‘The Paper’ Cast: Why The Office Spinoff Actors Look So Familiar
Image
Hot off the press, The Office spinoff – The Paper – just released its first trailer. The mockumentary crew that documented the lives of Dunder Mifflin employees is back to film a group of volunteer reporters at a struggling newspaper outlet called Toledo Truth-Teller. Led by Domhnall Gleeson, the new editor-in-chief, his character brings energy and enthusiasm to a group of fresh underdog journalists in hopes of revitalizing the company.

For those of you who haven’t seen the trailer, here you go:

Greg Daniels, the showrunner who adapted BBC’s The Office (Ricky Gervais) for U.S. audiences, is a co-creator, along with Michael Koman (Late Night with Conan O’Brien). They have kept things hush-hush for quite some time, revealing only one still photo of Ned Sampson, the titular character played by Domhnall Gleeson. In an interview with People magazine, Gleeson says:

I don’t think my characters like Michael Scott at all.

Parker Posey to Receive First Legend Tribute at Gotham TV Awards
Parker Posey
Actress Parker Posey will be the first recipient of the Legend Tribute at the second annual Gotham Television Awards, set for 2 June at Cipriani Wall Street in New York and streamed live on Variety’s YouTube channel. Executive director Jeffrey Sharp said Posey’s “fearless originality and emotional truth” make her “a true television icon” as she moves from her early indie-film acclaim to recent work in The White Lotus season three.

The new tribute category was created to honor performers whose careers have reshaped television culture, and organisers pointed to Posey’s Emmy-nominated turn in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, her breakout film role in Dazed and Confused, and a long list of Christopher Guest collaborations to illustrate her range. Image
Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.

Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. Martin McDonagh directed Farrell to his first Golden Globe win (Best Actor for "In Bruges"), and Yorgos Lanthimos led Farrell to his second Best Actor Globe nomination, this time for "The Lobster."

He also received acclaim for "The Banshees of Inisherin" with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in "The Batman." That film role led to television with excellent reviews and big ratings for the HBO Max limited series "The Penguin."

Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Michelle Monaghan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Carrie Coon, Natasha Rothwell, Tayme Thapthimthong, Sam Nivola, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Lalisa Manobal in The White Lotus (2021)
Fresh off stealing scenes following his debauched turn in HBO’s The White Lotus, Sam Rockwell is off to New York City to fight zombies in director Zach Golden’s Hellhound. Rockwell will be joined by the great Marisa Tomei and Chris Messina in what’s being called a zombie comedy. Here’s the official synopsis via the press release:

When a zombie outbreak hits small-town New York, a washed-up veterinarian must team up with his ex-wife and her new cop boyfriend to stop President William White and his right-hand man General Graves from destroying NYC. It’s a battle of zombies, power, and unresolved feelings—and the fate of millions rests in the hands of a guy who’s already given up.

This marks the continuation of an interesting detour into genre for Rockwell, who also recently wrapped director Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, in...

The Banshees Of Inisherin Ending Explained
Image
Any filmmaker who chooses to create something new is undoubtedly thinking about the legacy they will leave behind. Even films that may not seem to have huge ambitions want to make some kind of positive mark on their audience. This is even truer for films focused on characters who themselves are thinking of the legacy they'll leave in their fictional lives.

Enter "The Banshees of Inisherin." A period piece, this pitch-black comedy-drama set in Ireland in the mid-1920s we initially reviewed at Fantastic Fest 2022 has a distinctive legacy of its own, while also telling a story about how personal legacies can spin wildly out of control. The tragicomedy is a proud member of the Nominated Only club, getting eight Oscar nominations and winning none. Yet the fact that "The Banshees of Inisherin" walked away with no golden statuettes almost burnished its aura as a tough-as-nails, surprisingly deep film with...

Atlantic Theater Company And IATSE Reach Tentative, Potentially Historic Agreement Covering Production Workforce In Nonprofit Off Broadway Venue
Image
Off Broadway’s much-honored Atlantic Theater Company and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees have reached a tentative agreement that could see the Atlantic become the first-ever not-for-profit theater company producing solely Off Broadway shows to have such a union agreement.

The tentative agreement – pending approval via ratification by the workers – covers nearly 100 production workers employed by the company. If ratified, the agreement will end a strike that began in January after months of negotiations stalled. The Atlantic’s crew voted nearly unanimously to unionize with IATSE in February 2024.

In a joint statement, the Atlantic and IATSE said the proposed agreement includes “significant compensation increases including comprehensive benefits that both parties believe reflect the essential contributions of the production crew to Atlantic Theater Company’s success.”

Full details of the agreement will be made available to the workers and organization stakeholders in the coming days, according to the statement.

Film4 is considering the commercial potential of its slate “more than we have done,” said the division’s director Ollie Madden during an on-stage interview at Film London’s Upstream IP pitching event on March 4.

“In British independent film, we’ve had an internalised snobbery about being too commercial,” said Madden, speaking in conversation with Film London CEO Adrian Wootton.

He clarified: “At Film4, [commerciality] is not the driving factor. We have a cultural remit, we’re a non-profit self-sustaining broadcaster. Unlike a commercial company like Warner Bros, that’s not the driving incentive.

