Frightfest London 2025: ‘Don’t Let The Cat Out’ Review
Image
Stars: Antony Del Negro, Edy Ganem, Cerina Vincent, Jordan James Smith, Brittany Cavaco, Ashton Leigh, Tom O’Connell, Sterling Sulieman | Written by Tim Cruz, Antony Del Negro | Directed by Tim Cruz

The horror genre (and Frightfest) always tends to produce the odd, truly weird movie, and Don’t Let The Cat Out falls nicely into that category. What seems like an easy $500 for house-sitting in a nice neighbourhood soon becomes something much more difficult when he discovers a note on the fridge.

The note details a list of things to do and not to do involving the cat of the house. The list is a little bit strange; he sees no cat,...

The film — first announced by Variety earlier this month and currently shooting in North Carolina — stars David Gyasi (“The Diplomat”) in the title role. Joining Gyasi in the feature are Julia Schlaepfer (“1923”), Michael McElhatton (“Game of Thrones”) and David Straithairn (“Nomadland”), plus Joseph Lee Anderson (“Young Rock”), Jay R Ferguson (“Mad Men”), Adina Porter (“True Blood”) and Dylan Arnold (“After”).

Horton (Gyasi) wrote love poems and anti-slavery protests, and was assisted by the white wife (Schlaepfer) of a Unc Chapel Hill professor, who eventually became an anti-abolitionist. ‘The Diplomat’ Star David Gyasi to Play Enslaved Man and Celebrated Poet George Moses Horton in ‘The Bard’ From Kevin Willmott (Exclusive)
Image
David Gyasi, best known for playing the suave and well-tailored U.K. foreign secretary Austin Dennison in Netflix’s political thriller series “The Diplomat,” has landed his first lead film role.

The British actor has joined “The Bard,” telling the true story of George Moses Horton, the first Black poet to be published in America while enslaved, a feat punishable by death. Horton — to be played by Gyasi — wrote love poems and anti-slavery protests, and was assisted by the white wife of a Unc Chapel Hill professor, who eventually became an anti-abolitionist.

“The Bard” is being directed by Kevin Willmott, who won the Oscar for co-writing “BlackKklansman” with frequent collaborator Spike Lee and wrote and directed “The 24th.” The filmmaker is working from a script he wrote alongside E. Paul Edwards.

‘Khaki Fever’: Trailer Drops For Showmax’s Raunchy Game Rangers Comedy
Image
Exclusive: What happens when a group of game rangers create their own raunchy pasttime? That’s what director Brett Michael Innes sets out to reveal in Showmax comedy Khaki Fever.

Here, we’ve got the trailer for the South African feature, in which a group of game ranger staff set up a challenge to see who can hook up with the most tourists during a season while avoiding their conservative lodge manager, who makes it clear anyone fraternizing with guests will be fired. The winner is named King of Khaki and takes the losers’ tips.

Innes is the director, with Loki Rothman (Koek) composing the score and creating an original theme song titled ‘Khaki Fever’. Innes wrote the script alongside husband Nick Ahlers and the married couple also produced the film for Nostalgia Productions along with Paulo Areal. Christa Schamberger led on casting. ‘Jimmy & Stiggs’ Trailer Welcomes the First Mind-Melting Splatterfest To Come From Eli Roth’s The Horror Section [Exclusive]
Image
When Eli Roth decided to create his own production company, The Horror Section, he didn’t have the work of other filmmakers on his mind. But, all of that would change when X trilogy director, Ti West, reached out to ask him if he had seen Joe Begos’ latest project, Jimmy and Stiggs. What happened next fully shifted Roth’s perspective on just how much he could showcase with The Horror Section and led him to use the title as the production company’s kick-off. Today, Collider is thrilled to unveil the exclusive first look at the trailer for Jimmy and Stiggs, and also share an interview we conducted with Roth about The Horror Section, Jimmy and Stiggs, and his upcoming slate.

