With Ballerina (2025) starring Ana de Armas and from the world of John Wick having arrived in theaters Friday, many may be wondering about the films that precede this latest installment and where to watch them.

Before Ballerina, there were four John Wick films — the 2014 first film John Wick, 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). Kean Reeves portrays the titular hitman, who goes through some crazy and traumatic events across the four films.

John Wick (2014)

The first film in the franchise is available to stream on Peacock, Fubo TV, USA Network’s streaming app and NBC.com. The film stars Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov, Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov, Willem Dafoe as Marcus, John Leguizamo as Aurelio, Ian McShane as Winston and the late Lance Reddic as the hotel manager among more.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is famous for its brutal cold opening where Keanu Reeve's titular assassin makes another trip into the desert. This time, he doesn't pass out mid-way. He rides a horse and hunts down the Elder's men right into the heart of Morocco where the Elder resides, and requests to have his ring returned to him. However, instead of being greeted in a real tent by a familiar face (Said Taghmaoui), John Wick is greeted by a new Elder (George Georgiou), who's exposed in the desert. The new Elder tells Wick that he doesn't have the ring and reminds him of his inevitable fate as an assassin in the world run by the High Table.

There's very little Wick can do about this situation, but he can very well kill the Elder with a headshot. The Elder's death kicks off John Wick's bloody trail toward freedom in the fourth installment.

Celebrated action director Chad Stahelski has thrown doubt on the prospect of a fifth chapter in the John Wick saga. Discussing the possibility of a further sequel with Empire, Stahelski declares that John Wick: Chapter 4 works so well as the “closure” of the series that he’s struggling to find the “why” when it comes to making John Wick: Chapter 5.

“Now we’ve done the four, and completed the circle, so to speak, I think it’s pretty good closure for the series. And then there’s the competitor, or the real director in me who goes, ‘F--k it, let’s just see if we can do it.’ It’s very appealing. I just don’t have the ‘why’ yet. Sometimes it's because the original actor is busy with another project, doesn't want to do the sequel, or has passed away. Sometimes it's because the filmmakers want to take the character in a different direction. Sometimes a character's age prevents the original actor from reprising their role.

Famous examples of a character being recast include James Bond and Jack Ryan, who have both now gone through several different actors in various sequels and reboots. Marvel has recast several characters, including replacing Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / The Hulk between The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers. The axiom has been attributed to everyone from Confucius to James Bond, but while its origins are indeterminate, its sentiment is evergreen. Revenge is a deadly business that will likely consume the soul — if not the life — of anyone who seeks it.

John Wick (played with brooding soulfulness by Keanu Reeves) can attest to the truth of that saying, as can many of his friends and enemies. In the latest installment of his saga, "John Wick: Chapter 4," the daughter of Wick's friend Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), Akira (Rina Sawayama), observes that "everything he touches, dies." Another of Wick's on-again, off-again allies, Winston (Ian McShane) pleads with John to know where his roaring rampage of revenge will end. John himself, as ever, isn't sure of the particulars.

The delight of the John Wick franchise lies squarely in its weirdness. The film series famously kicked off with mercenary protagonist and certified wife guy John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, avenging his dog. But as John’s thirst for vengeance dwindled, the screenwriters decided to surround him with bloodthirsty weirdos rather than kill more of his loved ones. Even better, the films are aware of their own strangeness, lending a campy joy to even the dourest deeds.

The franchise is at its bizarre best in “John Wick 4,” written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and directed, as always, by former stuntman Chad Stahelski. The wild world of assassins is more esoteric, the cinematography and choreography more stunning. Though the film stretches to an audacious 169 minutes — just under three hours — if you surrender yourself to the gorgeous silliness of the Wickiverse, it goes by in a fist-flying flash.

Don't stop running! This film is one of these super tense thrillers where you hold your breath the entire time until it's over. The Tunnel is a remarkable short made by an Iranian filmmaker named Arash Ashtiani based in the UK. Presented by BFI Network and Lush. This is based on true stories. Three refugees run the race of their lives through the Euro Tunnel, trying to beat the trains and overcome their terror in a bid to reach freedom and start new lives in the UK. An interview explains that the The Tunnel "drops us into the tense third act of a larger story Ashtiani is developing with co-writer Daniel Metz." Starring Mohammad Amiri, Ramin Farahani, and George Georgiou. This was not shot on location - it is a set built inside of a studio, and many of the trains are miniatures. Which is even more incredible because it's all so believable.

Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a gritty action film titled Close, which will be premiering on Netflix in just a few weeks. Described as an "adrenaline-pumping action thriller", written and directed by Vicky Jewson, the film is about a bodyguard assigned to protect a young woman who is handed the keys to her father's business. When things go wrong and they end up kidnapped, they both must learn to fight back and escape in order to make it home alive. Noomi Rapace stars as Sam, with a cast including Sophie Nélisse, Indira Varma, Eoin Macken, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Akin Gazi, Huw Parmenter, and George Georgiou. This looks like an intense action flick, but also looks cliche with all the usual tropes. Still might be worth a watch.

Filming is continuing on the sixth season of HBO's lavish fantasy series "Game of Thrones" and a couple of new tidbits have cropped up at Watchers on the Wall from set reports which offer some Minor Spoilers.

First up it seems Yunkai slaver Razdal (George Georgio), who was seemingly burned to death by Khaleesi's dragon Drogon in the third season, may be back in some way in the new season as the slavers of Yunkai and Meereen will be joining forces.

Also coming back from the third season is Edmure Tully (Tobias Menzies) who will return for scenes set in the Riverlands alongside Brynden the Blackfish (Clive Russell). With Menzies' "Outlander" commitments though, don't expect him to play a huge part this time around.

Next up, a report out of filming in Northern Ireland confirms that Gwendoline Christie's Brienne of Tarth has been sighted shooting scenes set at Riverrun...

The 71st Venice Film Festival announced its lineup this morning, highlighted by films from American directors, including David Gordon Green, Barry Levinson, Peter Bogdanovich, Lisa Cholodenko, Andrew Niccol, and James Franco. As had been previously announced, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, starring Michael Keaton and many others, will be the opening film when the festival begins on Aug. 27.