‘Redux Redux’ Teaser: ‘American Vandal’ Writers’ Revenge Thriller Is ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Meets ‘Happy Death Day’
Image
Emmy-nominated directors and “American Vandal” co-writers Kevin and Matthew McManus are back at SXSW with a revenge thriller that calls to mind another filmmaking duo: The Daniels.

The McManus brothers co-wrote and co-directed “Redux Redux,” an action film that spans various multiverses. That dash of Daniels’ Best Picture-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once” could make “Redux Redux” one of the buzziest titles at SXSW 2025.

The official synopsis for “Redux Redux” reads: “In an attempt to avenge her daughter’s death, Irene Kelly travels through parallel universes, killing her daughter’s murderer over and over again. She grows addicted to the revenge streak, putting her own humanity in jeopardy.”

Michaela McManus leads the film, along with supporting turns from Stella Marcus, Jim Cummings, Taylor Misiak, Grace Van Dien, and Jeremy Holm.

“Redux Redux” is debuting at SXSW as a sales title. The McManus duo previously premiered their dark comedy feature “Funeral...

John Malkovich On Why He Rejected Marvel Movies Before ‘Fantastic Four’: “You Don’t Want To Pay Me, It’s Cool, But Then I Don’t Want To Do It”
Image
John Malkovich will be starring in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer and recently opened up about why it took him this long to act in one.

In a new interview, Malkovich revealed the real reason he had not appeared in the MCU until now was due to pay.

“The reason I didn’t do them had nothing to do with any artistic considerations whatsoever,” Malkovich told GQ. “I didn’t like the deals they made, at all.”

He continued, “These films are quite grueling to make…. If you’re going to hang from a crane in front of a green screen for six months, pay me. You don’t want to pay me, it’s cool, but then I don’t want to do it, because I’d rather be onstage, or be directing a play, or doing something else.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps was...

Every Taylor Swift Acting Role, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Two decades into her career, there isn't much Taylor Swift hasn't done. She's won album of the year at the Grammys a record-breaking four times, grossed over $2 billion with The Eras Tour, and incited economic boosts in cities, the vinyl record industry, and the NFL. The one thing Swift has yet to achieve is a major role in film or television, having only dipped her toes in acting throughout her long career.

It's not rare for musicians to transition to acting careers, as evidenced by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Madonna. However, for Swift, her massive celebrity status can be seen as distracting to some filmmakers, which is why the "Twilight" movies turned down a cameo from the then-country star. By her own admission, Swift tends to prefer to be in the director's chair, telling Martin McDonagh for Variety's Directors on Directors, "I've been part of things where you didn't know the script,...

Wild Horse Nine | Parker Posey joins mystery Martin McDonagh island project
Parker Posey
Parker Posey joins Wild Horse Nine on its Rapa Nui location shoot, due to start next month.

After sweeping up awards nominations galore for 2022’s Banshees Of Inisherin, it seems like Martin McDonagh is sticking to the island-set formula for his next film – which has just added Thelma and Beau Is Afraid star Parker Posey to its cast.

According to Variety, the film is due to start production next month in Rapa Nui, the indigenous name for Easter Island. The protected Chilean wildlife area is known for being the most remote inhabited island on Earth. We’re sure it’s got nicer weather than Inishmore, too.

Posey joins the film alongside Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich and Mark Ruffalo, ahead of her debut in season 3 of similarly island-obsessed drama, The White Lotus. Is there a buy-one-get-one-free deal on island location shoots going on?

The project marks McDonagh’s third collaboration with Rockwell,...

'Scream' and 'Avengers' Stars Join Martin McDonagh's 'The Banshees of Inisherin' Follow-Up
Image
Martin McDonagh is back with another darkly intriguing project, and this time, he’s bringing some heavy hitters along for the ride. Wild Horse Nine, the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s next film, has officially landed at Searchlight Pictures, with John Malkovich, Mark Ruffalo, and Parker Posey joining the previously announced Sam Rockwell in leading roles, as per Deadline and Variety. Cameras are set to roll in March on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, which is certainly a lot more exotic, if just as isolated, as the Irish isle setting of The Banshees of Inisherin.

‘Wild Horse Nine’: Mark Ruffalo & Parker Posey Cast Alongside Sam Rockwell In Martin McDonagh’s Mysterious Next Film
Image
British-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh made massive waves in previous awards seasons with dramatic comedies such as “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the latter earned nine nominations without a single win. The playwright-turned-filmmaker is now lining up his next feature effort, titled “Wild Horse Nine” which would see him reunite with Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell. McDonagh previously worked with the versatile actor on ‘Three Billboards’—that performance earned his Best Supporting Actor Oscar statue—and “Seven Psychopaths.”

Two other high-profile casting additions have been announced as Deadline reports: John Malkovich (“Opus,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“) and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things,” “Mickey 17“), with production set to begin next month in Rapa Nui, the indigenous name for Easter Island.

