Meet Aprilynne Alter, who’s helping YouTubers go pro with her Creator Crew bootcamp
Image
Aprilynne Alter set herself a deadline. One year. She was going to give herself one year to figure out her future.

As a kid, she’d wanted to be a writer, but when it came time to pick her college profession, she went with hospitality operations. During college, she started working with Vc-backed startups, and after graduation ended up in finance on Wall Street.

Her job was the start of a solid career, but she could feel it: Something wasn’t right. She needed to do something different. Something more.

So, in 2021, she quit. One year–and if things didn’t work out, she’d go back to hustling at startups.

During that one year, she tried launching her own startup, and while listening to podcasts about productivity and biz dev, she came across an episode that featured doctor-turned-YouTuber Ali Abdaal, who has 6.4 million subscribers and makes his living with...

Rebecca Zamolo’s new venture supports mothers at all stages of the fertility journey
Image
Rebecca Zamolo is using her influential position to advocate for expecting mothers. The family-oriented creator, who reaches more than 18 million subscribers on her namesake YouTube channel, has announced a new lifestyle brand called Molo.

Molo, which stands for “mother’s love,” is designed to serve as a resource for women who are embarking on the path to motherhood, no matter which stage of the process they’re at. The venture includes a platform where users will be able to share their personal stories, a space where women can research topics like reproductive biology and fertility, and information provided by fertility experts, Ob-GYNs, and nutritionists.

Beyond its community-oriented hub, the Molo brand also extends to a line of fertility wellness powders that will be available through Walmart. “Molo is all about helping women prioritize their health and feel hopeful, whether they’re starting their fertility journey or preparing for motherhood,” Zamolo told Tubefilter.

Creators want to go steady with big brands
Image
Each week, we here at Tubefilter track every sponsored video posted on YouTube. We see prolific sponsors like NordVPN and Factor, which often pay dozens of creators per week to blast info about their products to audiences of thousands of people across different niches.

But increasingly, our weekly brand report data also shows us long-term, ongoing partnerships between creators and brands. Science channel Kurzgesagt–In a Nutshell, for example, has been frequently sponsored by online education company Brilliant for over a year now. Across the digital pond, Linus Tech Tips has an ongoing deal with device case producer dbrand.

And, according to Spotter‘s recent creator-fronted upfront, this is indicative of exactly what career YouTubers are looking for: long-lasting partnerships with brands. Especially brands that are willing to put their money into more than just videos.

Chad Coleman, Chief Brand Officer at Dude Perfect, spoke about this onstage during Spotter’s event.

Spotter just took YouTube’s biggest creators to its own Upfronts
Image
Make room, YouTube. There’s a new creator-focused Upfront in town.

The content industry has gotten used to seeing YouTube at the Television Upfronts, where it uses its annual advertiser presentation, Brandcast, to tell marketers why they should buy ads against its vast trove of creator-generated content. Now Spotter has joined the fray, too, with its own event before Upfronts season officially begins. The creator services and catalog licensing company hosted its own Upfront at The Glasshouse in New York City tonight, bringing together 150 creator industry and marketing executives to hear what Spotter-partnered creators are up to.

Featured creators included some of YouTube’s top makers and execs from their companies: MrBeast, Dude Perfect, Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Rebecca Zamolo, Jordan Matter, The Try Guys, Sam & Colby, Pierson, Drew Binsky, Airrack, The Royalty Family, and Michelle Khare all took the stage to talk about upcoming projects.

As Spotter President Nic Paul put it,...

Top YouTube Creators Plan to Woo Madison Avenue by Showcasing the New Appointment TV
Image
For years, YouTube has hosted its own upfront presentation, dubbed Brandcast, where creators help the Alphabet-owned video platform woo Madison Avenue and compete with traditional media for ad dollars.

But for the first time ever on Thursday, many of the big names who have found success on the platform over the last 20 years are peeling back the curtain for marketers and advertisers on how audiences are engaging with them.

The invite-only event, dubbed Spotter Showcase, will be hosted by YouTube creators and podcasters Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry and headlined by special guests including MrBeast, Dude Perfect, Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Rebecca Zamolo and Jordan Matter. Together, Spotter’s roster of creators generated over 77 billion minutes watched in the U.S. by adults ages 18 to 49 in 2024.

“These creators are like the networks of today delivering the hit TV shows of today,” Spotter president Nic Paul told TheWrap. “This is really about one-to-one communication,...

MrBeast, Dude Perfect and Other Top YouTube Creators to Headline Their Own Upfront Presentation in Bid for TV Ad Dollars
Image
MrBeast, Dude Perfect and other top YouTube creators are teaming up with Spotter to launch their own upfront event on March 27 in an effort to lure advertising dollars away from traditional TV.

Spotter Showcase will offer an inside look at their content calendars, formats, tentpole series, audience data and upcoming ideas. Other creators appearing during the invite-only event include Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Rebecca Zamolo and Jordan Matter. Conversations will be led by Colin & Samir, who are also producing the event alongside the Spotter team.

