Mortal Kombat fans are preparing for Round 2, as Mortal Kombat II is finally hitting the big screen this fall. A bloody red band trailer was just released for the movie, and it's already set an impressive record, hinting that there may be a strong turnout for the sequel in theaters.

Per Deadline, the new trailer for Mortal Kombat II reached 106.8M views worldwide within 24 hours of its launch, according to WaveMetrix data. This is the best-ever launch for a red band trailer, which is a trailer that includes R-rated content, allowing Mortal Kombat II to show off some of its bloodiest scenes. The YouTube video on the official Mortal Kombat channel has 1.6 million views, and the ratio is 77K likes with less than 4K dislikes, suggesting a very positive response to the trailer as well.

The trailer put a heavy focus on the arrival of Johnny Cage, the fan-favorite character from the video games.

Great views yield excellent box office. Despite a theatrical day and date release on HBO Max, Mortal Kombat opened to a robust $23.3M over April 23-25, 2021; that was about on par to the unadjusted 1995 opening of the first movie which did $23.2M.

The Mortal Kombat video game franchise is one of the most iconic and recognizable franchises in the world. Several attempts have been made to adapt the video games into live-action before the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat, made it to the fore. Despite some warranted criticism, the show actually performed better than its predecessors, and ignited hopes for a sequel. Mortal Kombat 2 is set to arrive in theaters in the fall, with a theatrical release date of October 24 already in place. Writer Jeremy Slater, whose credits include Moon Knight and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is confident the sequel will be a successful outing.

Mortal Kombat 2 will look to expand on the foundations set in the first film with Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and his attempt to eliminate some of Earthrealm's best fighters. The sequel will mean an expansion of the call sheet, with the introduction of several new characters and fighters.

2021's Mortal Kombat was the most successful live-action adaptation of the iconic video game in a franchise riddled with several let-downs in that department. However, the film was not spared from criticism, with the biggest being the omission of the iconic Mortal Kombat tournament. The tournament sees fighters from the Earthrealm take on those from Outworld as the destiny of both is decided in kombat. Several new fighters are coming into the fray in Mortal Kombat 2 as the tournament takes center stage and writer Jeremy Slater has addressed the coming fight fest in an interview with ComicBook.

One of the deadliest characters in the Mortal Kombat universe has just been immortalized with a new collectible. Iron Studios has officially released the first images of a new Kung Lao figure from Mortal Kombat, showing the deadly warrior standing atop a pool of skulls, the remains of anyone foolish enough to face him. The figure is based on Kung Lao’s appearance in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise instead of Max Huang’s portrayal of the character in the 2021 film, a role that he will reprise in the sequel coming to theaters later this year. The new Kung Lao figure retails for $199.99 and is now available for pre-order from IronStudios.com. It will be shipped out worldwide later this year between October and December.

This isn’t the first time this year that Iron Studios has given a new figure to a character from the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Warner Bros.'s 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat was a fun and delightfully bloody film featuring plenty of fan service while telling a cohesive story anyone unfamiliar with the games could follow. It was a massive hit on the service formally known as HBO Max, becoming the most-streamed title of that year. But despite its overall quality, the movie suffered from both a lack of scope and a lack of female characters among its large and diverse cast. Both of which director Simon McQuoid promises will be addressed in the upcoming sequel Mortal Kombat 2.

McQuoid, who made his feature directorial debut with Mortal Kombat and sits behind the helm of the sequel, told Entertainment Weekly that in addition to returning cast member Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mortal Kombat 2 will also feature Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and several other as yet-undisclosed characters.

Multiple characters killed off in the first film will be returning in Mortal Kombat 2. However, fans should know that there will be a good storyline explanation for this rather than falling back on hokey tricks.

Ed Boon, who co-created Mortal Kombat with John Tobias, teased what fans can expect from the new movie. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that lore from the video games will influence how characters like Josh Lawson's Kano and Max Huang's Kung Lao appear in Mortal Kombat 2 after having unfortunate fates in the previous film. As Boon noted, fans of the recent games are already very familiar with deceased characters returning, opening the door to make this possible.

"I can say Josh Lawson doesn't play Kano's twin," Boon said. "We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that.

New photos have been revealed for the upcoming sequel Mortal Kombat 2. Along with teasing the returns of some original film characters, they also reveal the debuts of Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), and Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).

The images were unveiled by Entertainment Weekly. Previously, Urban's Johnny Cage was revealed on movie poster artwork, though the images reveal the first official still of the character in the film. Producer Todd Garner has been sharing teasing behind-the-scenes photos from the sequel for quite a while, but we finally have some official promotional material via a poster spotlighting Karl Urban as "Johnny F*cking Cage," and a banner featuring the movie's updated logo.

The Boys and Star Trek actor doesn't appear to be in his classic video game costume as the beloved Mk character, but that's likely because this is a movie-within-a-movie poster for one of Cage's action flicks, "Uncaged Fury."

The cocky Hollywood star turned heroic freedom fighter's debut was set up at the end of the first movie when Cole Young (Lewis Tan) told his fellow kombatants that he knew someone "out in LA" that could aid them in the impending rematch against the forces of Outworld.

Mortal Kombat star Josh Lawson has teased a new version of his character in the eagerly anticipated sequel, asking fans to brace themselves for "Kano 2.0." Mortal Kombat 2, featuring new and returning characters, will hit theaters on October 24, 2025.

Lawson endeared himself to fans in the first film, playing the charismatic rogue and leader of the Black Dragon criminal organization. Kano initially begins Mortal Kombat as one of Earth's defenders before betraying his comrades at the behest of the Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung and the speedster Kabal. He meets his end when Sonya Blade stabs him in the eye with a garden gnome. The character will, however, return in the sequel, and Lawson told The Direct what audiences can expect from the character in the film. "I can say that in the second Mortal Kombat, Kano has a new chapter in his life, that [chapter] being death," the actor teased.
