Chip & Joanna Gaines Facing Backlash From Evangelicals After Featuring Same-Sex Couple On Show ‘Back To The Frontier’
Image
Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines are facing backlash after they featured a same-sex couple on their newest reality survival series, Back to the Frontier.

Back to the Frontier, which premiered on July 10, follows three families as they try to live like 19th-century homesteaders.

One of the couples featured in the show is the same-sex couple, Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, who appeared on the show with their ten-year-old twin sons, Ethan and Lucas.

Hanna told People before the premiere that being part of the series was very meaningful.

“It’s important for us as a two-dad family,” he also said. “I think that puts more pressure on us as two dads to make sure that we are just like every other family.”

“And so we were extremely proud and thankful that we had that opportunity to represent what our family looks like relative to every other family,” Hanna declared. “And ultimately,...

Wrestling Legend Hulk Hogan Dead at 71
Image
Hulk Hogan, the professional wrestling legend who embodied "Hulkamania" in the 1980s and sent sports entertainment to unheard-of heights, has died. Hogan also appeared in films and TV programs over the course of his long career, and remained a mainstay in the world of professional wrestling. TMZ reports that Hogan died of heart failure this morning at his home in Clearwater, Florida. Hogan was 71.

Born Terry Gene Bollea in Augusta, Georgia, on August 11, 1953, Hogan was inspired to become a professional wrestler by "Superstar" Billy Graham. He began wrestling professionally in the late 1970s, and took on the name "Hulk Hogan" in 1979, when he was signed by Vince McMahon to wrestle for the World Wrestling Federation: Hulk, thanks to his sculpted physique, and Hogan, because McMahon wanted him to play an Irish character. Hogan was thus on the ground floor for McMahon's relentless crusade to buy up the country's scattered...

Chip Gaines Addresses Backlash Over Magnolia Network Reality Series Featuring Gay Couple: “Love One Another, It’s Not Difficult”
Image
Chip Gaines is standing on business following backlash over Magnolia Network’s Back to the Frontier, featuring a gay couple.

The Fixer Upper alum took to social media to address the criticism the reality series is receiving from some Christian viewers who are anti-same-sex couples.

“Talk, ask qustns, listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never,” Chip wrote in a post on X. “It’s a sad sunday when ‘non believers’ have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.”

Chip’s post came after the son of Evangelical pastor Billy Graham, Franklin, said it was “disappointing” that Chip and Joanna Gaines featured a gay couple on their show.

“Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin,” read Graham’s hateful words on X.

Back to the Frontier, premiered...

Chip Gaines Slams Critics of Same-Sex Couples on New Show
Image
After their new show premiered on Magnolia Network, the Fixer Upper stars had some choice words for the negative critics demonizing the show's casting. Chip Gaines took aim at those bashing the casting of a gay couple on the daring new show Back to the Frontier.

"Talk, ask questions, listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never. It’s a sad Sunday when 'non-believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian," wrote on X.

Produced by Chip and Joanna Gaines, Back to the Frontier follows three families who leave their 21st-century technology and comforts behind to spend a summer in a simulated 1880s-inspired homestead. One of the couples includes Texas dads Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, along with their twin boys, Ethan and Lucas. The Hanna-Riggs family is joined by...

Apocalypse in the Tropics Review: An Exposé of Brazil’s Politically Active Religious Right
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 NYFF coverage. Apocalypse in the Tropics is now in theaters and on Netflix.

Five years, the closest presidential election in Brazilian history, and one insurrection after her last examination of Brazil’s tumultuous socio-political sphere, Petra Costa––the brilliant documentarian behind Elena and The Edge of Democracy––hones in on Jair Bolsonaro, the radical evangelical right that won him the presidency in 2018, and the theocracy they collectively fight to instate. With Costa’s nearly unfettered access to the main characters of modern Brazilian politics, the events of Apocalypse in the Tropics practically unfold in real time––a thrilling, profound documentary horror.

Costa’s third solo feature presents Brazil as a perfectly bottled representation of what’s happening across an ever-globalizing world. It captures the trending rise of a new political right defined not by their specific beliefs but an amorphous fanatic religiosity and the spiritual,...