More than 150 top chief marketing officers and marketers are expected to be in attendance for the New York event. Together, the showcase’s roster of creators had over 77 billion minuted watched in the U.S. by adults ages 18 to 49 in 2024.

YouTube Brandcast Regulars Like MrBeast And Dude Perfect Slated For Separate Creator Upfront
Image
YouTube’s annual Brandcast event for advertisers presents top creators as vehicles for commercial messages. This year, the growth of the sector has enabled MrBeast, Dude Perfect and other top-tier creators to get a spotlight for marketers independent from and in addition to YouTube’s event.

Spotter Showcase, named after creator-focused tech and licensing firm Spotter, will be held in New York City on March 27. About 150 marketing and advertising execs are expected to attend. Confirmed to participate are MrBeast, Dude Perfect, Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Rebecca Zamolo, Jordan Matter, and other creators who have often been featured in the past during Brandcast. Conversations will be led by fellow YouTubers Colin & Samir, who are also producing the event alongside Spotter.

YouTube and Spotter work closely together, so the new event isn’t a direct competitor of Brandcast – an increase in advertising on YouTube is the shared goal of both events. But...

Creators are making premium shows on their channels, so Spotter is giving them their own upfront
Image
There’s a new event putting a digital twist on the traditional upfront model. Creators like Colin & Samir, MrBeast, Rebecca Zamolo, Kinigra Deon, Dude Perfect, Ryan Trahan, and Jordan Matter will pitch their work to brands and agencies at an event put on by creator economy company Spotter.

The event, titled the Spotter Showcase, will take place in New York City on March 27. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the invite list includes CMOs from more than 150 major brands. Attendees will be treated to a typical slate of upfront presentations. Creators will tease their upcoming projects and give advertisers the chance to buy up inventory on those shows.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the NewFronts — the original digital offshoot of the upfronts — has employed a similar model across more than a decade of annual pitchfests. The NewFronts once featured dozens of high-profile presenters, who shared previews of polished, high-quality shows led by YouTube stars.

Top YouTube Creators to Hold Their Own Upfront Event in Bid for TV Ad Dollars
Image
A number of major YouTube creators will host their own upfront-style event later this month in a bid to lure marketing dollars from traditional TV to creator-driven content. MrBeast, Dude Perfect, Ryan Trahan, Kinigra Deon, Rebecca Zamolo, Jordan Matter, and Colin & Samir are confirmed to participate.

The creator-focused firm Spotter is behind the event, which is called the Spotter Showcase, and will be held in New York on March 27.

Colin & Samir will lead conversations with creators and will also produce the event alongside Spotter. More than 150 CMOs of major brands are expected to attend, alongside other creators.

Perhaps most notably, the creators will also pull back the curtain for the first time, unveiling content slates (which would allow brands to buy in early), audience data and other new information.

Or, as Spotter says, the creators, “will share their content calendars, formats, tentpole series, audience data, and upcoming ideas.”

Dhar Mann adds scares to moral lessons with star-studded Halloween series

The “moral philosopher of YouTube” has hired a Jellysmack and MTV vet as his company’s President
Image
Dhar Mann Studios has a new President. The media company founded by the self-styled “moral philosopher of YouTube” has hired Sean Atkins, a well-traveled exec who will guide Dhar Mann Studios toward new growth opportunities.

Mann, a 40-year-old California native, broke out on YouTube at the start of the decade. His idiosyncratic videos, which teach lessons by depicting morally black-and-white situations, made him a hit among millions of young viewers. Data from Gospel Stats shows that Mann’s average video viewership has declined since his 2021 peak, but he still receives nearly four million hits on each new upload.

Steady interest in the Dhar Mann brand has opened up numerous opportunities for the moralizing creator. A 2021 pact with CAA gave Mann agency representation, and he went full speed ahead with a namesake app, an in-person event, a planned feature film, and several other ambitious ventures.

With Atkins on board as President,...

Spotter’s new AI-driven “brainstorm partner” is getting creators 49% more views
Image
Artificial intelligence is a contentious topic these days–and a trendy one, with every major tech company and former crypto/Nft brand jumping on what they see as the latest moneymaking bandwagon. We’ve written before about the issues creators face with AI, including the lack of control over whether their content is scraped for use in large language models, and we’ve also written about a small handful of companies who are trying to make AI work for creators, with their consent.

Joining that handful is Spotter, which today announced Spotter Studio, an AI-based tool that’s meant to serve as “a brainstorm partner, project planner, and research copilot,” the company says. Once a creator signs up for Spotter Studio, the program looks at their entire channel, and, based on that information, can do everything from cold-suggesting new video topics to drafting thumbnails.

Spotter, which was founded in 2019, used to focus on catalog licensing,...

MrBeast’s first video for the Chinese market needed only a few hours to get three million views
Image
YouTube is not officially available in China, but that’s not stopping YouTube’s biggest star from establishing himself in the Chinese market. MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) received millions of views on his first BiliBili upload after joining the social video service on January 22.

