François Truffaut was the responsible for her name change from Claudine Huze to Marie Dubois after he suggested she changed it after "Marie Dubois" (1952), a novel by Jacques Audiberti they both appreciated.

In a 2005 interview, Marie said that François Truffaut was her first love and that she thinks he was in love with her too during the time they were filming Tirad sobre el pianista (1960) and although they never had an affair they remained close friends until Truffaut's death in 1984.

Her longtime husband Serge Rousseau, who started as an actor, later became an agent and founder of the Artmedia agency, which discovered actors such as Isabelle Adjani, Miou-Miou, Gérard Depardieu, Nathalie Baye and Sandrine Bonnaire.