Apocalypse in the Tropics review – how Brazilian politics succumbed to rightwing fundamentalism
Petra Costa at an event for The IMDb Studio at Sundance (2015)
Petra Costa explains how screeching evangelical Christian leaders have become kingmakers to all politicians in a chilling documentary that shows democracy on the brink

Petra Costa’s documentary tells a grim story about modern Brazil and leaves it up to us to decide if there is a happy ending. It is about the country’s leaders’ addiction to rightwing Christian fundamentalism and US-style prayer breakfasts, a strident political mannerism linked to the fact that evangelical Christians make up an estimated 30% of the population; it is on their behalf that Brazil’s religious right, via its substantial bloc vote in Congress, has now created what amounts to a minority-rule theocracy.

This movement was originally imported after the second world war through colossal enthusiasm for the ministry of Billy Graham, and it was covertly encouraged by the US government. The evangelists and their fellow travellers show a particular enthusiasm for the Book of Revelations,...

Are Horror Movies Really a Gateway to Hell?
Image
Could watching horror movies open a genuine gateway to demonic influence? It’s a notion that might seem laughable to some, but actress Candace Cameron Bure is entirely serious.

The Full House star made headlines recently by arguing that horror films do more than just frighten audiences – they can open spiritual doorways into viewers’ homes. “If you’re watching [horror], that’s a portal that could let stuff inside,” Bure stated on a recent episode of her podcast, further explaining, “I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that’s just a portal.”

This isn’t entirely new territory. The concept of films carrying spiritual threats or curses has been around for decades. During the filming of classics like The Exorcist and Poltergeist, strange and tragic events befell cast and crew members, fueling speculation of a supernatural curse around these films.

The Christians Preaching the Case for Kamala: ‘Trump Undermines the Work of Jesus’
Image
On a recent Sunday in Canton, Georgia, a group of American Christians found themselves on a mission. It was a very specific mission, though like many missions these days, it had merch. It had live music. It had signage spread out across the front yard of a former one-room schoolhouse such that when cars meandered down the two-lane street passing through this quiet patch of Cherokee County, drivers might take notice and — should the spirit strike — feel themselves moved to pull over and hearken to see what in the heck was going on.

Apocalypse in the Tropics Review: Costa’s Illuminating Lens on Brazil’s Turbulent Times
Image
Brazilian documentarian Petra Costa takes us back into the tumult of her home country’s politics with Apocalypse in the Tropics, picking up key threads from her acclaimed previous film The Edge of Democracy. Five years have passed since that documentary offered a glimpse into Brazil’s shift towards a more conservative leadership. Now, Costa trains her perceptive lens on how matters of faith came to shape the nation’s turbulent affairs.

Specifically, she investigates the growth of evangelical Christianity over the past few decades and its connection to Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency. We learn that over just four decades, evangelicals ballooned from a small fraction to nearly a third of the population. Their ascendancy coincided with larger trends of economic hardship and ideological ferment. Meanwhile, Costa raises critical questions about how certain preachers have wielded biblical interpretations to accelerate instability and stifle social change.

A key profile is Silas Malafaia,...

The Creator of ‘H.R. Pufnstuf’ Began His Career With Topless Puppet Shows
Image
For kids growing up in the late 1960s who thought that Mister Rogers Neighborhood didn’t feel enough like a bad acid trip in a dodgy renaissance fair, there was H.R. Pufnstuf, the story of a human boy who battles a witch in a trippy fantasyland full of puppet men and talking musical instruments. Just try watching 30 seconds of this show and see how well you pass a sobriety test afterwards.

H.R. Pufnstuf was created by Sid and Marty Krofft, the brother team that also gave us the cult ‘70s kids show Land of the Lost (which was later turned into a Will Ferrell movie) and the world’s most batshit crazy amusement park — although “The World of Sid and Marty Krofft” in Atlanta closed down after only five months in operation, and eventually became the decidedly less fun CNN Center.

But before all of that, the Krofft...

What’s A Mistress Dispeller? Find Out As Doc Talk Podcast Goes Inside The Camden International Film Festival
Image
There’s only so much you can do when you catch your spouse stepping out on you – cry, get a divorce, forgive.

