Brunson received her fourth nomination for lead actress in a comedy series for her performance as Janine Teagues on the workplace sitcom — a statue she took home in 2023, when she became the second Black woman to win the award. She is also the third-most-nominated Black woman lead in a comedy series, behind The Jeffersons’ Isabel Sanford and Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross.

Abbott Elementary, for which Brunson also serves as creator and executive producer, wrapped up its fourth season by nabbing six Emmy nominations, including best comedy and best writing for a comedy series, which Brunson won for the series’ pilot episode in 2022.

But, we do all know a person who doesn’t quite fit any of the molds society has created for us. That eccentric person who seems to have lived a thousand lives before they came into ours. That, Davis says, is who he hopes Mr. Johnson evokes in between his hilarious one-liners.

But sitting with Amy Poehler on her new “Good Hang” podcast, the Emmy winner shared that her own Janine Teagues was met with criticism from Black women because she was not perfectly put together. She remembered it feeling like Janine was expected to be representative of all Black women.

“I’ll be real with you: She’s a Black character … Black audiences have so few representative characters on screen, and Black womanhood alone is so touchy,” Brunson shared. “So when a lot of women were seeing Janine not present as they wanted her to, that became tough — and I understand it.”

Abbott Elementary is submitting the Gang at the Emmys — but not all.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, who guest-starred in an Abbott-Sunny crossover in January, are among ABC comedy's guest acting submissions. Conspicuously absent are Danny DeVito and Glenn Howerton, who appeared in the episode as well. Howerton, however, only made a brief cameo (due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix's Sirens) and does not meet the 5 percent screen time rule for guest submissions.

Abbott's other guest actress entrant is Talia Shire, who plays Melissa's (Lisa Ann Walter) mom, Teresa Schemmenti. Keith David, who plays Frank, Ava's (Janelle James) estranged father, and Gregory's (Tyler James Williams) barber, is the other guest actor submission.

We all know the big ones, but this goes beyond the MCU, the Dceu, Star Wars, Star Trek and the Disney princesses: We’re now living in a world where The Big Bang Theory is about to launch its third spin-off. Even shows on AppleTV+ — a platform that, famously, no one watches, and that we just learned is losing its parent company more than $1 billion a year — are becoming franchises: as Mythic Quest spins off the anthology show Side Quest, I think we can officially say franchise fever has gone too far.

If there’s one thing Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest loves, it’s a detour. This has been true since the very first season, which paused midway through for a one-off about two characters we hadn’t met before and haven’t seen since. It’s remained so through subsequent seasons that devoted entire episodes to detailing the backstories of members from the core ensemble, or catching up with a minor character we hadn’t seen in years.

Now it extends all the way to the series’ first spinoff, Side Quest. As the cute title might suggest, this is essentially a Mythic Quest that’s nothing but those standalone chapters — that steps well outside Mq HQ to explore the other corners of the show’s universe, one quirky tale at a time. But as it turns out, a detour’s only a detour when there’s a set path to be deviating from.

Earlier this year, worlds collided when the stars of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia dropped into Willard R. Abbott Elementary School.