On his BiliBili account, Donaldson will share the big-budget spectacles that regularly reel in hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. To kick things off, the man known as MrBeast introduced himself to Chinese viewers and prompted them to “subscribe for a dumpling.”

Donaldson is making a play for Chinese viewership in partnership with Eyal Baumel and Yoola. Baumel, who is known for working with creators like Rebecca Zamolo and Nastya Radzinskaya, is the former President of Yoola and an expert in content globalization. He has discussed localization at events like VidSummit, which counts MrBeast as one of its owners). He is now helping Donaldson...

VidCon has revealed the title sponsor for its 2023 Anaheim event
Image
YouTube is taking back top billing at VidCon. It will serve as the title sponsor for VidCon’s main event, which will return to the Anaheim Convention Center on June 21, 2023.

2023 will be YouTube’s eighth year as the title sponsor of VidCon’s flagship gathering. The platform previously held that distinction between 2013 and 2019. In 2022, after a three-year hiatus, VidCon returned to Anaheim with TikTok as its title sponsor. The video app was also slated as the sponsor of VidCon 2021 before that edition of the convention was canceled due to Covid-19.

Though YouTube was not the title sponsor of VidCon in 2022, it still had a strong presence at the event. At the YouTube Shorts Drive-Thru, guests picked up snacks inspired by influencers and giveaways from MrBeast‘s Feastables brand. That activation was spearheaded by the YouTube Marketing team in order to promote YouTube’s TikTok-esque format.

This year, YouTube will attempt...

Whether devouring whodunits as a kid—everything from Nancy Drew mysteries to hand-me-downs from her parents—making use of her vast collection of '90s era Spy Tech gear or figuring out how to navigate nearly a year with an ostomy bag after having her colon removed at 29, she's always seeking solutions. "I'm solving things," she explained to E! News in an exclusive chat. "I'm trying to fix things, I'm trying to learn and just try to do better the next time." Rebecca Zamolo Launches Mobile Game Inspired By Hit ‘Game Master Network’ YouTube Series (Exclusive)
Image
YouTube star Rebecca Zamolo, who has amassed roughly 15 million subscribers across her diverse portfolio of channels, is getting into the mobile game business.

On her eponymous channel, Zamolo shares challenges, while on a couple channel with her husband, Matt Slays, the two share much of the same kind of content. The duo also operates Game Master Network -- a real-life game of sorts that the couple likens to an escape room-meets-Amazing Race -- in which Zamolo and crew must solve clues and use their detective skills to defeat an antagonist known as the YouTube Hacker.

It is this latter channel that spawned Zamolo’s foray into mobile gaming. Also titled The Game Master Network, the game was not only inspired by the series but also boasts exclusive integrations. Having been in the works for months, Zamolo partnered on the venture with digital product studio BoundaryLA.

Zamolo, 35, tells Tubefilter that...

Clorox Establishes Influencer Advisory Board, Tapping Hundreds To Bolster YouTube Presence
Clorox, the P&G-owned cleaning and household products brand, is looking to deepen its ties in the influencer world with the establishment of an advisory council.

The council, which will come to comprise hundreds of influencer partners, per Digiday, will participate in branded content for the flagship Clorox brand, collaborating with the company to develop content that will resonate with digital viewers. Ensuing sponsorships will be focused on YouTube, with the aim of being “more human, more authentic and less obvious in our approach towards driving demand,” Magnus Jonsson, the company's U.S. VP of its cleaning division told, Digiday. “With millennial consumers, we’re recognizing that they fundamentally do not want to be advertised to, which means we need to develop less obvious advertising.”

Inaugural brand partners for Clorox include comedic couple vloggers Matt and Rebecca Zamolo (3.9 million subscribers), as well as family vlogging superstars The Labrant Fam.

Under the Dome Recap: Going Viral
Rebecca Zamolo
“This is a chance to find an answer. To find one damn answer.”

On Monday’s episode of Under the Dome, Joe seemed just as desperate for answers as many of us have been this season.

And although the CBS drama still has quite a bit of explaining to do, a few of the show’s puzzle pieces are making like pink stars and falling into place.

Lying Game Season 2: Charisma Carpenter's Mystery Mom Is Out for 'Revenge' — But Why?
Charisma Carpenter
Now that she’s officially a full-fledged series regular (the deal was finalized this week!), Charisma Carpenter, like the rest of us, is just trying to figure out what’s really going on with her still-mysterious Lying Game character. Is Annie Rebecca as evil as she seems? Maybe she’s just misunderstood? And is it possible that she’s not actually favoring one devious daughter over the other?

The producers haven’t yet revealed everything to Carpenter, but she’s certain of one thing: Rebecca is getting her Emily Thorne on in a major way.

Ausiello: That’s really none of your business, Carol. Just because I tweeted a private photo of myself lying in a hospital bed to more than a million people doesn’t give you the right to ask me such invasive questions. Now make yourself useful and buy me something off my get-well registry.
