2011 The Cinema Eye Honors: Gift Shop and Last Train Home Win Big
It was a wonderful night celebrating documentary filmmaking at the fourth annual Cinema Eye Honors, held in the beautifully renovated Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, N.Y. on January 18th. Hosted by filmmakers Aj Schnack (Kurt Cobain: About a Son) and Esther Robinson (A Walk Into the Sea: Danny Williams and the Warhol Factory), the nominees comprised of some of the best documentary films of 2010, truly a celebration of nonfiction filmmaking rather than a competition. David Schwartz, the chief curator of the Museum, relayed the thoughts of many filmgoers who say that “the best films at festivals are the documentaries.” The night kicked off with musical accompaniment by the Quavers and an excerpt of Utopia in Four Movements, performed by Sam Green. His excerpt was at both funny and poignant, touching upon a mix of history and comedy, segueing between 1960s ideas of the future world to...

The Poodle Trainer (2010)
IFFBoston Movie Reviews: Documentary Shorts The Poodle Trainer and Keep Dancing
The Poodle Trainer (2010)
I love Documentary Shorts programs because they're fascinating little slices of life from around the world that I'd never otherwise be privy to (plus, the films are so short that if you don't like one, all you need to do is wait 15 minutes for it to be over). Last night, I saw IFFBoston's Shorts 2: Docs package. We usually don't write about short films here at /Film, but I thought that Keep Dancing and The Poodle Trainer were so great, I just had to throw out a quick word about them. After the jump, trailers for the films and my brief thoughts. Vance Malone's The Poodle Trainer is an amazing short film about the life of Irina Markova, a Russian poodle trainer, who discusses her life as a circus worker and her relationship with her dogs. The footage of what she is able to accomplish these poodles to do...

Then, the rest of the fest is dedicated to some of the wildest films made in both the fest’s home country of Canada and from around the world, including Indonesia, Serbia, the UK and the U.S.

If you’re attending the festival, there’s one incredibly fun documentary you need to see: Michael Petersen’s Eddies: The Documentary, about the craziest beer commercial-making competition in the world — that happens to take place right in Calgary every year! Petersen profiled several...