Mark Ruffalo, John Malkovich And Parker Posey Join Sam Rockwell In Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine
Image
As filmmakers go, British-Irish director and playwright Martin McDonagh is certainly one of the more well traveled among his peers. He's taken us to Belgium with In Bruges, Los Angeles for Seven Psychopaths, the American Midwest in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and a fictitious Irish Island with The Banshees Of Inisherin. For his next joint, Wild Horse Nine, the director is adding another stamp to the passport with a trip all the way out to Easter Island — and he's bringing quite the touring party with him. Per Variety's reporting, Mark Ruffalo, John Malkovich, and Parker Posey are set to join McDonagh regular Sam Rockwell for the BAFTA award winner's latest.

First floated as a potential Christopher Walken and Oscar Isaac starrer back in 2021, Wild Horse Nine — which will mark McDonagh's third collaboration with both Sam Rockwell and Three Billboards and Banshees production banner Searchlight — is being deliberately and carefully...

Bob Odenkirk: Ben Stiller Was ‘Ballsy as Hell’ to Exit ‘SNL’
Image
Bob Odenkirk is praising Ben Stiller for sticking to his guns more than 35 years ago.

Odenkirk, who was a staff member of “Saturday Night Live” alongside Stiller for just one season, told The Hollywood Reporter that it was “ballsy as hell” of Stiller to exit the famed sketch series. Stiller was a writer and featured performer at age 23 before quitting the show in 1989.

“He was ballsy as hell to walk away from ‘SNL’ and to be able to say with confidence about himself and his career, ‘This isn’t going to work for me. I have to leave here,’” Odenkirk said.

Instead, Stiller landed his own eponymous MTV (and later Fox) series “The Ben Stiller Show,” which he also directed. Odenkirk was a writer on the satirical sketch series.

“He was very serious about it, solemn,” Odenkirk said of Stiller’s directing style at the time. “He was talking about...

'Bring Them Down' Review: Brutal, Bleak & Brilliant
Image
As improbable as it may seem, one of the best films out of South by Southwest last year was about rival sheep farmers in rural Ireland. It's also one of the most nuanced and provocative films about toxic masculinity in recent memory, and equally unsettling. Written and directed by Christopher Andrews (in his feature debut), Bring Them Down stars Christopher Abbott and Barry Keoghan as the sons of sheep farmers who stand to inherit their respective father's farms on either side of a shared hill.

When their long-simmering rivalry boils over, misunderstandings give way to misguided deeds and ill-conceived notions of revenge in a film that evokes the darkest of Joel and Ethan Coen's crime thrillers. Comparisons to the films of fellow Irishman Martin McDonagh seem inevitable, but Bring Them Down is bleaker and less sentimental than McDonagh's nastiest work.

The Creator, Barbarian, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Amsterdam are all gone from Disney+
Image
Four major recent releases from Disney have disappeared from the Disney+ streaming service in the UK – one of which is now exclusive elsewhere.

I’m going to have a go at trying to work out how the ins and outs of Hollywood studios go, but still confess it baffles me a bit. Back when Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox movie studio and its assorted projects, it infamously laid out thousands of staff and culled dozens of movies that were in development. For anything to sneak through that process was a bit of a minor miracle.

Thus, when we learned that Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film The Creator – originally known as True Love – was being backed by Disney money, it was something of a surprise. Released under the 20th Century Studios label, this was a standalone, non-franchise sci-fi original, costing $80m to make, and just as much to release and market.

Christopher Walken Told Will Ferrell ‘More Cowbell’ Sketch on ‘SNL’ Had ‘Ruined My Life’
Image
April 5, 2000 was a momentous day in comedy history. That night, “Saturday Night Live” paid tribute to Blue Oyster Cult’s 1976 jam “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” and one iconic bit of percussion.

The cowbell.

The hit song, a latter-day bit of psychedelia, infamously had a repeated cowbell on the track. In the sketch, which of course anyone reading this has seen, Christopher Walken’s supposedly legendary producer “Bruce Dickerson” keeps beseeching cowbell player Gene Frenkle to play more emphatically: “I gotta a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.”

In Peacock’s “SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night” docuseries (via the New York Post), Ferrell, who wrote the “More Cowbell” sketch, opens up about how much Walken has come to resent the ubiquity of it. It all came out when Ferrell visited Walken when the actor was appearing in Martin McDonagh’s “A Behanding in Spokane” on Broadway in 2010.

“I went to see [Walken] backstage,...

Barry Keoghan Starring in Beatles Movies, Ringo Starr Says
Image
Barry Keoghan may soon be rocking a mop top, at least if Ringo Starr is to be believed.

The legendary drummer confirmed to “Entertainment Tonight” that the “Saltburn” star will play him in Sam Mendes’ sprawling look at the Beatles. “I think it’s great,” Starr said when asked for his reaction on Keoghan’s casting. “I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many,” he added.

The film, which Sony Pictures is producing, will consist of four separate movies, one from each Beatle’s point of view. For the first time since the group transformed popular music, Paul McCartney, Starr and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life story and music rights for the scripted films. That’s made casting of the Four Fab a source of endless rumors and speculation. Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn and Paul Mescal...