In China, they’ve come up with an additional option when such circumstances present themselves (an admittedly not infrequent scenario for couples all around the world). There, you can hire someone to “intervene” in the love triangle, in surreptitious fashion.

This phenomenon is explored in Mistress Dispeller, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival before heading to TIFF for its international premiere and on to the Camden International Film Festival for its U.S. premiere. At Camden, Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast caught up with director Elizabeth Lo, who shared insights about her intriguing new film and how she negotiated its inherent ethical considerations.

At Ciff, located on Maine’s bucolic central coast, we also talked with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Petra Costa, who brought Apocalypse in the Tropics to...

‘Apocalypse in the Tropics’ Review: A Riveting Account of How Evangelism Became a Major Threat to Brazilian Democracy
Image
Brazilian documentarian Petra Costa continues to chronicle the dire state of democracy in her homeland with the eye-opening exposé Apocalypse in the Tropics (Apocalipse nos Trópicos), delving into the troubling ties linking Christian evangelism and politics all the way up to the highest office.

As in her Oscar-nominated 2019 feature, The Edge of Democracy, Costa gets up close and personal with some very powerful people, capturing them during a wave of social and political unrest that has plagued Brazil over the past decade. This time, she focuses primarily on Silas Malafaia — a popular TV preacher who holds great sway over politicians on both the left and right, in a country where evangelists represent over 30% of the population.

With its portrayal of fundamentalist agitators, fake news purveyors, the very Trump-like Jair Bolsonaro, and, during an explosive finale, an attack on the country’s capital waged by hordes of insurrectionists, the similarities between...

Network review – terrific 1976 news satire is an anatomy of American discontent
Peter Finch in Network, un mundo implacable (1976)
Peter Finch won a posthumous Oscar for his uproarious performance as a swivel-eyed news anchor – a cross between Billy Graham and Donald Trump

‘The time has come to say … is ‘dehumanisation’ such a bad word?” The speaker is Howard Beale, the sweat-drenched, swivel-eyed TV news anchor in this classic 1976 satire from screenwriter Paddy Chayevsky and director Sidney Lumet, now on rerelease. Depressed by the loss of his wife and by getting fired due to dwindling audiences, Beale proclaims he will kill himself live on air and is then re-hired as a colossal popular and then populist success, his celebrity delirium turning him into a crazy prophet, telling millions of Americans to scream out of the window that they are as mad as hell and not going to take it any more. Beale is a mixture of Billy Graham, radio star Orson Welles telling America the Martians are coming, and that notorious ratings-obsessive Donald Trump.

Everyone Wants a ‘Sound of Freedom’: The Rebranding of Faith-Based Movies Has Begun
Image
Until recently, filmmaker Jon Erwin was the reigning box-office champ for faith-based films with “I Can Only Imagine” and “Jesus Revolution.” Shortly after “Sound of Freedom” opened to $14.2 million, he offered advice to Angel Studios on how it might capitalize that success.

By November, when the child-trafficking drama grossed $250 million worldwide, Erwin lost his bragging rights. He remembers joking with the producers, “It wasn’t supposed to work this much!”

Ego aside, he welcomed the success. As “Sound of Freedom” inspired box-office think pieces and conspiracy-theory controversy, Erwin and partner Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten were in talks with Amazon Studios. Today, their company The Wonder Project is producing a slate of faith-based series and films; Erwin said he’d “be lying” if he believed “Sound of Freedom” didn’t help him get a better deal.

“I had not felt that hunger from the studios in a long time to reach the audience,...

Wtf Happened to Hulk Hogan?
Image
When you hear the words “professional wrestler,” whose face comes to mind? “Well, let me tell you something, brother…” there may be no more iconic figure in the world of professional wrestling than Terrence Gene Bollea. But you may know him as Hulk Hogan.

