii: The Initiation teams Dustin Ferguson with Ivy Smith
Image
Growing up, I would always notice the Witchcraft movies sitting on the shelves of my local video stores. I was intrigued by them and the fact that this horror franchise was steadily pumping out sequels, but I never rented them. It wasn’t until 2011 that I spent thirteen weeks viewing my way through the entire series, one installment a week… and that was quite an experience, as this is one crazy series. In 2016, the franchise grew by three more sequels, with parts 14, 15, and 16 being filmed back-to-back-to-back. Now, prolific filmmaker Dustin Fergsuon, who has over 150 movies to his name, has announced that he’s making the next sequel, with Witchcraft Xvii: The Initiation scheduled to start filming on July 2nd with Ivy Smith taking on the lead role of Maya Reed. Smith’s previous credits include Lust, Magic, and the Witches’ Sabbath and the Full Moon productions Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl and Giantess Battle Attack.

The Legacy Lives On: Andrew Pierson Cast As William Spanner In Witchcraft 17
Image
The longest-running horror franchise in cinema history unleashes its next chapter—and a new warlock rises.

The cult is back. The bloodline continues. And Witchcraft 17 is about to conjure a whole new nightmare.

Horror fans, brace yourselves: actor Andrew Pierson has officially been cast as the newest incarnation of William Spanner, the iconic warlock whose dark legacy has haunted screens for decades. With over 160 IMDb credits and a growing reputation in indie horror, Pierson steps into the robe as the 10th actor to take on the role—bringing a bold, blood-soaked energy to the franchise’s most enduring anti-hero.

“I grew up on this series,” says Pierson. “To become part of Witchcraft’s twisted mythology—and play William Spanner—is a full-circle moment. I’m here to honor the past… and burn the future.”

Witchcraft 17 is directed by cult horror master Dustin Ferguson, known for his raw, retro-slasher style and loyal fanbase.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence set for a Halloween theatrical release
El ataque de los tomates asesinos (1990)
We’ve been hearing rumblings of a reboot of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise for a long time. Seventeen years, in fact. That’s when it was announced that the duo behind the internet web series Ask a Ninja would be writing a remake. That didn’t pan out, but six years ago, filmmaker Dustin Ferguson said he was about to film the first attack scene for a Killer Tomatoes reboot. Then we never heard another thing about it. Now, Deadline has announced that a new entry in the franchise, titled Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, is set to receive a limited theatrical release this Halloween, courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment – and we don’t have to worry about this project falling apart, because it has already wrapped production!

Image
Stars: Lisa Ambalavanar, Sydney Craven, Stefan Kapicic, Grace Patterson, Olivia Rouyre, Kelly Lynn Reiter, Bianca Beckles-Rose, Tiff Stevenson | Written by Bradley Fowler, Cady Lanigan | Directed by Matthew Goodhue

What could possibly top the recent run of cocaine-fueled bears, sharks, and cougars? How about a cute, three-toed critter turning a sorority house into a Slotherhouse? Yes, the world’s slowest animal has turned homicidal and is carving up sorority girls like a seasoned slasher. Although, as the prologue that shows the critter getting bagged by poachers hints, this isn’t your typically chill furry tree hanger.

Emily wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become president of Sigma Lambda Theta, Slth for short. Unfortunately, she lacks the ruthlessness and social media presence of the current president Brianna. However, a chance meeting with Oliver, an exotic animal aficionado of dubious morality, changes everything. What better way to become the president...

‘Space Sharks’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Eric Roberts, Carl Crew, Scott Schwartz, Allie Perez, Brinke Stevens, Mel Novak | Written and Directed by Dustin Ferguson

One of the stranger subgenres of horror films to emerge recently is that involving sharks from outer space. Space Sharks is the latest addition, following Iron Sky and its sequel, Sky Sharks and Shark Side of the Moon, among others. Of none of them are nearly as good as the original The Outer Limits episode The Invisible Enemy, but that’s a whole different bucket of chum.

What concerns us now is the commercial spacecraft, The Clairvoyant, returning to Earth with a cargo of alien sea creatures and plant life. That includes what looks like a couple of small sharks with legs and feet. They have visions of generous research grants dancing in the heads of their scientific team. That consists of Dr. Johnson, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hansen played by...

3P0: Oh! They fly now. Finn: They fly now?  Po: They fly now.   Shark mutations in the indie horror scene are seemingly endless. Dustin Ferguson does it as good as anyone else in the micro indie horror arena and he has done it once again with Apex Predators 2: The Spawning.    Cheap, fast and done in a hurry, a movie like Apex Predators 2 exists for nothing more than a bit of fun. Wild Eye Releasing is putting it out on VOD and DVD in November, and they sent along the trailer. It is exactly what you think a horror movie...