According to Roth, when West first approached him with Begos’ latest bonkers feature, the MaXXXine helmer described it as “‘insane, like old school Peter Jackson and early Sam Raimi.’” And,...

George Folsey Jr., Film Editor and Producer on John Landis Movies, Dies at 85
Image
George Folsey Jr., the film editor and producer who collaborated with director John Landis on such films as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America and An American Werewolf in London, has died. He was 85.

Folsey died Sunday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia, his son, fellow film editor Ryan Folsey (Cabin Fever, Renfield), told The Hollywood Reporter.

His father was George J. Folsey, the famed 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose credits included The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Thousands Cheer (1944), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Clock (1945), Green Dolphin Street (1947), Adam’s Rib (1949), Million Dollar Mermaid (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Forbidden Planet (1956).

George Folsey Jr. also edited Shawn Levy’s Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and The Pink Panther (2006) and Eli Roth’s Hostel (2005) and Hostel: Part II (2007).

After cutting Landis’ directorial debut, Schlock (1973), Folsey edited the Landis-helmed The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), Animal House (1978), The Blues Brothers (1980) and Coming to America (1988), which he also produced.

‘Silver Scream Con III’ Event Report – This Convention Just Keeps Getting Bigger and Better
Image
Like Spirit Halloween seizing a once-beloved store, Silver Scream Con moved into the old stomping grounds of Rock and Shock — New England’s premier horror convention, which came to an end in 2019 — at the Dcu Center in Worcester, Ma for its three-quel on September 13-15.

It was a full circle moment for Silver Scream mastermind and Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas, whose experiences attending Rock and Shock inspired him to start his own convention. Having quickly outgrown its previous venue, the Doubletree hotel in Danvers, Silver Scream Con III’s new setting was able to accommodate even more horror fans for three days of horror, music, gore, and more.

The guest list included: Scream‘s David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, and Lee Waddell; Cabin Fever‘s Eli Roth, Cerina Vincent, and Jordan Ladd; Terrifier‘s Damien Leone, David Howard Thornton, Lauren Lavera, Elliott Fullam, and Amelie McLain; Halloween‘s Nick Castle,...

Blink Twice Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Zo Kravitz's "Blink Twice" movie features a soundtrack filled with major artists and songs that set the tone for the psychological thriller. James Brown and Beyonc are prominently featured in the soundtrack, adding recognizable and fitting music to the movie's narrative. While the full "Blink Twice" soundtrack is not available for streaming, viewers can still enjoy the impactful songs individually.

Zo Kravtiz's Blink Twice movie has a great soundtrack filled with songs that fit the psychological thriller tone and island setting, and some major artists are featured on it. Given her own musical background and connections, it is no surprise that Zo Kravitz carefully selected the music that would play during her directorial debut. Some songs are used to help establish the partying and dancing that takes place on Slater King's island, while others are incorporated as subtle narrative clues or glimpses into the mindsets of various characters played...

Red Fever Review: An Engaging Look at Indigenous Influence
Image
Neil Diamond and Catherine Bainbridge have teamed up once more to share enlightening stories from their homeland. Past collaborations include Reel Injun and Rumble, works highlighting the creativity of Indigenous voices. With Red Fever, they shift focus, traveling across Turtle Island and beyond to trace threads of the past woven into today.

Joining the directors on this journey is Neil Diamond himself. A Cree photographer and filmmaker, Neil serves as our lively guide. From his hometown in northern Quebec, he ventures forth, curious about how Native culture touches lives worldwide. Though often not reflecting what people expect, Neil remains genuine in sharing both pride in his people and questions about others’ long fascination.

Across four chapters like a medicine wheel, Red Fever explores the profound yet overlooked roles of First Nations. We learn of fashion drawing on ancient designs, sports evolving from demonstrations of strength, and democracy first gleaned from nations united in diplomacy.