So Wtf happened to Hulk Hogan? With a career that spans over 45 years, a lot. Let’s start at the beginning. But before we do, let’s keep in mind that the source of a lot of what follows is Bollea, himself. The complete record of Terry Bollea’s life is My Life Outside the Ring, his 2009 autobiography, which is more exhaustive than 2002’s Hollywood Hogan. In an industry stocked full of duplicitous people, Hulk Hogan’s long been considered to have perhaps the most strained relationship with the truth of any of them. But neither should we let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Between Heaven and Hell: The Crisis of Faith at the Heart of ‘The Exorcist’
Image
The Exorcist rocked the world 50 years ago and horror has never been the same since. It shocked audiences with its unflinching portrayals of disturbing medical examinations, levels of profanity that shot right past those considered “acceptable” for Hollywood studio films, and a scene in which a twelve-year-old girl masturbates with a crucifix. It was decried by some and lauded by others. Evangelist Billy Graham famously said, “the Devil is in every frame” and urged Christians not to see the film and thereby expose themselves to such evil. The Catholic Church was mixed, condemning the film’s profanity and violence, but individuals within the church also praised its depiction of the power of good over evil. Roger Ebert loved it. Pauline Kael hated it. What matters, though, is people saw it, and they saw it in droves, making it the biggest box-office smash of the year. In 1973 and 74 it famously induced fainting,...

When the horror genre is in question, it is really impossible to not mention the 1970s iconic true event-inspired film The Exorcist. Revolving around a young girl named Regan (Linda Blair) and her mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), the film sees the girl getting possessed by two mysterious entities. Fearing the behavioral shift in Regan and her deteriorating health, Chris seeks help from two priests to help her out of the mess. Indeed, with such an intriguing plot, the movie, no doubt, offered a scary ride to the audience. And it was not just the plot that had the audience biting their nails, but everything in between, from music to performances amping the horror tropes and sending chills down the spine.

Unfortunately, The Exorcist was an ambitious movie, effectively ahead of its time. The film undeniably had certain aspects that didn’t appease many in the audience. The Exorcist prompted controversies...

Bass Guitarist Andy Rourke Of The Smiths, One Of Britain’s Most Influential Bands, Dies At 59
Image
Andy Rourke, bass guitarist of The Smiths, one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s, has died after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer, his former bandmate Johnny Marr said Friday. He was 59.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, guitarist and songwriter Marr paid tribute to Rourke, who he first met when both were schoolboys in 1975.

“Throughout our teens we played in various bands around south Manchester before making our reputations with The Smiths from 1982 to 1987, and it was on those Smiths records that Andy reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player,” Marr said.

During their short time together as a four-piece band, The Smiths deliberately stayed away from the mainstream of popular music, garnering a cult following on the independent music scene.

Though much of the attention focused on the song-writing partnership of Marr and frontman Steven Patrick Morrissey, better known as Morrissey, the...

Wes Craven's Exodus From One Community Kickstarted His Love For Film
Image
When you think of horror directors, there's often the impulse to assume that all of them have nursed a burning passion for the dark and scary since they were little kids reading issues of "Creepy" or "Weird Tales" in their bedrooms. And it is true that there are some directors who got into the horror genre because they wanted to, but there are also those who wound up amongst the screams and the scares just by chance.

Wes Craven had an extremely prolific and influential career as a director. He is probably most well known for creating the iconic "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, about Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a violent murderer with a freaky glove who kills people in their dreams. And if you don't think of Freddy Krueger first, you probably think of the "Scream" franchise, of which he directed the first four entries. There's also "The Last House on the Left,...

Max von Sydow in El exorcista (1973)
Why There Will Never Be a Possession Movie as Scary as The Exorcist
Max von Sydow in El exorcista (1973)
No possession film will ever be as frightening as The Exorcist (1973) because it is a movie no one wants to make anymore. Filmmakers repeatedly try to copy it, but that’s not the same as producing a bold and groundbreaking original work, and when they do, they try to speed up the action to get to the thrills. The devil likes it slow and has never been more intimate, and real as in director William Friedkin’s multi-Oscar-nominated film. It is scary because it is studiously subdued, and daringly sloppy.

The Exorcist terrified moviegoers when it came out a day after Christmas in ‘73. William Peter Blatty’s novel was a bestseller before that, threatening to infest every bookshelf in every home in America. It was a demon just waiting for some studio to unleash it into theaters, and Warner Bros. heralded its unholy unveiling.

Word on the street warned that...

Cody Rhodes Returns to WWE at WrestleMania 38, Says He Is ‘Completely Different Individual’
Image
Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE on Saturday night at WrestleMania 38, coming back to the promotion that he famously exited nearly six years ago.