Love never dies! Not for the doomed couple at the center of director Brian Yuzna’s gory zombie sequel, Return of the Living Dead 3, and not for dedicated horror fans.

Filmmaker Dustin Ferguson revealed on Facebook that he’s acquired the “lost” first cut of Yuzna’s film, containing 8 minutes of never before seen footage.

He writes, “Return of The Living Dead 3 fans! We have acquired the ‘lost’ 1st cut of ‘Return of The Living Dead 3’! It features almost 8 minutes of additional, never-before-seen footage not in the Unrated version! No information exists anyDwhere about this! More details soon!”

The Correct Order To Watch The Sleepaway Camp Franchise
Image
Quick show of hands: how many of you reading this knew there were five "Sleepaway Camp" movies? Put your hand down, liar in the back, I see you. Casual movie fans are likely aware of "Sleepaway Camp" due to the film's infamous ending, or tracked it down after that one "Robot Chicken" sketch where they recreated the ending with claymation as a character exclaimed, "Oh, my god! Somebody remembered this movie and wrote a comedy sketch about it!" /Film gave the original film a spot on our ranked list of the "Best Slashers of All Time," so even if fans are unaware of the latter installments, there was, of course, always going to be sequels.

"Sleepaway Camp II" and "Sleepaway Camp III" mark the leading actor debut of Pamela Springsteen and take place years after the events of "Sleepaway Camp." The fifth film released but fourth in the timeline, "Sleepaway...

Lock ‘Amityville Cop’ Up and Throw Away the Key [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

Part of the structure of this editorial series is working through the Amityville “franchise” in chronological order, so it was surprising to discover that Amityville Cop (2021) wasn’t listed on the Wikipedia list of titles.

Turns out Amityville Cop is something of an Amityville Prison (aka Against the Night) in which the word “Amityville” is never spoken and there’s no concrete connection to any of the other films. Sure, there’s a Satanic cult who dress in red, but there are none of Dustin Ferguson’s masks like Amityville in the Hood and the cult leader, Empress Ciara (Laurene Landon), has no back story that connects to any of the other villains in the “series.”

The film is set at a...

Is ‘Amityville in the Hood’ Parody or Just Kinda Racist? [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

There’s an uneasy tension in Amityville in the Hood (2021) between intentional parody and uncomfortable racism. How much of the film’s stereotypical depiction of Compton, which includes gangs, gun violence, drugs, and sex work, is making fun of the conventions of Hollywood films? Or is this just lazy screenwriting and uninspired scenarios?

Let’s give writer/director Dustin Ferguson the benefit of a doubt and go with the former. Of the three titles he’s made in the Amityville “franchise,” In the Hood is by far the most self-aware. There are even a few moments that play like genuine (read: intentional) comedy!

To be clear, there are still plenty of hiccups here. Like his other films in the “franchise,” Ferguson is...

‘Amityville Uprising’ Wraps Up an Unofficial Trilogy with an Amityville Zombie Movie [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

With Amityville Uprising, Thomas J. Churchill joins illustrious company as the only director of three Amityville films.

After kicking off his run with Amityville Harvest (2020) which focused on a film crew interviewing a vampire, Churchill’s second entry was 2001’s “werewolf in a women’s half-way house” title Amityville Moon. Now he’s back for his third film in the “series,” a self-referential zombie outing.

What makes the new film intriguing is less the details of the plot – which include a chemical explosion at a military base with unleashes red acid rain on Amityville and reanimates the dead – but how the film acts as the last part of an unofficial Amityville trilogy.

The same issues that plagued Churchill’s previous entries pop up here: too many characters,...

‘American Terror Tales 2’ Review (Amazon Prime)
Image
Stars: Luba Hansen, Daniel Johnson, Scott Gaver, Jesse L. Green, Steve Delgado, Michelle Gernon, Corey Taylor, Cortney Costanzo, Melissa Miller, Nina Rose | Written and Directed by Dustin Ferguson, Brad Twig, George James Fraser, Joe Lujan

Opening with a scene featuring a homeless guy seemingly psychically willed to upchuck his own intestines by a skull-faced silent killer, it’s safe to say American Terror Tales 2 gets off to an auspicious start. What follows is an anthology that features three unconnected stories in a film that touches upon some genre stand-bys, delivering some grisly, gory fearful fun.

The opener House of Profane (not to be confused with the long-gestating The Profane Exhibit) continues on from that opener and tells the story of a group of “teens” who decide to put each other to the test by spending the night in a house owned by someone called Skullface. Now I wouldn’t want...