Borderland (2007) – Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

‘Hillbillies vs. Alien Chickens’ Takes Top Honor in Horror2Comic Contest
Image
The alien invasion comedy Hillbillies vs. Alien Chickens has taken home the top prize in this year’s Horror2Comic Contest.

The script from Nicholas Tana is described as a twist on the alien invasion genre, and centers on a vegan hillbilly who must team with a government agent to combat invading alien chickens.

Winning scripts in the Horror2Comic contest are made into comic books, and in turn are put into development as a feature or a TV show via Motor Content, the company whose credits include History’s Knightfall and the Michael Keaton feature The Founder. The contest has its origins as an offshoot of Script2Comic, which focuses on all genres, not just horror.

Scout Comics published last year’s Horror2Comic winner, She Bites, a story centering on a 134-year-old vampire trapped in the body of a 9-year-old girl.

“Our 2020 Grand Prize Winner She Bites (fka...

Roth directed the first two Hostel movies and the first Cabin Fever,...

Desperation Road trailer: Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald defend the truth in a Southern Noir thriller
Image
Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.

“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

As Ryan Gosling's Ken Song Climbs The Charts, The Barbie Score Heads To Vinyl
Image
It's time to face the music: He's not just Ken, he is Kenough. Ryan Gosling has officially entered the Billboard Hot 100 with "I'm Just Ken," debuting at number 87. The song, performed as part of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," was released on July 21 and became a viral hit, with Billboard tracking 5.2 million streams in the U.S. alone, and over 2,000 downloads during its opening week.

This is Gosling's first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, something he almost achieved with "La La Land." That album peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, while the Academy Award-winning single "City of Stars" peaked at number 2 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles, just keeping him off the charts.

"I'm Just Ken" debuts on the chart along with the "Barbie: The Album" soundtrack, which opened at number 2 on the Billboard 200. It's sitting pretty at the top of the Soundtracks chart,...

Marvel’s Secret Invasion Cast: Meet the Characters
Image
It’s been a minute since the last Marvel Cinematic Universe series hit Disney+, but as we cruise into summer 2023, we know that the streamer has three MCU shows lined up before the year’s out, including Loki season 2 and Echo. But first we have Secret Invasion, an event series that may change everything we know about some of our favorite MCU characters, set to kick off Phase 5.

In the big budget Marvel show, Nick Fury uncovers a conspiracy that a group of shapeshifting Skrulls are planning to infiltrate Earth in positions of power, and he has to get back to business and help save the day. Nick isn’t the only recognizable face in this story; Everett K. Ross, Maria Hill, Rhodey, and Talos will all make appearances here, but things may not quite be as they seem, as some major MCU characters are set to be unmasked as imposters.

The Criterion Channel’s April Lineup Includes Erotic Thrillers, David Lynch, Eric Rohmer and More
David Lynch
Good news for those who wish to know what their Twitter feed’s jacking off to: the Criterion Channel are launching an erotic thriller series that includes De Palma’s Dressed to Kill and Body Double, the Wachowskis’ Bound, and so many other movies to stir up that ceaseless, fruitless “why do movies have sex scenes?” discourse. (Better or worse than middle-age film critics implying they have a hard-on? I’m so indignant at being forced to choose.) Similarly lurid, if not a bit more frightening, is a David Lynch retro that includes the Criterion editions of Lost Highway and Inland Empire (about which I spoke to Lynch last year), a series of shorts, and a one-month-only engagement for Dune, a film that should be there in perpetuity.

Retrospectives of Harold Lloyd, Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons, and shorts by Fanta Régina Nacro round out the big debuts,...

‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Review: Paper-Thin & Only Sporadically Funny But Still A Mild Improvement
Image
Let’s start with what’s most important about “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which is that my children loved it. One is going on nine years old, so she’s mostly come out on the other side of her affection for these characters, but she had a good time; her five-year-old sister, in the midst of full-on Minion Fever (she brought a stuffed Bob along with her to the screening), proclaimed it the best one yet, though she may have been suffering from recency bias.