In that time, Rhodes has wrestled all over the world and was integral to the founding of All Elite Wrestling (Aew), the rival wrestling promotion run by Tony Khan. Rhodes was a top star onscreen and an executive vice president offscreen in Aew, but he left the company in February 2022 after failing to come to terms on a new contract.

In an interview with Variety in the days leading up to WrestleMania, Rhodes said his dream is still to do what his father — the legendary Dusty Rhodes — never did. He won’t say it out loud for fear of jinxing it, but Rhodes has his eyes on the WWE Championship. Dusty fought for the title in 1977 at Madison Square Garden against Superstar Billy Graham for...

What To Expect On The Second Night Of The Republican Convention: Melania Trump From The Rose Garden
Image
First Lady Melania Trump will speak to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday from a location perhaps unlike any other previous party gathering: the White House Rose Garden.

It’s anticipated that her speech will tie in with her “Be Best” initiative, but networks likely will compare her remarks to those she delivered in 2016. Back then, her speech triggered a bit of a convention sideshow when it was revealed that portions of the speech were taken from Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention address.

The first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, told MSNBC on Tuesday that every word of the first lady’s speech on Tuesday night will be from her, and that it will be uplifting and positive.

The speech also will be an unveiling of the newly renovated Rose Garden, and as things tend to go these days, that, too, has been the subject of some controversy. Critics decried the removal of 10 crabapple trees,...

Katherine Langford in Maldita (2020)
Cursed Films Producer On Troubling ‘Real’ Exorcism Footage
Katherine Langford in Maldita (2020)
Shudder’s new documentary series Cursed Films explores the odd happenings surrounding Hollywood horror flicks, and the purported supernatural reasons behind such bizarre occurrences.

However, in the premiere episode on the streaming service dedicated to horror, executive producer Jay Cheel tackles the William Friedkin-directed classic, 1973’s The Exorcist. The film—adapted from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel based on a purportedly true exorcism case—is about a young girl possessed by the demon Pazuzu. Incidents such as actress Linda Blair’s on-set injury, as well as a fire, and off-set deaths of family members all added an heir of curse to the film.

For believers in the curse, engaging in activity like playing with a Ouija board onscreen, or simply acknowledging a demon, is to invite it in. To convey the power of this faithful thinking, Cheel interviews an alleged exorcist, and even films a series of exorcisms. The...

Joe Scarborough Suggests Trump Do Something New: ‘Read the Constitution’
Joe Scarborough, Willie Geist, and Mika Brzezinski in Morning Joe (2007)
On Thursday’s “Morning Joe,” an exasperated Joe Scarborough said President Donald Trump “should do something that he’s never done before and read the Constitution of the United States.”

The MSNBC host was reviewing Trump’s attacks on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which have been consistent for weeks but continued right into Christmas Eve and Christmas Day itself, when the president questioned the authority of Pelosi and the House of Representatives in wake of the House voting to impeach him last week.

Flashback: Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson Join Wives on Holiday Tune
Johnny Cash in The Johnny Cash Show (1969)
The 1970s were, arguably, the golden age of classic TV Christmas specials. Before variety shows and specials all but disappeared from the lineups of the three major networks (and before cable TV took over and shrank network viewership), each holiday season brought forth highly rated variety specials to please nearly everyone from 1 to 92. The four Johnny Cash Christmas specials, which ran every year on CBS from 1976-1979, were certainly no exception.

Cash, who had already established a reputation for bringing together an eclectic lineup of talent each week on his ABC series,...

Jerry Falwell Jr Dismisses Christianity Today Over Anti-Trump Editorial: ‘Forgotten Magazine From Yesteryear’
Jerry Falwell Jr. appeared on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” Tuesday to add his voice to the growing clamor around a Christianity Today editorial in favor of removing President Donald Trump from office.

“I think it’s hypocritical. I think it’s ironic, also, that Christianity Today — sort of a forgotten magazine from yesteryear — took the opportunity the week before Christmas to point out the difference between true Christianity and Pharisaical or judgmental Christianity,” the Liberty University President said, adding that the publication “reminded us that there is an elite establishment among the religious community just like there is in the government, that is liberal, that’s left-wing. It’s a group that is — they think they are more moral and smarter than the rest of us.”