‘Slotherhouse’ Review

‘Cocaine Cougar’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Dawna Lee Heising, Erik Anthony Russo, Sophiah Koikas | Written and Directed by Dustin Ferguson

Despite the name, Cocaine Cougar is not about the women down at the corner bar. It’s another microbudget attempt to cash in on Cocaine Bear, but unlike Cocaine Shark, this one actually involves cocaine. On the other hand, there is no such thing as a black cougar. But I suppose cocaine panther didn’t have the same ring to it.

After a title card tell us that this is based on true events and several minutes of the camera prowling through the woods we get several minutes of credits intercut with stock footage of a lab where animals are being experimented on. This normally wouldn’t matter that much, except Cocaine Cougar runs for fifty minutes including credits so by the time we’re told a black cougar has escaped from the lab and...

Spider Baby remake gets a trailer, aims for October premiere
Image
Director Jack Hill’s 1967 film Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (watch it Here) – which boasts a cast that includes Lon Chaney Jr. and Sid Haig – ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites. Rob Zombie clearly took some inspiration from Spider Baby when he was making House of 1000 Corpses, and back in 2007 we heard that a remake was in the works, coming from the Night of the Living Dead 3D team of director Jeff Broadstreet and writer Robert Valding. The one didn’t end up making it into production… but a couple weeks ago, it was confirmed that filming had just wrapped on a version of the remake that’s coming our way from Scs Entertainment and director Dustin Ferguson (Cocaine Cougar). Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a trailer for the Spider Baby remake, and you can check it...

Image
Director Dustin Ferguson’s remake of Jack Hill’s 1967 cult classic horror movie Spider Baby has wrapped principal photography in L.A. Says Ferguson:

We’ve reached an exhilarating milestone with the completion of the ‘Spider Baby’ remake, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have worked with an extraordinary ensemble of genre stars such as Robert Mukes, Beverly Washburn, Brinke Stevens, and Ron Chaney. Their immense talent and commitment have breathed new life into this iconic story, infusing it with a fresh and captivating energy. I can hardly wait for audiences to experience the chilling world we’ve created when ‘Spider Baby’ premieres.

The film, from production company Scs Entertainment, tells of a pair of greedy relatives that try to repossess the Merrye Estate. But the inbred children protect their home and bloodline at all costs.

‘Amityville Clownhouse’ Needs More Bozo Action [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

It was with a mix of trepidation and intrigue that I hit play on Dustin Ferguson’s Amityville Clownhouse (2020). The film, first released in 2017 under the title Amityville: Evil Never Dies, is a direct sequel to Amityville Toybox (aka Amityville Terror), the very low budget film about a father who kills his entire family after being gifted a toy monkey for his fiftieth birthday.

Toybox was emphatically not a good film, but it did feature a 10 minute coda that was a) the best part of the film, and b) teased a promising new narrative about a team of paranormal investigators.

Disappointingly this storytelling avenue goes unexplored in Clownhouse, though the sequel does feature a strong opening. First Senator Ty Pangborn (Dan Mauro...

‘The Amityville Legacy’ Finds a Haunted Monkey Inside the Amityville Toybox [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

With Amityville Vanishing Point unavailable to stream or buy in Canada, I’ve had to leap frog over it and go directly to 2016’s The Amityville Legacy (aka Amityville Toybox).

Co-written and co-directed by Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson (file away the former: he’ll return several times in the future), the 15th Amityville film is another low-budget, independent effort. All of the characters have the same first name as the actor playing them, and the performances are often amateurish. Namely the film’s visual aesthetic is flat and the audio quality is poor, particularly in early scenes set in cars. The plot recycles the events of both the original and the remake, with a father who goes mad and kills his family,...

Grandma: scream queens Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer, & more cast in shot-on-video horror movie
Image
Legendary scream queens Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Deborah Dutch (Hard to Die), and Courtney Lercara (Slaughterhouse) have joined the cast of writer/director Bobby Canipe Jr.’s upcoming horror project Grandma, a tribute to the shot-on-video horrors of the 1980s and ’90s! In Lercara’s case, this means she will be earning her first screen credit in thirty years, as she last appeared in the anthology Things back in 1993.

To ensure that Grandma will perfectly emulate the look and feel of the shot-on-video movies of the past, Canipe has brought on a dream team of executive producers and creative consultants that consists of multiple Sov filmmakers: Donald Farmer, Dustin Ferguson, Mark Polonia, Joel Wynkoop, Todd Sheets, Gary Cohen, Tim Ritter, Brad Sykes, and Eric Stanze. Scott Appleby will be providing the required original synth score.

Aiming to be “fun, thrilling, scary, and gory...
