He has a fraternal twin brother, Alexi Hawley, who is also a television writer and producer. Alexi created The Rookie and has written for series including Castle and The Following.
Received his Bachelor's degree in political science from Sarah Lawrence College.
Had worked for the Legal Aid Society, dealing with cases involving child abuse and neglect.
