UK sales outfit Mister Smith is overseeing international sales and co-representing North American rights with WME Independent on New Zealand documentary feature Stylebender, directed by Zoe McIntosh.

The pandemic has led to changes in production that could well be permanent, but its effect on content going forward is less clear. That’s one takeaway from a panel on pandemic-era production co-hosted by FilMart and the Producers Guild of America.

One major change, mentioned by several panelists, is the shift to working from home, which Bob Underwood of Writers Guild of America’s Foreign Employment Task Force described as creating more flexibility and allowing “people to work effectively minus interference.”

One downside of remote work, however, is what Underwood described as the absence personal bonding – or the “have a beer?” side — of pre-pandemic life. “We will continue to work remotely (post-pandemic), but there is also a need for in-person contact,” he said.

Feature documentary Wayne, which follows the life story of former world motorcycle champion Wayne Gardner, has begun production.

The doco is helmed by Last Cab to Darwin.s Jeremy Sims, who wrote the screen treatment alongside producer Matthew Metcalfe (Dead Lands) of the General Film Corporation.

The 24 participants of the 2016 Producers Lab Toronto have been unveiled.

The selected producers include Camilla Deakin from the UK, who is currently in post-production on the Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn-voiced animation feature Ethel And Ernest [pictured].

Kathryn Kennedy from Ireland also makes the cut, having produced 2015 drama My Name Is Emily starring Evanna Lynch and Michael Smiley.

Also participating is Germany’s Amir Hamz - who produced surreal drama Der Nachtmahr, which played at Toronto last year - and France’s Hélène Cases, who was a Producer On The Move in 2012 and has feature credits including 2014 Venice-winning The Last Hammer Blow and 2010 César-nominated Angel & Tony.

Now in its seventh year, the initiative for emerging producers is run by European Film Promotion in collaboration with Ontario Media Development Corporation and Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff).
