Starring Ben Affleck, the thriller Hypnotic slipped into cinemas in 2023. But its heist sequence really has to be seen to be believed…
At their best, heist scenes are pure cinema: a collision of suspense, intrigue, character and satisfying pay-off. There’s the anticipation of the planning; the nail-biting tension of the act itself. Will one of the thieves make a mistake? Will a bank clerk press one of those red buttons underneath a desk? Will the whole operation end in success or bullet-strewn failure?
The heist is such an effective plot device that entire stories can be built around it. Much of the Ocean’s films are about the plotting and mathematical precision that goes into, say, breaking into a Las Vegas vault. Christopher Nolan’s Inception – essentially a mind heist – spends much of its duration exploring how Leonardo DiCaprio’s protagonist assembles a team capable of messing with Cillian Murphy’s head.

Short films generated by artificial intelligence are popping up at more and more film festivals, and the largest event yet is dedicating an entire section to AI-generated movies.
The 2024 Tribeca Festival announced Friday it will host Sora Shorts, a new program featuring five original short films all made using OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model Sora. It’s not the first time AI films have made their way to a major film festival, but it is the first time movies made with Sora have.
Sora still hasn’t been released to the public and is new even for the most seasoned AI filmmakers, but OpenAI gave the cohort of five directors early access to the program — so long as they each agreed to the filmmaking terms surrounding AI as negotiated last year with the DGA, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA guilds.

From being an unknown filmmaker hand-picked to work alongside Robert Rodriguez in 2017 to world premiering her “neo-noir Western” short Neo-Dome at South by Southwest, director Bonnie Discepolo set out to do the impossible. She accrued a small cast of big talent, featuring Pitch Perfect’s Anna Camp, Nicholas Logan (Red Right Hand), and Michael Mosley (Ozark), and helmed a dystopian road movie, complete with VFX and stunts, in only three days.

Audiences will be reminded why hitching a ride with strangers is never a great idea in Collider’s exclusive teaser for Bonnie Discepolo’s (Give Me an A) sci-fi thriller TV pilot, Neo-Dome. The project, which is only 15 minutes from start to finish, follows a young woman who catches a ride with some interesting characters on their way to a utopian dome hovering in the distance just over the horizon. Although it might clock in with a speedy runtime, judging from today’s clip, Neo-Dome will use every second to launch audiences on a high-octane thrill ride through the desert.

Exclusive: Alyssa Milano (Brazen), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Gina Torres (9-1-1: Lone Star) and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) have signed on for roles in the feature-length anthology Give Me an A, which links together 15 short films, in response to the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The film currently in post-production will have been completed within two months from the date of Roe’s overturning — which eliminated the longstanding constitutional right to abortion — in an effort to ensure this is a response and not a delayed reaction. The creators, cast and crew have made a significant effort to expedite the process in order to start a conversation with audiences about the importance of bodily autonomy and address the dysfunction of a democracy that is not protecting the needs of a majority of the population.
