Abukar grew up in Portland, Maine, and graduated from Colby College.
He got his start in audio journalism at Maine Public Radio, where he produced a series about Muslim-Americans and moderated a gubernatorial primary debate. He's also worked as a digital producer in television news and a magazine writer. Abukar covered state and local politics at WJCT-NEWS, the NPR station in Jacksonville.
By 2022, Abukar helped to teach a course on audio storytelling at IFP Media Center and serves on the Board of Waynflete School. He lives in Brooklyn.
