Sebastián Schindel wrote and directed story of mother desperate to save accused son.

Netflix has picked up worldwide rights from FilmSharks to Argentinian thriller Crímenes de Familia starring double Goya winner Cecilia Roth.

Sebastián Schindel, whose previous drama The Son is a Netflix Original, wrote and directed the film about Alicia, a woman who will go to any lengths to protect her son Daniel after he is charged with the attempted murder of his ex-wife.

Roth stars as Alicia and her credits include Pedro Almodovar’s All About My Mother, Natalia Meta’s 2020 Berlinale selection and Argentinian thriller The Intruder.

Matias Lucchesi’s debut feature Natural Sciences (Ciencias naturales) scooped a top prize, the Golden Mayahuel and €14,700 ($20,000) in cash, in the Ibero-American competition of the 29th Guadalajara Film Festival (Ficg), March 21-30.

The Argentinian production follows an adolescent girl’s quest to reconnect with her estranged father and was launched last month at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Generation Kplus Grand Prix.

Sold by Urban Distribution, it beat competition from 18 other titles to take the top prize and also received the best screenplay award and the Feisal (Latin American Film Schools) trophy.

Lead stars Paula Herzog and Paola Barrientos shared the best actress prize.

Mexico City -- The coming-of-age drama Natural Sciences (Ciencias Naturales) came up big on Saturday at the 29th Guadalajara International Film Festival, winning best picture, screenplay and actress. The feature debut of writer-director Matias Lucchesi centers on a teen determined to find the father she never knew. The film's stars, Paula Hertzog and Paola Barrientos, shared honors for Guadalajara's best actress nod. Nancy Buirski [pictured], Valeria Golino and Hernán Musaluppi to decide on the Best First Feature Award; 18 films are in contention.

Berlinale has unveiled the three-person jury for its Best First Feature Award.

Us director and producer Nancy Buirski, Italian actress and director Valeria Golino and Argentinian producer Hernán Musaluppi will decide the award, with the winner announced at the official award ceremony in the Berlinale Palast on Feb 15.

The award comes with a €50,000 prize, donated by the Gwff, and will be split between the producer and director of the winning film, while the director will also be awarded with a high-quality viewfinder.

A total of 18 directorial debuts have been nominated by the heads of the Competition, Panorama, Forum, Generation and Perspektive Deutsches Kino section.
