Swimsuit Issue, Netflix

A whole batch of Nordic titles dropped on Netflix last week, including Thelma director Joachim Trier’s debut feature Reprise and this sort of "Pool Monty" from Sweden. Since Måns Herngren's film in 2009, there have been other men's synchronised swim team films, most notably French offering Sink or Swimand British comedy Swimming With Men. All of them trade in a similar formula, with this one revolving around Frederik (Jonas Inde), who undergoing a midlife crisis and trying to reconnect with his daughter 17, finds himself attracted, along with his mates, to the idea of a swim team. Inde and Amanda Davin, as his daughter, Sara, given the film some spark and, if you're looking for something to warm your.

In recent years adoption stories have become a staple of made for cable movies. Director Ella Lemhagen’s Patrik, Age 1.5 is a departure from many of these formulaic TV movies. Besides being made for cinemas it focuses on the efforts of two married gay men in Sweden who decide to start a family. We first meet Goran (Gustaf Skarsgard) as he and his husband, Sven (Torkel Peterson), meet their new neighbors at a block party. Everything in this little neighborhood is full of bright colors similar to the suburbs of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. The residents are slightly surprised at the couple, but soon welcome them warmly. Later Goran looks longingly at the parents playing with their young children. They soon visit a adoption agency to find out how their application for a child is progressing. The men are told that no country wants to offer a child to a gay couple.

Director Mans Herngren had cinephiles grinning when they exited the theater after Thursday night's screening of The Swimsuit Issue. The film follows eight middle-aged jocks as they come together to create Sweden's first all-male synchronized swimming team. The team's leader and founder is Fredrik, played by the talented Jonas Inde. Fredrik is a divorced and unemployed journalist who is fired by his female editor. His daughter, played by the equally engaging and beautiful Amanda Davin, is a synchronized swimmer who comes to live with Fredrik when her mother moves to London for work. After Fredrik loses his venue for playing indoor hockey to a female team, he decides to use his daughter's swimming uniform for an evening of drunken bachelor party antics.

You may be familiar with the type of movie where a group of lovable losers get together to do something you wouldn't expect people like them to do, and therein lies the comedy. You had out-of-shape men stripping in The Full Monty, and old ladies posing nude in Calendar Girls, and a retired gentleman swimming the English Channel in On a Clear Day. These movies always seem to be British, but you will be pleased to know that now the Swedes have gotten in on the act!

The Swimsuit Issue is about a group of ordinary men of varying ages and physiques who combine to create Sweden's first all-male synchronized swimming team. You can see why that's very funny: They're Men, but they're doing Synchronized Swimming! There really isn't much to it beyond that.
