He served in the United States Navy as a medic during World War II. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and earned a Master's Degree from Yale University Drama School in New Haven, Connecticut where he befriended Paul Newman.

Short, odd-looking character actor with a Shakespearean background. Tons of minor roles on stage, film and TV, and best known for his playing Johnny, the shoe shine guy who gives out every bit of exposition in Escuadrón de policía (1982) and of one of the ensemble inmates in the Jack Nicholson Oscar winner Alguien voló sobre el nido del cuco (1975).

Graduate of Green Mountain Junior College (now Green Mountain College), Illinois Wesleyan University, and Yale University. A theatre scholarship at GMC is named after him.

He studied at Green Mountain College in Vermont where he made his acting debut in Joseph Kesselring's play, "Arsenic and Old Lace.".

He died at his home in Manhattan (NYC).

Son of George Leon Duell who worked for the International Paper Company and Eliza Janet Harrington Duell who changed his name to Darwin.

He has appeared in two films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: El buscavidas (1961) and Alguien voló sobre el nido del cuco (1975), with the latter being a winner in the category.

Appeared in three films along Paula Trueman: La ultima solución de Grace Quigley (1984), Mrs. Soffel, una historia real (1984) and Aprovecha el día (1986).
